Yeah, it was totally out of character for him to become a professor. I mean, I know Oak is his grandfather and everything, but he was more of the trainer type, since it fit his personality so much more. And he's still the best of Ash's rivals in my opinion.
And yeah, the anime version of Gary was more of an actual rival, where Blue was just a jerk.

Yeah, I used to be a bigtime fan of Gary too, when the first few seasons of Pokémon were on here where I live, but then they took a jump and went straight into Hoenn in the middle of it all, so my interest for him fell. I still like his videogame counterpart though.
