There's no need to get so competitive right from the start (even though it's a competition, heh). You can use it as an incentive to sit down and do some learning. You can even submit what you come up with for fun, and it'll be noted as such.
Although actually, most people taking part probably won't ever have looked at the battling/inventory/weapons/skills/etc. side of RPG Maker either (or will at least be really rusty on it). They'll have gone straight into Essentials, which does all those things differently. Eventing is a bit complicated at times, but you can make something reasonable quite quickly with it.
Have fun with it anyway, whatever you choose to do. ^^
