There were a lot of regional lockout practices in the old days, but the last two generations have done away with them entirely, excluding Nintendo. The sole exception is Persona 4 Arena on PS3, because Atlus are a bunch of *****. It's not too surprising anyway: if they're not region locking titles, they're delaying them for obscene periods of time, and when they're not delaying them they're taxing us for them. I hate Atlus. They're a JRPG equivalent to Konami.

Now, region locked online multiplayer, that's another story entirely...I still can't believe some developers are enforcing that. The whole point of online multiplayer is to play with your friends, and most people who plays games don't have a social circle confined to their country.

  • Something to note, the NA version of Fates is around 253 MB larger than its Japanese counterpart. Make what you will of that. Some more food for thought, Japanese Amie voices are around 520 MB uncompressed.
Meme jokes take up a lot of space to replace cut/changed dialogue.

NA version of Fates is larger probably because it will have dual audio like in Awakening.
Unfortunately Nintendo has confirmed there will be no dual-audio. The Jap dialogue wouldn't match up with the memes, and other changed dialogue.

More editing needed to actually make the voices hearable? :P
Just gotta really hear Felicia's "Weev gut truble!" line :P

Any meme dialogue predictions for the NA version? (Why is it that NoA are meme-lovers? NoE doesn't insert memes into their localizations, I think...)

Where is official confirmation there's no dual audio? I wonder if every single instance Azura sings is going to... yeah, it only makes sense. We've seen Rena Strober sing in several cutscenes. We're even going to get a sneak peek of a sort of fuller version of the English "Lost In Thoughts All Alone " when the Corrin Smash DLC releases in a few days. I'm warming up to Strober's singing, (it's improved a ton since the original E3 English trailer) and I think she's a great English voice for Azura in general, but at the same time the original Japanese "If~ Hitori Omou" by Renka is absolutely gorgeous...

Omfg I lost my **** when I saw this video for the first time. Felicia's "Whe've ghat trubble!" has become a meme in and of itself... x'D
It's not that I think Felicia's English voice itself is bad. (Hell, the original Japanese voice was so high-pitched it would give me a headache listening to it for a while.) It's just that the delivery isn't so good... By the tone of Felicia's voice, it doesn't really sound like there's trouble, is there? I felt like it could have had just a bit more feeling. [Shulk voice] "I'm really feeling it!"

On a random note, it would appear that the original video detailing My Castle on Nintendo's Japanese Youtube has been privatized for some reason? Does even Nintendo's home base want to forget the Skinship feature exists? I think it's safe to say such a feature probably won't exist in Fire Emblem games slated for worldwide release ever again. :p

No official confirmation, but it was pretty much confirmed through PR email:

Video was probably made private because of the drama.

  • Curiouser and curiouser... I wonder why the NA version of Fates is bigger than the JP game, if not dual audio after all? ~_~

Well, one possibility is that they just didn't cut the Japanese audio from the file or, going the other way, that they did indeed intend to have My Castle and, thus, recorded audio that was never used. Or both.

Then there's also DLC antics and accommodation for the various combos. And, of course, pre-installed updates that came after the initial release of the Japanese version, but all in all I think the uncut JP audio and unused My Castle audio are pretty likely.

  • Apparently, no dual audio as well. None of Daisuke Ono's whispering sweet nothings to the masses' ears sucks. Not being able to hear DIO's manly voice violate your every being is also a shame.

I'm cool with this change for skinship. As long as Live2D assets are intact, we're all good.

  • [English Felicia Voice] "Didn't expect that, didja?!" I think I'm starting to unironically like Felicia's English voice gods help me... x'D

This is an okay compromise, imo. The small support bonuses are still in, and I get to hear full English dialogue from every unit. We can also see the Live 2D models still, even though the lip sync is kind of awkward...
I wonder what it means when the description says "If you marry someone, new events will occur?" Probably just mushier lines or something.
    Spoiler:

I think more people are miffed about the actual no dual-audio. It recently occurred to to me that we don't get it probably because of licensing issues with Renka's song.

