• So here's my SU. If there's something out of place or if there's anything wrong and you'd like me to change it don't hesitate to let me know and I'll get on it right away. It's been a while since I RP'd so it might be a tad on the rough side but overall I hope it's okay :)

Venice

Name:
Mariano Alberici (The Shroud)

Age: 26
Gender: Male
Species: Human

Affiliation/Job:
Mariano isn't affiliated with any of the families within Venice but he can sometimes find himself caught up in their business due to their connection with the church. Mariano himself is a servant of the church and has been for many years, as far back as he can remember in fact. His job is to seek out and eradicate the ghastly creatures that prey on the innocent and haunt Venice with their presence by using the training bestowed upon him from a very young age.

Mariano will often conduct his business at night as he's found that's when the creatures will often show their true form. Due to his nocturnal hours he can mostly be found in and around the church grounds during the day either praying, resting or repairing his equipment. On the rare occasion that Mariano is spotted in town during the day he will either be collecting information about a certain individual or running errands for those higher up than him in the church.

Appearance:

Mariano
Mask

Mariano can be described as a simple man taking pride in simple things. Being raised solely by the church made sure he never valued extravagant or fancy clothes and to take little interest in 'social gatherings'. As such the clothes he can usually be spotted in are baggy and unkempt. His long brown hair and beard following the latter.

As soon as Mariano wears his highly stylized gold trimmed mask the green in his eyes becomes much more accentuated. His hair is also now tied back in order to prevent it interfering when on a hunt. His clothes remain much the same, raggedy and misshapen albeit with weapons concealed beneath a large coat.

Personality:
To the average passerby Mariano can look to be a cold and unscrupulous sort but beneath the façade of a tough exterior is a much more caring side. He tends to try and avoid showing it as much as possible however as he believes it's a weakness that could be exploited by his foes. Being raised by the church has taught Mariano the importance of helping the poor and the sick and as such will always help these before extending a hand to individuals higher up in the chain of wealth. Mariano tends to show very little emotions especially when on a hunt, once again believing this is a weakness that an enemy could exploit to their advantage. Repressed deep within him however is a much darker side.

Mariano took a vow when he entered into this life to only kill 'creatures of the night'. He was not allowed to kill anyone else. During his first few years as a hunter he managed to get by perfectly, no human deaths, only creatures. However at times he could feel a presence, a voice whispering in his ear, urging him to break his rule and commit the ultimate crime against his church, to kill a human. He resisted these urges and the presence at first and of course dared not tell anyone in the church but as time passed by the presence grew stronger, strong enough to the point where it can manifest into a full bodied person standing right in front of Mariano. Mariano cannot speak or interact with the presence directly, only listen to what it has to say. Mariano's dark side remains locked away for the time being but only time will tell what happens.

History: Mariano had far from what one would call the traditional upbringing in Venice. Being born into a poor Venetian family left life tough for Mariano. His parents were often too sick or weak to work and as such no money for food was coming into the house. Once Mariano was old enough he started to steal food from the merchants and traders in town, taking everything he could to feed his family. This continued for a good number of years until one day unbeknownst to him he stole from a particularly alert merchant. Rather than stop the boy there and then he tailed him back to his house, waited until nightfall, crept inside and killed his parent's right in front of him. He then grabbed Mariano and thrusted him up against the wall with great force. The creatures fangs was covered from head to toe in his parent's blood. He explained that the death of his parents was his fault, that if he hadn't have stolen they'd still be alive. Rather than killing Mariano as well the creature threw the boy to the ground before storming back out into the dark night. Mariano spent that entire night crying to the high heavens while kneeling beside his lifeless parents in a pool of blood.

The next morning Mariano left his parents and began walking through the streets of Venice paying no attention to anything around him as he did. He continued walking until the sight of the church broke him from his trance. He walked inside and kneeled down near the exit. He started to pray and as he did tears fell from his eyes. Images of his parents raced through his mind and as they did his tears only grew more intense. This continued for a few minutes until an old priest noticed the boy's distress. He interrupted him and gestured that they take a walk outside. Out in the morning sun Mariano explained his situation which unsurprisingly did not phase the old man. They continued talking until the old man offered a hand of support and suggested that Mariano stay with the church until he is old enough to fend for himself. Without a second thought he agreed.

