I can't remember, to be honest. ^^; I think I got invited shortly after signing up for my first few games (Beginner's mafia and Game of Thrones) so I didn't really know many people either. I just kind of listened in on some conversations and only talked if I had something to offer, I guess. I don't think it felt awkward though? I'm probably not being clear, sorry DX
I feel like UG chat is kind of the same way, it's mostly the same 10-15 people (out of 50+) talking, and which ones depends on the time of day. And of course you won't know many people when you first join, but you'll know them eventually right? It's the same way with meeting people in general ^_^ (I think... I don't meet new people often :x )
If they're friends, don't feel intimated! Most people like being talked and greeted to :D Hell, I know I feel good whenever I come on and people say "Hey Ulli!" on skype or PC or steam or whatever means.
