  • If you think the limitations in RMXP are bad, you should try mapping with AdvanceMap. D:

Yeah, I guess. Though it's a shame because some really good hacks are being overlooked just because they don't use the patch. It's okay though, because the people who use the patch are the type of people that come, stay for a few months, and then you never see them again.

We seem to have some tentative results but Manipulation hasn't given his input yet. :\
It's not all that bad although I guess it takes a little getting used to. That's probably the same for RMXP, I suppose. Honestly, I couldn't figure out how to map/do anything with RMXP so I just gave up. :(

Most hacks don't have custom features because in order to add them, you need to 1) be able to program in ASM; and 2) have a solid understanding of how the GBA functions. People like that are hard to come by although this one guy, JPAN, released a patch which gives even the newest of newbies access to some very advanced features. It's sad because now there a bunch of "hacks" made by "hackers" that have really cool features but the people who make them don't have any idea what they're doing.

Yeah, it's seems like the best hacks are the ones that stick to the classic Nintendo feel. Though I remember Rescue Rangers (basically Mystery Dungeon but with the RPG-style battle system) as being one of the most entertaining hacks I'd ever played.
True that. Though as someone who has been reading the Map Rating Thread for the past two years, I can tell you that misused standard tiles look just as bad as poorly-made, custom tiles.

I think you're right. I don't have any experience with RMXP so I don't know how hard it is to add custom features but it's pretty hard in a ROM hack. There are, from what I've heard (again, I have no personal experience), a lot more limitations in a ROM hack than in a RMXP game. But hey, at least with a ROM hack you can play your finished product on a flash cart for the full experience. :D

There are only a few hacks that have that feel (Azure Horizons, Rijon Adventures, Genesis, and Liquid Ocean are the only ones I can think of). In Game Development, there's so much more you can do but I think that if you use that power too much, you start to drift away from the "classic feel".
Sadly, the prevailing opinion amongst newbies is that custom tiles not only look better than standard tiles but are actually necessary in any hack. I just ignore them though. :P

Honestly, RMXP seems more complicated to me. Although I guess it's just that I'm not used to it. That's probably why we both think that the other has it hard. ^^
Though I suppose "hacking" is somewhat difficult. However, that's if we're talking about actual hacking. Most people seem to think that using tools to change everything is "hacking". Using tools is easy. Real hacking is hard.
I'm very reluctant when it comes to using other people's work, though. That's the reason that all of my maps use stock, Nintendo tiles. Well, that and they look good. ^_^

If I had found a way to strike that balance, I'd have completed two hacks by now. :(
    You're not alone. :'(
Spriting is also one of the reasons I don't have my own hack. I'd need to hire someone else to make all the new Gym Leader sprites and OWs, etc.

Hehe, I guess. I do enjoy hacking, though. It's just that whenever I start a hack, I either get bored with my current project and switch to another or I look back on what I've already done and I feel like I want to change everything. It seems I'm never satisfied. :(
I think he/she looks cool. It kinda reminds me of Murkrow but with more fire (you can never have too much fire).

Yeah, that's pretty much what I do. I hack but I don't have a "hack", if that makes any sense. Well, I don't have a "hack" in the sense that most people interpret the word to mean (i.e., a full game/project). Hacking is just a hobby of mine. I like to add little features but I don't think I have the dedication or the creativity to attempt a full game. :(
Yeah, and they're pretty spiffy too. I love the tree that they used. It's in every map I've ever made that has a beach. :O
And the flowers are nice too. :)

What's that bird in your profile pic?
What do you think that house is for? :D

Hiroshi Sotomura said that he was waiting on the other judges but I guess they never got back to him. D:
It's a shame because there some really good maps last year. Though I think this year's competition was better overall.
Yup. At least, that's what he told me.

I actually never made the forest map. :(
Though it'll probably be pretty simple. I'm sure the player will be plenty worn out after that map – they don't need a whole 'nother forest to work their way through.

The grass really is greener on the other side, eh?
Yeah, I wanted to make a new map but sadly I ran out of time. Plus I really liked that map and I entered last year and I wanted to get some feedback on it at least once.
Well Manipulation is making the judges write a paragraph about each map so it's going to take a while. But it's a lot better than just posting numerical ratings, in my opinion.

Thanks! At the moment, I don't have a hack that I could use it in but if I every do make one, I'm sure I'll include it. It was supposed to be a post-Elite Four route with a legendary in the forest at the end. Oh, and trust me, it's really fun to explore in-game. ^^
I like your map too although, to be honest, I think I preferred your map from last year's Get-Together. That is, if I'm remembering it correctly. Was the map you entered last year a port town with a beach on the west side?