It was during these years that Mariano was trained how to fight creatures and how to identify them. He had now fully committed himself to a life of serving the church. However no matter how hard he trained he could not stop himself from believing that his parent's death that night was indeed his fault. This thought troubled him greatly as still does to this day. It was soon after this that he started hearing the whispers. He shrugged it off at first but as time progressed he had to accept the fact that something or someone was whispering dark and evil deeds to him. He always manages to reject the demands of the voice but he is unsure how much longer he can resist. As time passed the mysterious voice had now manifested itself into a full bodied person still whispering the horrific deeds as before. The strange figure wears dark baggy clothes much like his own but wears a large hooded robe to cover its face. Mariano has tried many times to get a look at the creatures face but every time he gets close the figure disappears. This figure cannot be seen or heard by anyone other than Mariano.

Many years have passed and Mariano still hunts creatures for the church like before. He may not lead a traditional lifestyle but he sees it as a fulfilling one none the less.

Powers/Skills:

-Enhanced Hearing: Mariano is able to enhance his hearing to a level much higher than a normal humans. This allows him to pinpoint certain individuals or creatures through walls for example. The downside to using this ability is that it requires a deep level of concentration and a quiet environment.

-Weaponry: Due to his extensive training as a hunter by the church, Mariano has become a very skilled swordsman.

-Blessed: If Mariano blesses himself with holy water and engages in a fight soon after, any creature that comes into contact with his skin will get a sharp burn. The downside to using this ability is that it only works so long as the holy water remains on his forehead. If the water dries off or simple gets smudged then the ability will fail.

-Knowledge: Many years studying creatures has allowed Mariano to be able to easily identify them and discover their weaknesses

Weapons:
Mariano carries two swords (one steel and one silver) of simple design – a simple hilt with little to no decorative design on the blade. He also carries a small silver dagger and an experimental pocket pistol.

Maria Insetto & Zanzara

26 // The Butterfly // Female

Species: Human

Affiliation: Maria is a debt collector for the Bardi family, a banking family who controls one bank around the Jewish ghetto. The family itself has no unlawful intentions, and all the money they make is made legitimately, on their part at least. They increase their fiscal property by investing the money they keep safe for their clients into local businesses through loans. If someone doesn't pay their loan off, Maria gets send in to retrieve the money through less friendly manners.

Appearance:Maria is a slender women with pale white skin. She has very delicate features, which give her a young and fair appearance. Her eyes are a deep dark brown, that blend in with the black of her pupils, leaving them without much detail. This goes well with her incredibly dark hair, which she keeps in a loose ponytail with a simple piece of thin rope. It hangs around the lower part of her neck, as it's more to keep her hair out of the way than for aesthetic purposes. She usually wears simple clothing during the day, blending in with the poorer commoners of Venice, with a dirty beige ankle length skirt, and a white shirt.

At night she wears a completely black outfit that covers most of her body. It fits tightly to allow her to move freely.

Zanzara is a huge fly, around fifteen centimeters high, and thirty long. It has a black exoskeleton that covers up his insectoid wings. His body is mostly fleshy, in contrast to most insects. The wing coverings are the only part of Zanzara that are actually covered with an exoskeleton. His flesh is a deep red, and it seems like there is an orange glow coming from his insides. In a completely dark room, this orange glow can provide minimal lighting, even. His face is a small, especially in comparison to the huge size of its body. He has two sets of eight small black eyes grouped together at either side of his head. His mouth is at the exact front, and is a circle with a rows upon rows of very sharp teeth.

Personality: Maria has a very determined attitude. She sets out with a goal, and completes it. No work-arounds, no distractions. Her mental state is one of pure focus. Maria likes to be as quick and effective as possible, taking her job extremely seriously.

Outside of her working environment, Maria is looser, although these same traits show through. She'll be able to laugh and take a joke outside of her work, but she's still very determined in her actions, and does not allow herself to be distracted.

Maria can shift into her focused serious mode immediately. As soon as she notices anything being out of the ordinary, she will completely change mood, and immediately go into focus.

This dedication to focus that Maria possesses makes her a very organized person. As she does not, and maybe even cannot, do half work, her personal space is in pristine condition, and this perfectionistic attitude translates to all parts of her life. Her appearance is something Maria cares a lot about, for example, although it may not be in an aesthetic way, but more so in a fashion that is efficient and clean.

Being raised as a maiden gives her a certain appreciation for the posher things in life. Etiquette and speaking in proper sentences is something that Maria finds very important. She might slip a comment about it in casual conversation, but usually keeps her mouth shut about it, just making a small mental footnote next to someone's name instead.

History: Maria's mother was a maid, her father a cleaner, and they still are. Maria was raised in a very homely environment, and a very busy one with that. Growing up in the mansion of the de' Medici family in Florence, she spend a lot of time playing with the children of the other workers the rich bankers family employed. Her childhood was completely trouble free, and she just enjoyed her careless life, and her simple education to becoming a maid.

One awful night, only two years ago, however, Maria woke up to a stomach turning feeling, as if her insides tried to escape. It was that night that she met Zanzarra, as the fly burst through her stomach, as if Maria's skin was a soft dough it crawled through. Maria screamed as she saw the insect emerge from stomach, and the girl, completely unknowing about the magical world that the masked night-goers emerged themselves in, let her voice shake the windows. The people in her building arrived, and quickly noticed the giant fly zooming around. However, as soon as one of them tried to act against it, it shot back to its place of origin: Maria's belly. Leaving no trace, no scars, no tears, not even blood, the other workers were convinced Maria was either infected or cursed. They banished her from the de' Medici grounds, and with that, the Florence city limits.

Moving to Venice, Maria learned to control Zanzarra, and educated herself on the connection between herself and the creature. She learned how she could control it, and how it was an extension of herself. She basically discovered as much about the bug as possible, however, of its origins, she found no trace. In this period, she got taken in by the Bardi family, who gave her a room and food, with a small pay, if she became their debt-collecter, something Maria and her recent companion felt very suited for.

The last year, Maria spend working for the Bardi family, chasing down those who still owed the bankers, and making them pay through the least delicate of ways: violence.

Powers/Skills:
Zanzarra: Maria has full control over an insectoid creature that can emerge from her stomach at any moment, and return there without leaving any trace. Maria and Zanzarra share all senses, and the bug can only act independently if Maria allows him too. The relationship between the two is very clear, Zanzarra is just an extension of Maria. Zanzarra's independence she describes as very similar to breathing. One doesn't breathe consciously, unless they want to.

Maria doesn't need to eat herself, instead it is Zanzarra who needs to consume, as it turns out he is not only part of Maria, he is her stomach. Maria herself can eat, and through unknown ways, it will get processed through Zanzarra, but if he himself eats, there is no need for Maria too.

Zanzarra is unkillable, and heals incredibly fast. Any cut or slice will be gone in the blink of an eye, even splitting the creature in half will have him reform in a matter of seconds. It can be incapacitated for a couple of seconds, but it can't be killed. Not as long as Maria is alive.

Weapons: Maria's main weapon is Zanzarra, but besides that, she also uses a simple iron dagger to protect herself with. She isn't incredibly proficient with it, but she's able to use the dagger nonetheless.

Arc 1: The Fall of an Empire

Venice has always been known for its scattered society. No unifying power seemed to control the city. Neither the church, the doge or the families seemed to have a grasp on it. The only man that ever came close was Gerardo Prodigi. A entrepreneur who in his lifetime gained control in every single economic branch of Venice, and ended up control around one tenth of all the wealth in Venice. His wife birthed three sons during her lifetime, who he raised to be businessmen themselves. Where Gerardo was a smart, charming and respected man however, his sons were not. Greedy, vile, and not willing to step down from their golden thrones, figuratively speaking.

Today however, Gerardo passed away, completely unexpectedly by the means of a heart attack, and it send a wave of turmoil throughout the city. As the word spread like wildfire, the hungry families all started plotting ways to thief away Prodigi properties, to find ways to play the Prodigi siblings, to make the family cannibalize itself.

