  • I love early Malick (Badlands and Days of Heaven), but haven't seen New World or Thin Red Line. Regarding Tree of Life: for me, bits of it were really, really good; other bits were horribly pretentious and indulgent. It's so much more visual than the two I've seen but I think the narration gets in the way and becomes more overwrought rather than profound. It certainly stays in your mind, though... I imagine it's a grower. Most people in my screening were a lot less kind to it than I was, with the young couple next to me laughing at it by the end. I do suggest you check it out if and when it shows near you; individual reactions will probably vary wildly!
    Forgot to respond. Crap!

Seem two films in the Bergman season so far: Wild Strawberries reminded me mostly of 'A Christmas Carol', especially the narrative but also with some of the characters. Throught a Glass Darkly was a little bit more abstract, but had some really good performances, especially from Max von Sydow. Got Smiles of a Summer Night to look forward to tomorrow, as well as the UK release of Tree of Life (obvs not Bergman, but I also can't imagine many PC-members excited for a Terrence Malick film either!)
It's FC Barcelona! I see Mourinho sucked up your brain too. Snap out of it, man!
well i can give u one. i don't need one of those but it's ok. give me a random one if u want
I know, right? Recently I've been playing the game *~again~*, and she has been a character I seem to continuously play as. She is pretty awesome....! Thank you, dear. c:
Beautiful. I've become the lazy noncommited king of the Shipping Debates thread. I became a supporter. And wow, you have to be taking like 12 college classes per term to actually have to take time off this place
Where the hell have YOU been........ >__>

It's been waaay too long. Welcome back.
I made one thread, happened to be listening to The Wall and thought why not make more. I'm thinking I'll try it more in the future.
Do you want to become a DP or something?

Persona, for me, starts to become pretentious when the film itself starts unravelling about half-way through. Up until then, I was enjoying the impressionism and the cinematography and all that stuff. After that, it all kinda forced. I can see how people eat that stuff up but, for me it lessened the film for me. On an emotional level, but not an intellectual one.

I'm really pissed that I missed a cinematic re-release of Ikiru a few months ago. That one's gonna bite me in the ass.

Also, I believe I'm your successor in C&M? (Just a hunch, but you obviously modded somewhere!)
You say appreciation... but I've only seen two Bergman features: Persona and Cries and Whispers. I admire a lot of Persona but can't bring myself to fully 'love' it in the way that Bergman-philes seem to. Cries and Whispers, on the other hand, I genuinely love. That's all kinds of amazing. There's a Bergman season on a film channel this week and I'm hoping to watch at least a few of them (Through a Glass Darkly, Winter Light, Wild Strawberries, Smiles of a Summer Night). Hopefully I'll become a convert!

Kurosawa is also a relative bind-spot for me as well. I saw Seven Samurai for the first time a few days ago and liked it a lot more than I was expecting given that it's a) an epic, which I don't tend to go for and b) over three hours long, which I also tend to avoid like the plague. Other than that, it's just Rashomon that I've seen (and enjoyed).

I can't imagine there being many Bergman fans on PC, to be honest. The closest people seem to come to appreciating foreign cinema is when a new Pokemon film comes out! :D
Would you like your karma all at once or spread out over a period of a few days for maximum effect? I'mma change the name of it once I've finished this VM.

The original intent was just videos, as I was hounded by a member who wished to upload his creations - of which he still hasn't. There's nothing stopping people from uploading sound files, and I'll change the thread to update that.

Thanks for the suggestions. Oh, and hi! :D

(Also, you're a Bergman fan, which I didn't think anyone besides me was, so you're OK in my book!)
