A rather simple question that hopefully someone can answer. In Generation 3 do they use different tilse/palettes to represent the change of day to night, or do they simply have some sort of shader program that darkens the palette?

At least if I remember right Generation 3 had a night and day thing going...

If I remember correctly, Gen 3 had no day or night. It was introduced in Gen 2, and then taken awy in Gen 3.

Don't take this as fact, though. I'm not 100% sure

    EDIT:

    Quote from Bulbapedia:
" In Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen , however,
the time function is completely absent,
allowing it to be more like the Generation I
games. This also makes it impossible for Eevee
to evolve into either Espeon or Umbreon in
    these games."

    The article also says

" Unlike Generation II, Generation III had
    no separate time periods..."

I think that includes Day/Night through RSE. Look for confirmation, though. I'm not entirely sure.

Well I'll be, turns out the original gen III did not have a night and day system.

This kind of makes that irrelevant though.

So my question still remains :p

By the way the DNS comes with seasons! Which I'm guessing DOES involve a change in tilesets. But if that is the case then there'd also have to be another tileset for the night and day cycle so I'm guessing (and it is just a guess) that to save on tiles they would have simply made a shading system.

    Is this for ROM-Hacking? :/

Because if it is, you're in the wrong section.
If not, essentials has D+N with it.
Just set an area's metadata to outside=true and when you load the map D/N will be applied.

Well I suppose it would be a question for rom hacking...

Also I'm not entirely sure what Pokemon Essentials is or the potential of Pokemon RPG's.

Pokémon Essentials is an add on to RPG Maker XP, which gives it all the essentials to make a Pokémon Game.

    Pretty much.
