I think I will go on with your changes. James and Jessie seem to be stuck between Game and Anime. I will use the Team Rocket Executive sprite. But then, that makes it an obstacle - I REALLY would not like to sprite, and I am having trouble finding someone to. At first I was reluctant because of that and also since it would involve storyline changes, but I managed to fix it a bit to still go with the original storyline.

Aha yes. I am, for my third hack, working on a "fixed" Yellow Version involving changes like Karate Chop into Fighting. But in GSC some of those errors in RBY have been fixed (Sand-Attack turned to Ground).

Hm, I think of those attacks as with an intrinsic nature - to me, normal type always meant physical animalistic attacks like stomping and biting (but biting is a bit more violent, so Dark seems like a more cunning and violent version of Normal attacks). And since Dragon types are only effective against other Dragons, I thought turning those three into Dragon would be well. Unlike the James and Jessie issue, I think I'll keep these moves same. Those are the only ones that involve big changes, though. The others are Whirlwind, Sonicboom, Disable, Agility, Lick (sadly no more Ghost), Rest, and I think that's it.

WELL I GOTS HAIR ON MINE TAKE DAT

Partly because I was inspired to make the Rocket hack after playing an unfinished albeit creative-ish Crystal hack, also because my attachment to Yellow. James and Jessie seem like a natural pair as well. Maybe I will reconsider it, as the Lance one is my priority at the moment. I had thought earlier just making the main character the Rocket Executive working for Giovanni.. and I hadn't thought of James' goofballness since I was more of the game player, not the anime watcher.

Heh, I don't think I will work on new moves. But I am planning to change some Punches into fighting type (with the exception of the Mega and the Mega Kick) and I am changing some moves to types that will not affect their performance (i.e. Recover being changed from Psychic to Normal). But then I have a few actual changes, like Tri Attack and Hyper Beam being Dragon type. And I give thought behind these changes - it makes no sense Hyper Beam should be a normal attack as it is nothing physical nor anatomical. And Psychics are way too powerful, so Dragons seem the natural candidate for that move.. As well as Tri Attack, since Dragonite can do fire, water or ice, and electric style moves.

Indeed Clair seems to have the most character in all the gym leaders. I mean, when I beat her and was ready to go to the league Clair decides to just be a b!tcha5s and runs off to the den.

True. Now that I came up with the Clair idea, Gold and Silver seem disposable. I am trying to stick to the canon of the games. I could still put Gold in his house in his room, watching TV. For my other hack, I explain Red's undoing the Rocket's work by James leading the Rockets into victory then doing something bigger while Red and Blue comes along and destroy the place. James will finally get to get rid of the nuisance at the end of the hack, only to find a bigger, surprising challenge.. I have plenty of time to think though. Right now I am editing moves that I found annoyingly inconsistent (why is SonicBoom not an electric type? and why is Hyper Beam normal?).

    o yaH imRedy fo U babY~~

I usually try to stay away from FR hacks because some seem redundant to me. But Lilac seems to be the exception; I will play it. :-D

Yes, I will incorporate the elders into the mix. I'm also thinking of adding Clair as both rival and helper against the really conservative elders (this way, I make Pokemon into a meaningful satire of both the extremely progressive and the extremely traditional, adding my own little sentimentality into the game [like the way they did in RBY+GSC and RSE with the whole don't-mistreat-your-friends/Pokemon]). And also, I'll make battling Gold and Silver special events. But if I need to do that I'll have to find some way of getting the special Crystal tracks to Gold and playing it when Clair comes/battles.

I guess it won't be such a simple hack after all. :-)

I'm wondering as to why Retro Red is on the low end of your priority.

And sure. As I have told you before, I am planning to work on two hacks simultaneously. And since you have looked at my help request, you should know one of them is going to be a Gold Team Rocket hack. That one was what I meant by hideouts.

But as for the clubs, I am planning to make a Gold hack of Lance's ascension to championship (I did not mention this in my help request because there are other help requests attempting to recreate Lance's life as well), starting off at Blackthorn City's Dragons Den. I know I will change a couple of things to make it more like RBY (since we meet Lance firstly on RBY) such as removing the menu description, forcing the name to be Lance.. but if I only stick with that, it will pretty much be Gold with a few text changes, different map start, and different backsprite. Although that is a good start for a first hack, I think I should add at least something else if I am to release it in public. So I am going to add either: secret society of dragon trainers, mostly old men of course, that oppose the young Lance rising to become the 8th gym leader (and only later you find out he will go on to the Elite Four), or I might emulate ancient Greece and have each city like a seperate identity, i.e. the Gym Leaders will lead the city and everyone in the city will be, jealous to the Blackthorn dragon trainers' selection to become leaders/or their power over them, resist everytime Lance will come into the city.

But this hack will be Johto only, while I will use the Team Rocket one to recreate Gold Kanto (they removed Viridian Forest but I will add it back, etc.). So it will be kind of like Pokemon Red and Blue, the two will complete each other. There will be similairites between the two, like the secret-society or city-state ('club')-ish opposition. For the Team Rocket hack, I will make every city's Gym Leader the one who leads all the civillians and citizens to oppose Team Rocket, as well as have an active Police Force.

