(In GIMP) (For a white background)From the menu bar, select "Layer-Tranperency-Add Alpha Channel. If it is not selectable, skip this step. Make sure the image isn't indexed. You use colour picker tool to select the background which in this case is white. Then you should select Bucket Fill tool. Below the foreground and background colours, you should see something called:
Bucket Fill
Mode : Normal
Now the "normal" is a click-and-select-option kind of thing, so open up the dropdown and you should see:

Normal
Dissolve
Behind
Color Erase
__________
blahblah

Take Colour Erase. Make sure you still have your background colour selected and fill the background with a click. You should see Black and White blocks formed which means the background is transparent.
