It's about this girl (who's actually a succubus) and she is a police detecive. Her and her partner Joe's job is to investigate things that aren't exactly normal, like the case that starts the book, a harpy found dead with no head and no wings in an alleyway. It is completely devoid of romantic BS since she is a succubus, and therefore unable to love anyone. Since falling in love is really counterproductive when your species kills people after sex. Anyways, they find this harpy, which is a big deal for reasons I'll tell you later, and go on this huge investigation involving magic, politics, conspiracies, and other fun stuff :). Now Ally (the main character) has a special ability that can only be found commonly in demons (no other race has ever been capable of it) which is some thing she calls "magic vision". Whenever she turns it on, she can see any trace of magic overlaying the world in a bright white-pink glow. The problem with it is that your eyes become completely pitch black when the ability is acquired. So she has to cover up it's existance by putting magic over her eyes so that they seem normal. But when she turns on the magic vision, she can't see anything because the blinding light of her "eye cover up" is all she can see. Basically whenever she needs to use the vision, she has to risk exposing her secret.
Joe is a werewolf, and though he knows about Ally's magic vision, he doesn't know that she can see the giant hulking wolf-man aura that he gives off whenever she turns it on. So, back to harpies, why are they so important? Well, way back when, Councils of grandmaster wizards were formed in each major city in the world, and they all built up magical barriers around their respective cities, Denver being the one the story takes place in. The "Walls", the term used to describe the barriers, were constructed by the grandmasters. Each council has 6 grandmasters, one the practices fire, one air, one water, and one earth, the other two are auxillary. Denver's wall was built to keep out the usual baddies, demons, imps, trolls, ogres etc. and harpies. Now, harpies are rather dumb, so the fact that they got through a wall made by people who had been practicing magic for hundreds of years is something to worry about, and the one that lets them in is a grandmaster in his own right. But he is far more powerful then the six of the Denver council....