That's exactly what you get, lol. Really, really mushy lines that would make the both the VAs and/or players blush. There is an actual extra event though. Will put it in a spoiler, just in case.

This is a likely assumption. Getting international usage for Japanese songs can actually be a painstaking process - Namco Bandai's track record with the Tales series and other JRPG series are some notable examples - depending on the record label.

Some of the other VAs in the Japanese version also might have something in their contract that barred international usage. Most people are thinking Hayato's VA, Valshe, is the biggest offender, since she's not actually a seiyuu, lol.

  • While it's good that "skinship" is still in but without the touching, I think it would just make it "creepier" to just enter your room just for an ally to say "I love you" etc. Made me think of this:

I hope NoE brings back the touching and has dual audio for the PAL release.

  • Any Europeans/Australians who plan on buying Fire Emblem Fates when it's in your region, let's chat and compare notes on any differences in the games vs North American version. I'm always interesting in how games differ depending on the region it's being localized for.

"Skinship" in the Japanese version of Fates was a little odd, when you think about it too seriously. I remember Western fans arguing about its inclusion in a Fire Emblem game, and the current direction of the series in general last year around June right here on PC, in fact. (Back in the now dead Fire Emblem Fan Club.) Now people complain about its previously rumored removal, and what it has become now. Personally, I think talking is a more normal thing one would do. Touching could be something the player could do to the unit their avatar is married to or something, haha.

According to a translated segment of "The Making-Of Fire Emblem" book, there were divided opinions on the whole Skinship minigame until they came to what is now in the finished Japanese game. Apparently there was a version Nintendo rejected that was more "extreme." xD

That limits your options quite severely; PS4 is still building up a JRPG library. If you want something relatively cheap though, you definitely can't go wrong with Rogue Galaxy. PS2 port or not, it's aged really well, and it's well worth playing if you've not played it before.

Megadimension Neptunia VII, if it's anything like past Neptunia titles, would be well worth your time as well. The battle system has improved by leaps and bounds since the first game (which was, frankly, awful) and the appeal lies in the humour. If you like Neptunia, give Omega Quintet a try afterwards.

I'd strongly advise avoiding Final Fantasy Type-0 HD, and approach Tales of Zestiria with caution. If you've played a Tales game before and have any sort of expectations, it's going to fail to meet them. I guarantee it. As for Type-0 HD...well, it's just not very good. xD

Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth is also on PS4. I can't recommend that one enough. Classic JRPG gameplay reminiscent of Dragon Quest titles, only with Digimon. Winning formula. Bit of a slow start to the story, but it gets a little better the further you go with it.

If you don't mind losing several hours of your life, you could try Disgaea 5: Alliance of Vengeance as well. It's a very difficult series to get into - it's above and beyond other SRPGs in terms of postgame difficulty and the sheer number of different systems for you to get used to - but as far as Disgaea titles go, it's one of the easier ones. Definitely easier than 3 or 4. It's a massive timesink that'll occupy you for hours, though...and I really need to go back to it myself. xD

If you don't mind harem trash for a story, Sword Art Online: Re Hollow Fragment and Lost Song both have great gameplay, the former especially. It's a long, hard slog, but a fairly enjoyable one once you get into it.

There are a few more PS4 JRPGs coming out shortly after March that you might want to save money for, though - Nights of Azure (end of March/beginning of April) looks good, and Fairy Fencer F: Advent Dark Force will be good, because the PS3 version was great. If you're into Diablo-style games, you might enjoy The Witch and the Hundred Knight: Revival as well...although personally I didn't care for that on PS3.

Supposedly that dress up theatre(or w/e it's called) was going to have the touching mini-game where you could touch anyone anywhere(just like pokemons :P)

I heard S rank relationship has touching mini-game in the NoA release, but I'm not sure if it was confirmed or not.

Incidentally, bath towel and revealing skin-tight swimwear is in the NoA version. I don't know how face touching is creepier than that, but okay.

People actually wear towels and swimsuits, it's standard novelty and fan service, 's not creepy at all.

I don't really think it's on the same metric as the face-touching game.
