Yes, it's a strategy game. It divides a list of players into an uninformed majority (called the town) and in informed minority (called the mafia). Mafia know each other from the start of the game, but the town (mostly) doesn't know anyone. It's the town's job to kill all the mafia, in kills that they vote on during phases called the "day", and the mafia kill a person after the day phases, at "night". Day and night alternate. During the game, mafia have to lie and deceive the town to blend in with them. Additionally, every player has a role that allows them to do something such as: protect from nightkills, check alignment, prevent someone else's role from working, kill someone, have a vote that counts for double, etc.
I know it probably is a lot to take in at once, because it's a complex game, but it's easier to grasp by playing.
