HEY! Sorry I laid down for a little because I had a headache tonight (damn watching the Hobbit in 3D made me have eye strain.. waahh!)
I actually went to school in Canada (I'm Canadian but moved to the UK after I graduted,) but GCSE's are qualifications you get in UK colleges or secondary school.)
I actually went to uni for 4 years and predominantly learned traditional 2D animation. With animation, the actual animation skill needs to be sharpened.. so.. acting, weight, balance, timing, spacing, etc are very important. I was taught a semester of very basic 3D animation, but I mainly practiced and learned it myself. Knowing to draw does help in 3D.. but if your animation skills are there, it's not absolutely necessary.. but for 2d it's obviously necessary.
To be an animator you need to put together a very strong animation portfolio/ demo reel. Having some 2D work may still land you a job in 3D if the reel is good and shows thorough understanding of animation principles. So that means.. even if you're good at design, it doesn't mean you'll be equally strong in animation. Animation is its own skillset.
Do you have any work online that you can show or that you've done? A good first step is getting feedback.. joining the 11 second club is a good idea if you'd like critique and want to get better. Check it out :3
