Don't make use of sphere.sourceforge.net the versions there are all way out of date. That site is a relic. spheredev.org is the place to go for all things sphere.
Sphere is written in an ugly bodged up mix of C and C++. The problem with porting it to any other platform is all it's dependencies. There are loads of them and porting them can take hours, seriously, the chance of sphere running on anything other than linux, mac and windows in the foreseeable...
That sounds like a good way to start an AI, though it may lead to some repetitive tactics, (using the most effective move repeatedly) probably optimal though.

You can write your own word wrapping function, or you could look at:
font_object.wordWrapString(string, width)
- splits a string into an array of lines as if it were wrapped using
font_object.drawTextBox().
You could then recombine those lines into one string with a "/n" inserted...
