I went with: Ruby: Chichic (Torchic, now Blaziken) Leaf Green: 1st run - SQUIRT (Squirtle, now Blastoise); 2nd run - Bulbasaur (traded for a Pikachu early on for a "Yellowesque" feel. Sapphire: OCEAN (Mudkip, now Swampert) Also, Water types rule. :)

I think they made a pretty good compromise in HeartGold and SoulSilver giving you the Sinnoh and Hoenn sounds in order to capture the Pokémon from those generations. However, as said now by almost everyone here, having those Pokémon randomly in the wild in those regions would be a bit odd.

It's a pretty cool feature, and some of the Bug Pokémon can only be found there (Scyther and Pinsir particularly) plus if you win it's an easy way to get a Sun Stone. However, as far as "Safari Zone" type areas go, this one is limited in the fact that it only contains Bug-types.

When I was in the Battle Hall on Platinum and going through fairly well on a 25 battle win streak and for the next trainer I picked Ghost type and the opponent had a Shedinja. And I didn't have a single attack that could hit it, so I lost to a Pokémon with 1 HP. Lame.
