Anyone find it ironic the name of the first Pokemon movie?

  • It was called Pokemon: The first movie. Seems kind of ironic as if they knew they were going to make a million of them, LMAO!!

Well, it was originally released as Pocket Monsters the Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back! in Japan, and the subtitle for it in English included that. By the time it was released outside of Japan, the second movie was already out and Pokemon was a HUGE thing though, so not only was there already more than one, but it was obvious the next one was going to be released outside of Japan too.

Meloetta's post pretty much explains it. I think if they called it that, they would already had plans for a second movie.

At the time Mewtwo Strikes Back came out in US theaters, I knew that the Pok?mon craze had quite a ways to go at the time considering "The First Movie" branding, and that its follow-ups would get similar theatrical treatment as well (at least up to Spell of the Unown, as 4ever and Heroes were only seen in a very limited number of venues outside of Japan due to being released by Miramax, but by the fifth movie, the craze had died down quite a bit anyway).
