Are R/B still worth playing?

Yes yes yes yes. You need to at least try them out to find the origin of the Pokémon franchise. They may be very dated, but they have a special charm to them.

Just don't judge them against the newer ones due to the old Game Boy being archaic nowadays.

I'd play R/B just for the glitches. Seems kinda strange how programming errors make a game bucketloads of more fun. Other than that, I guess you could do a Nuzlocke or some other challenge. If you're playing it the way it was supposed to be played, then just stick with FR/LG.