Woah, what a long list. That's more derpemon than I expected. :-D

Yeah, mapping does seem to be the most fun since it's the most central to hacking (I believe). If you have the mapping done, you can plan out where events happen or where trainers will be and all. I'm going to add hideouts and 'clubs' everywhere.

Could you then, please, provide a text document with the lists of Pokemon whose sprites have already been thoroughly derped?
i.e. #040 Wigglytuff: Special, #151 Mew: Retarded Head

For now, I have to rely on document-tutorials, experimenting and most of all the weekly video tutorials one of the GSC hackers releases every weekend. If only time could pass faster :-) I can't wait until I can expand maps and make things happen.

With all due respect, I cannot find the seriousness within me to answer that with a straightforward reply. Perhaps, you can glean from this picture, the expression on my face as I read your expression of anger:

You said you might have other hackers hack your Retro Red, right? I just had a brilliant idea enter into my head. What if, sometime in a happier yet distant future, I knew how to hack a bit of FR, and just replaced all the sprites with Green Derpmon? That would grant you access to your beloved Mew and your expression of anger.

As for Skeetendo, yes. I have sought help there a couple times, but most of them seem like veterans as opposed to a 'budding GSC hacker' like myself so I'm trying to find my solutions if one thing does not work. The disadvantage for me is that I have to see examples being done (I learned basic de-vamping via a Youtube video) and that because I am a slow learner, my ROM hacking progresses slower than the rate of my ideas that pop up.
    K
Sorry to break it to you, but it is one of the top candidates for "Most Horrific" in my list.. I don't think the other sprites are too bad, though. Exceptions would be Charizard, Venusaur, and Exeggutor.

I am not the type that enjoys challenges but this seems to be an exception. I'm very intrigued by just the fact that a mere Hex Editor can change much of the gameplay. I just wish there were faster and maybe easier ways to learn, as I wish I knew how to do everything from ASM to Scripting to expanding maps, adding new trainers, editing text (without the limit).. Overall I'm very eager to learn but am a slow and clumsy learner. I try to stay away from using too many tools and right now I'm using Tile Layer Pro for uncompressed graphics and Gold Finger hex editor. I got a bunch of text files outlining what I want to do but that and a few sprite changes are it.

I'm a very nostalgia-based person when it comes to Pokemon so both my ideas/storylines deal with characters already in RBY/GSC. I don't think I'll do too much with graphics and map re-arranging as I am just starting out, I feel my strength is at storylines and ideas (I've planned a lot, done tiny).

    Aye aye.
    K
I just took some time on Google to see very mean comments about the Green sprites.. It's hilarious what people say. I mean, take a look at Mew:

    ???

I am trying to make two GSC hacks, but I started hacking altogether a few weeks ago and I'm relying on some video tutorials to do so. (keyword: trying)

I'm taking it quite slow. But I am planning to make minor decisions about the hack (where the trianers will be, what Pokemon they will have, which Pokemon in which areas) when I actually work on it, similar to what you said about making up your mind when the time comes.

But I know/have done so little that I am not confident saying I am working on one.
Perhaps with more time and work.
    K
Special, aha. Cloyster and other Pokemon aren't that bad, so I guess that would work. I wonder what will the players think though. They are evolving their Ivysaur, their starting Pokemon. They don't mind the Red sprite, but as it evolves it starts blinking into something they do not recognize..

    Ivysaur evolved into Derpasaur!
    Derpp! (As opposed to Venuuuu-saur!)

Simply disabling the Johto Pokemon and replacing them with their Kanto counterparts (i.e. Hoot-Hoot with Spearow or Pidgey) would save you lots of time. But all the same you would have to get grey & de-vamped 100 more Pokemon and put them in the game. One is easier but the other is nicer.

You should get a help-request out there, or ask to make a team. That way you could get the Hoenn Pokemon. But then you would still have to figure out where to get them. And 3 regions of Pokemon in 1 region map would be overwhelming(ly unbearable).
    K
Hahaha, the Wigglytuff in Green is priceless. Maybe you could do a combo of both Red and Green, choosing the derpier sprite in each case. :-P

I think that would work, except then you'd have to come up with the places to catch 'em, since they aren't found in Kanto. I think the derpier the sprite, the better (since it means it is older and closer to home).

    Yes, the old way :-)
lol thanx will give it a try and btw how do you edit the palletes or is that the raw file?
    K
Haha, I just looked up the R/B Golbat. Looks silly beyond words.
You are inserting R/B sprites, right? A part of me thinks Green sprites will make your hack more original, but then you're at Golbat. But at the same time, it's a Red Remake. Your hack, your choice, though. :-)

More questions, actually. Are you going to include Pokemon from beyond Generation 1? And what's going on with the battle screen?
    K
I think that could work, with the only bad repurcussion being a bunch of horribly made hacks out there due to people just jumping in. I'm going to play your revamp of Red via FireRed though, as a replacement for Red.

I understand where you are coming from. I do not sprite because I know it would come out horrible. I'm glad you'll keep the sprites retro, though. The crap sprites were one of the main things about Red.
