There are always free alternatives. Eg: For 2d: Python and Pyglet C++ and SFML C# and XNA and many more. For 3d: Unity (now has free indie version) C++ and Ogre C++ and Irrlicht Python and Panda3d C# and XNA and many more.

No. No, it's not OK. I was in the cave with the ladder just before the gym leader town and tried to use that free escape rope I got. I didn't realise it had a different meaning than in the official games.

I like the idea, but in my opinion it needs a little work. Firstly, can you clarify what happens to the girl best friend (rival?). It sounds like she runs off ahead of you, but you didn't say so. Grrr, I hate it when they do that :P (not a criticism). For me the story doesn't flow smoothly...

Great idea! :) The only thing that could top this in terms of a red/blue/yellow remake is to actually re-implement the story like the anime describes it, eg: You get to win unofficial gym badges, you get to go to pokemon academy and fight trainers there, you get to challenge the 99 straight win...
