I just saw Interstellar on the big screen. I had high expectations coming in - Nolan is my favorite director and I love all his films. But I had avoided most trailers and info in order to not know what was coming for me. WARNING: this thread will spoil it for you so watch it first and then come back ;)

And wow, it was amazing. It had so many wow-moments and phenomena explored that I was really at the edge of my seat half the time. Nolan and space and dimensions and time. Such a combo.

In this thread, we can discuss what stuff really meant (like whether or not Cooper reached Brand in time!) without worrying about spoilers.

So what did you think of Christopher Nolan's latest installation?

I AM GONNA BE IN THIS THREAD ONCE I SEE IT BUT I DON'T THINK I'LL BE ABLE TO SEE IT THIS WEEKEND. GIVE ME A WEEK AND I WILL DISCUSS. I AM EXCITED.

Watch this yesterday the cinematography was STUNNING this has to be the best looking movie this decade the scenes when in space looking at out the stars :O

I don't want to ruin any of the film for anyone but I was hyped for months to see this and it even managed to surpass my high expectations and im sure best director, best actor, best picture, best cinematography are pretty much nailed on

Okay let's put stuff related to the story in spoilers for now then ;)

    But yes when
    Spoiler:

Tars and Case were the best characters, hands down. Very creative imagining of robots - at least I have never seen anything quite like them before.

I really liked this movie. Reminiscent of 2001: A Space Odyssey in certain ways, which I also loved.

Nolan did quite a number with this topic. I found it had enough of the scientific jargon to appease the space-travel nerds, while still being relatable to people like me, who have heard the term "singularity" before, but couldn't explain in great detail exactly what it is. I loved the multiple themes in this movie: the idea of "doing the right thing," betrayal, love, sacrifice. And a great foundation built on space travel, wormholes and black holes, the bending of time-space, and the idea that the Universe has more than three dimensions. Truly an epic, intertwined (pun intended) storyline.

I thought the character development was fantastic. Motives were always super clear, and that made emotional moments absolutely heart-wrenching when paired with the amazing acting. McConaughey made me cry. No holding back from him - he played a loveable, relatable, and inspiring character, forced to choose between two options he didn't particularly like, and live with the consequences. Even thinking back on his performance gives me chills.

Visuals were, as expected, amazing. Awesome representations of wormholes, new worlds and higher dimensions. The musical soundtrack was super triumphant (when applicable), full of high octave arpeggios. The sound design was also very strong: it completed immersed the audience into space and was in total harmony with the storytelling.

I'm speaking like a real fanboy here, and I do want to make time to see it again in theaters. But I do have to point out: it gets a bit cheesy near the end. Those of you who saw it know what I'm referring to. I really loved it but when the cheese started oozing I had to plug my nose.

I saw this movie the other day and gotta say, Nolan does a pretty damn good job once again with the plot/story arc. Reminded me a lot of how complex and good Inception was - another movie of his - and Interstellar had such good visuals and accompanying soundtrack to it. Definitely would recommend it to people looking for a good movie (although it's pretty calm long what it being 2hr and 47min)

One thing bothered me though...McConaughey had like, a southern accent at the beginning of the movie and then completely lost it near the end. It really bugged me to say the least.

Up at 2AM since I have been pondering about something for the last 2 hours and can't make up my mind
    Spoiler:

I put this as a spoiler as technically it probably counts as one

Haha, while I agree that characters in a movie should keep up their traits unless something makes them change it, I have to point out that I am a dialect chameleon. When I hang around with people who talk with a certain accent for a while, I start sounding just like them. So technically, Cooper could have just changed his accent a bit since he went away from home ;p

That was probably the case then. Still, gotta admit, consistency would have been nice haha.

Watching this movie has made me realize how much I fear about our future, since movies in general are suppose to bring out messages for us to take notes on. I also feel that humans should never leave Earth to begin with, for it defies natural order and makes us invasive species for other uninhabited planets, and living in space is actually harmful to our health for those who have seen Wall-E, which also tackles space colonies.

Still though, the visuals were great and the acting was superb. This film better win for best film of the year and not The Anwser to Everything, or else there's going to be a riot from movie viewers who demanded pure original films.

Eventually mankind will have to leave Earth in about 1 billion years the sun will begin to die and enter supernova (by that time we should have some form of a galactic empire)

But instead of leaving Earth completely I would rather colonize some other planets and have humans on more than a single planet.. Mars could be a good start and only ever leave Earth as a last option when litreally the planet is doomed

    SPOILERS ABOUND IN THIS POST

holy fuuuuuuuuuuuck this was really good. like way better than I thought it was gonna be. for the first couple of hours or so I thought that it and 2001: A Space Odyssey were technically polar opposites (aside from the cinematography and look of the whole thing) -- while 2001 thrived on being cold, clinical and incredibly oppressive and didn't let you get close to the characters at all, Interstellar is half science-fiction epic, half melodrama. there is so much emotion and sentiment packed into this thing. when McConaughey was looking back on all the messages from his family that had amassed over the past 23 years or whatever, I cried like a ****ing baby.

I saw the main twist coming roughly 6 miles away, though. like, of course it was gonna be him communicating with her from another dimension. who else?

also, after Matt Damon died it went from complete opposite of 2001 to a total homage to 2001. the scene where he goes through the black hole is like a carbon copy of the Stargate sequence from 2001 -- from the way it's shot, to how the camera pans back to the astronaut's terrified face during the whole process, to how he wakes up on some foreign planet at the end without really knowing where he is. however, this movie's obviously waaay more plot-based than 2001 was and obviously more modernized and warmer tonally.

most criticisms of the film I've read is that it tries far too hard to be intellectual. this is absolutely true. it definitely loses me at the end as far as its concepts and themes go: not because they're confusing, simply because you have no freakin clue how the hell the characters reached these conclusions (or didn't reach a certain conclusion, or something). it's trying to be a huge important Statement while totally abandoning any aspiration of simply being a watchable, entertaining film -- which is perfectly fine in my book; I just think that this could have been exponentially better if they ditched all the silly pretensions that marred the film's last 40 minutes or so. and that's not to say that last 40 minutes wasn't exhilarating filmmaking at its finest or that I wasn't on the edge of my seat and about to start Weeping from it. (also the lady next to me in the theater totally lost it while he was pushing the books trying to get his daughter's attention at the end -- meanwhile I was just sitting there with my jaw on the ****ing floor wondering what the hell was going on, but in a good way.)

as far as its length goes, it always felt like it was coming to a conclusion towards the end but always ended up just continuing along (which was ultimately a good thing).

Matthew McConaughey was very, very good. like I said earlier, that scene where he's watching the old messages were completely affecting and me and my male friend were just sitting there borderline sobbing at that point jesus christ. Matt Damon was Matt Damon, which is to say I'm not offended by his performance but I wasn't exactly frothing at the mouth. Jessica Chastain was great. Anne Hathaway was pretty good.

overall 8/10 second best movie of the year so far to Gone Girl and I would absolutely watch it again. I rambled a lot, but feel free to pick apart my post and respond at me as I'd love to talk about it.

OH how did I forget -- this could be the most beautiful movie I've ever seen. there were so many scenes that just took my breath away -- the way the barren, icy planet looked, the huge tidal wave, the sepia-toned shots of the huge empty plantations in the beginning, the cornfields, the fires, the shots of the craft approaching the wormhole, the shots of the craft just floating through space in general. ugghghghghghguhguhguhguhguhg. also I wished I'd gone with a girl so I could weep hard with her; it'd be kinda weird to start crying on my friend in the middle (even though I more or less did it anyway).

also (this is the last thing hopefully) the score was so so so so so so so great.

Brilliantly summed up your post excellent
I totally agree man this film completly makes you connect with the characters and you feel every moment, that sceme where he is reading messages from 27 years back is just completely crushing, watching in a full cinema litreally crying your eyes out trying not to feel like a fool. The first film that has really had this attachment this year apart from TFIOS & Lone Survivor

I thought the Mann story part was a little boring to be honest but the scene paid of with that rotation docking manouver the black whole section I found a little weird but could understand what was going on.

I looooooooooooooooved this film. I think I "got" most of the philosophical issues and concepts the movie was addressing so the intellectual aspect wasn't distracting for me at all.

Just a side point: it's very reasonable that Cooper would change his accent over the course of the film. People can change their accent according to social context. The people he goes on his journey with are a lot different from the people he grew up with.

Yeah me and my mum spoke yesterday and eventually agreed that it would be worth another 20 dollar to go and see it a second time in the theatres. Music and visuals and time/dimension-theories put this film on my top list. Can't wait for the soundtrack to come out, hope it'll end up on Spotify.

    Spoiler:

    tl;dr

Prepare to be amazed for nearly three hours

I AM SO EXCITED ONE OF MY HOUSEMATES IS TOTALLY NERDING OUT OVER IT AND IS DEMANDING THAT WE ALL GO AND SEE IT AND AAAAAAAA

i had to scroll really quick past this thread to avoid spoilers just so that i could make this ****post and i dont even care i cannot wait don't judge me
