That's cool man, and the only thing different I do is have items activate the trainer.outfit change, so everything else should be the same.
Delete the .png and it should work
if you open the meta data is the file named without the png extension? like trchar000?
and do you have each outfit named trchar000_1, trchar000_2, etc?
It depends on what you want to do, and how you want it done.
In my game they are items in a certain bag slot, but in x/y, it is done in the back of the pokemon center.
All you really need to do to accomplish the task set in x/y is:
