Now I'm curious on how getting your license differs in Australia!
Since I'm over the age of eighteen, the process is a little different. All I had to do was:
-take a written test, where I had to answer ~25 questions about the rules of the road. These were all in my state's driver's manual, though I actually read a different state's manual! The rules are pretty much the same everywhere though. Once I passed this, I got my learner's permit, which allows me to actually drive a car...so long as there's a licensed driver in the passenger seat with me. The learner's permit is good for two years.
-take a eight-hour "safe driving course." This course--taken at a driving school--covers stuff like "don't drink alcohol and drive." It also went over the rules of the road again. Once this was over, the school mailed me a certificate that shows that I know not to drink alcohol and drive.
-take an on-the-road test. This is where I head down to my local Department of Motor Vehicles and have a tester sit in the car with me as I prove I know how to handle my car on the road. They go over making sure that I know where the lights/wipers/horn/brakes are, and if I can handle the car while following the rules of the road. This is the final step, and I turn in my permit to get my license. The license is then good for five years (or six??) and expires on my birthday.