This arc will deal with the collapse of the Prodigi empire that had Venice in its grip, and how the families are dealing with it. Families can pick off branches of the Prodigi family, as long as the size of these acquisitions is reasonable. This can happen in many a ways, be as creative as you want. Small scale family war about who gets the Prodigi brothel? A liquidation of a Prodigi employee to gain control over one of their storage houses? It's all allowed. If any questions pop up about how this works, please ask them in this thread.

Marcus Moretti
Draconian

Name: Marcus Moretti
Alias: Ignis
Age: 123 (looks 23)
Gender: M

Affiliation/Job: Moretti is a hitman who works for the * family.

Appearance: Moretti is a slightly bearded individual, his face being strapped with a neatly kept stubble that covers most of the lower half of his face. With slightly narrow ocean blue eyes, luscious black hair and a thin nose to add many would consider Moretti to be a good-looking fellow. His stature just adds to his appearance more than anything being 5'11" in height and very fit, as someone from his role would expected to be. Being a draconian has also meant his skin is extremely durable, an aspect which benefits him greatly in conflict. The only part of his body that detracts from his image are his massive claw feet, a fact which bothers Moretti.

The mask Moretti owns is significant to him, as it was owned by his now deceased father. It's the only piece of memorabilia he owns of his father.

Personality: (Have at it.)

History: (This is allowed to be very brief)

Powers/Skills: Being a draconian Moretti gains all the powers another draconian may have, such as extremely durable skin and the ability to breathe flames at will. He is also at absolutely top shape physically, and with his other abilities means that he is just as twice as strong as an average human. He can more than efficiently use a swordin battle too.

However, one thing which sets back Moretti more than anything is his speed, for he is fairly slow compared relatively to your average hit man; however his brute force and range with his fire-breathing ability normally more than make up for this.

Weapons: A silver sword donated to him by the * family.

• Amarone Vinicio-Vermiglio
The Gourmet

Personal Information

Race: VampireAge: 520 years oldGender: Male

Affiliation/Job:
House Vermiglio. Apart from overseeing the Vinicio vineyards and wineries scattered across the Veneto region, Amarone operates his own supernatural high-end restaurant which is conveniently located next to Rosabella Vermiglio's headquarters, whereby he handpicks its midnight menu himself to satisfy his clientele's ravenous desire for meat. Amarone's duty to House Vermiglio specializes in espionage, but he is also an unofficial assassin who loves to accompany the heiress on her execution missions. He also loves to give his often unwanted-but-reluctantly-taken opinion to Rosa on her male prostitutes.

Mask:
Spoiler:

History:
Amarone has always lived a life of luxury, being born to two aristocratic families. His mother was a Vermiglio, the younger sister to the current Baron, and his father was the Lord of House Vinicio. From young, he was expected to take on the reins of the family winemaking business and his education revolved around shaping his gentlemanly and epicurean tastes. He is a close cousin to the Vermiglio heiress and is often her consultant and confidante.

Personality:
Amarone is a debonair gentleman who carries himself with such confidence that emanates like an aura of power that instills either fear or awe in the common man. And he is very aware of that. He is quite the vain and flamboyant vampire as well, consistently investing great effort into his image and presentation, striving to be the best main course for the world to feast its eyes. With humans, he has a morbid fascination, having an affection that a master would have to his dog. Where most vampires would not intervene in human affairs, Amarone is reckless in regards to that, often forming relationships with humans when a vampire should know better in order to satiate his thirst for knowledge on the nature of humans (and to seek out ingredients for his next main dish).

Amarone rarely lets on what he is feeling or thinking, perfectly dissociating his mind from his body and turning his face into a mask of its own. He'll never show weakness, trepidation or fear, especially before its source.

