It's sorta like me. I have that kind of imagination whereas I can just take something little and then stretch it out for miles into something big and inspirational. I enjoyed learning about poetry my last two years of English; it helped me gain many perspectives on the view of poetry and the kinds of poetry that I can create. It has also helped me create my own style of poetry.
If there's anything I can say as advice for you, it's this: The limit is only set to as far as you would want it to go. This meaning that people like to limit themselves on certain things. Like say, with tonkas or haikus. Because it has to be nature related or has to have a certain number of syllables, most tend to limit themselves because of that.
I admit, it can be a tad bit difficult. But think of it as a journal entry. Like you're writing your own journal; something that's happened to you during that day. Something that has inspired you and gave you the motive to create the poem. That would make things so much easier. And once you're done, THEN you try to make things fit within the limitations.
