Well, im thinking for Lugia and Lapras you're gonna want to kill a lot of Special Defense pokemon, Poliwhirl comes to mind..
For Steelix, you'd want defense, so if I were you, I'd be heading south of Blackthorn City and kill a whole load of Graveler and Geodude :)

Also another tip, visit the Smogon website, and you can find the list of good pokemon to use and good movesets for them to have.
It takes a while to really get used to online battling, heck I'm not even that experienced and don't have many wins, and that was my first Legendary battle. :P I usually play Overused battles, which you can find out about on Smogon. :)

For online battling you really gotta get them EV trained or they wont last, which that battle was really showing..
Go onto Google and search "Pokemon EV Training Guide". :) My Pokemon have some stats raised by 70 just by EV training. :)