Powers/Skills:
✞ Enhanced speed, strength, and durability
✞ Ability to transform anyone into vampires via bites
Compared to other vampires, Amarone has a sharper sense of smell and taste, cultivated through his pursuit in the culinary arts.
✞ The Vermiglio family ring (Illusion and Perception) - All members of the house Vermiglio posses the family heirloom-- a ruby signet worn on the ring that grants the power of Illusion to the Vermiglio bearer. It is an old magic that has been used by the ancestors to blend in human society and not get caught in the early times. The ring gives the wearer to completely change their appearance, as well as the ability to modify the perceptions on how people see and feel them, to mask the coldness of their skin. It is so advanced that it is not easily uncovered by simple magic, and would need enough mastery to completely use the heirloom to it's full potential.

Rosabella "Thorn" Vermiglio
Heiress of the Vermiglio House

Personal Information

Race: VampireAge: 520 years oldGender: Female

Affiliation/Job:
Rosabella, Rosa, Vermiglio is one of the many heirs and heiresses of the Vermiglio house, a family known for having the best brothels in Venice. Granted, the word "many" in her standards ranges from four to five people at a time. She currently acts as a supervisor of a portion of the brothels that the family owns, making monthly reports of earnings as well as trends, and various other information that the head wants her to get. She also works as one of the expensive, secret prostitutes along with her brothers and sisters, specially called for whenever they are needed to gather information, extend an invitation, assassinate via bedroom, or to simply amuse them for the night.

Appearance:
Rosa is fairly tall, standing at around five feet eight inches without heels. As she is a vampire, she has very pale skin and long, wavy black hair that reaches down to her waist area (unless she is using her powers). She has amber eyes that seem to glow in the light of the night, being the first trait that usually catches a person's attention... aside from her lips that are coloured a deep, dark red.

As a Vermiglio, it would be a given that she has to look her best. Rosa is usually seen wearing simple dresses with small, intricate designs that are easy to wear and remove, coupled with her family ring. It's plain enough to blend in with the commoners, yet still holds the elegance of a proud vampire. She also carries around a parasol that serves to cover her delicate skin from sunlight... if she ever needs to.

At night, her attire changes into a shorter version of her normal dresses for extra mobility, with a special rose gold mask that she specifically chose for it's beauty and elegance. Her weapons are also hidden under her dress, and some others. She likes to cover up with a long black cloak that makes her seem invisible at night to the untrained eye.

Personality:
Rosa is all business. There's nothing that she loves more than to work, earn cash, and work. Contrary to popular belief, however, she's actually quite approachable, although she does keep up her mature persona all the time. This does face a problem as people (commoners) would see Rosa as a snobbish, rich girl that would only hang out with the fellow nobles. Not that they're wrong. Rosa can be seen as quite a stoic person, as she rarely complains of any problem. Instead, she tries to fix it, in the most efficient way possible while always aiming for perfection.

Due to being in a prestigious family, Rosa has quite an eye for treasure. She has the tendency to seek for the best, and only the best of everything. As much as Rosa is quite proud of her lineage, she's also quite tired. So tired, that she couldn't care less if someone would kill her right then and there. Anyone would if they've lived for five hundred years, right? She'd rather consider death to be a blessing, but would still love to die in style. Maybe covered in gold and bathed in moonlight.

History:
Rosabella is one of the "few" people that were part of the inner circle (a.k.a the near ancestral side) of the Vermiglio family. As such, she was used to fame, luxury, and of course, responsibility, as all of them had duties to do as not to taint the prestigious family name. Out of all the heirs and heiresses, Rosabella was seen was the most mature out of the bunch, resulting in her getting most of the work (as well as the share) of what she would be inheriting in the near future. She doesn't have as much connections as her other siblings, although she does confide in a close cousin of the Vermiglio house from time to time.

Powers/Skills:
✞ Vampire - Enhanced speed, strength, healing, and durability. Also the ability to transform anyone into a vampire via bites.
✞ Seduction - This is a practiced skill by Rosa. She can easily find a way to "seduct" other people either through traditional or unconventional means.
✞ Limited assassination ability - This is a needed trait to know by all heirs and heiresses of the Vermiglio family. Rosa can defend herself in situations, and use daggers to slice through enemies. However, it is not enough when actually confronted with a real assassin, unless mastered.

