Awkward silence is worse than generic questions for me. If I say something like, "So how's your [insert job, relative, or life] going?" then I feel satisfied for doing my tedious job as a family member.

I think that's the stereotype said about family holidays. I don't always get along with my family either, but thankfully they don't celebrate holidays.
