  • I'mma answer you here, because the only answer you got in the thread... wasn't too helpful.

It's a simple question, yes, and while learning is a good start, there are a lot of areas to take in to consideration. Inmy opinion, the two most important areas inhacking are:

    *Mapping
    *Scripting

There are other areas that add a nice touch to a hack, but are not entirely necessary to create a good, enjoyable hack. An example of this would be Spriting.

My advice to you is to go to the Toolbox and download the following tools:

    *Advance Map
    *eXtreme Script Editor (XSE)
    *AdvanceTrainer (A- Trainer)

There are countless other tools in there, but none are entirely necessary when starting out.

Anyway, from there I suggest opening a ROM in Advance Map and tinkering around with its various features. (If you don't know where to get a ROM, unfortunately I cannot tell you here, but Google the likes of 'Pokémon Fire Red ROM Free download' and you should eventually find one). After you've played around with it check out the Tutorials section, and look for a scripting tutorial right away (I recommend 'diegoisawesome's MEGA HUGE XSE Scripting Tutorial'). I left Scripting till last, and I regret it. If it's the first thing you learn, there will be little else to hold you back in hacking.

I'd also advise no posting a thread after you've edited maps for a few days. When you want to make an actual hack, you need to put LOADS of thought into it. What I did was, I got a notebook and wrote out various aspects of the Pokémon games that I liked. I then brainstormed what would make an interesting story, and began writing it. While I did this, I ignored the fact that I couldn't script then- that way the story came out more naturally. If I'd thought of what I couldn't do, the story would limited to my abilities, which.... means it'd suck.

Hacking is by no means a cakewalk, but it is fun. It could take you ages to learn something, or it could take you a minute or two. Either way, it's worth it when you see the results.

Anyways, sorry for this little wall of text, I just figured I'd give the advice I could. I hope this answers your question in one way or another :)