Weapons:
✞ Daggers x 3
✞ Powders - A small variety of powder that are mostly used for the brothel (sleep, aphrodisiacs, etc), but can also be used for other purposes.

"Anything less would be uncivilized."

I'm making a list of all the introduced families, with the property they have. I'm just posting what I can quickly figure out. If you guys could post your own families and property they own, that'd be great.

Prodigi - Banks, ships, docks, small business, jewelers, etc.
No players

Bardi - Singular Bank
Ice

This is just what I introduced currently, I'll add player additions once I read about them in the IC, or if someone mentions them here.

• Interesting role-play concept.

I might join. I was thinking about having a demon character, but it seems in this rendition they are just body snatchers still concerned about the material realm. And I'm not sure if I want to be a vampire because it's such a common choice, but I can't help but romanticize it modernly like so many others do.

Questions regarding Ghouls: A ghoul has to feed on rotted flesh, does it? No exception to its state, like the freshly fallen? And if a ghoul can mend itself with other body parts, does that mean those parts have to be taken of a deceased person in some sort of decay? Can appended parts become revitalized even, like say, they attach a bad leg and through the demonic properties of a ghoul, strong muscle tissue forms for it to become functioning and healthy for use?

Thanks in advanced.

You could create a character that believes himself to be a biblical demon from hell trapped in the mortal realm, but that might not be what you're looking for. Other planes of existence are not a thing yet in Venice, so actual demons from hell aren't a thing currently.

They feed in rotten flesh, but the hunger is a mental urge, not a physical one. Their hunger manifests as an addiction of some sort, though. A ghoul that hungers starts foaming from the mouth, and going mad. A young ghoul will probably only feed on rotten flesh to fight their cravings, but a more ancient ghoul might be less adhering to the conviction that only rotten flesh sustains them. Depending on the character, they might fight their hunger with fresh flesh, or strawberries.
The body parts they attach to themselves don't have to be rotten, though. A vicious ghoul might rip off the arm of an enemy and replace it's own lost limb with it. Because they function on unnatural forces, they don't need any functioning muscles to operate a limb. It's their demonic essence controlling their body.

The first bit confused me with your wording. It seems to me like the way you described it, you talk about physical hunger of the flesh, and then later use the same word of craving to describe that the intensity of it has nothing to do with eating or needing to eat.

So, ghouls eat flesh, but are afflicted with some kind of strong desire or yearning for some... unspecified thing, is what I'm getting at the moment. And to combat that, they resort to over-indulgence, whether in a specific thing or activity like an addiction, or as a general glut.

The mouth foaming bit--for me--you make it seem like it's more of a withdrawal symptom than when I think of the slight psychological reminder that is being hungry, like when you're working all day and suddenly you realize that you could go for a sandwich.

So to recap, ghouls eat flesh. Unrelated, they suffer a strong desire for some unspecified thing, and after a while of not fulfilling it, they suffer some adverse, psychological withdrawal. They regain control of themselves after binging on whatever is needed to satisfy them. Yes?

Oh, okay. Yeah, that's cool.

Almost. Physically, a ghoul doesn't need to eat, as it's body will sustain itself indefinitely. Mentally, the have the urge to feed on rotten flesh, though, and not doing so can manifest in withdrawal symptoms. Because this reaction comes from a psychological place, instead of a physical, ghouls can change what they hunger for with time.

They can gradually replace their urges with an addiction just as strong then, should they will it. It just so happens that in the beginning, the instinct is for corpse's flesh.

Correct?

Correct?

It could die down, or be replaced with another urge. See it as a base state, that can change with age and exprience. There's no set direction it would evolve to.

By the way, Ice, any ideas on when this roleplay might close to new applications, if it closes at all? I'm mulling over whether I'd like to apply and would still like to participate in this arc if I do decide to join. Will they be any open spots left if I lurk around for a few days, or would it best for me to just reserve...?

I don't plan on closing SUs this arc. There isn't a bigger storyline that limits new players currently, as the current story is fairly open. I wouldn't worry too much about it, SUs will still be open for a while.

That's good! So it is the perfect time to join. I'll definitely think about it; thank you.
