Yeah, somethign to that extent. I don't believe there was any mention of cubone in his dialouge IIRC. Him being at Pokemon tower for that purpose seems a little less likely than the Raticate dying in that vien now doesn't it?
To be honest it never even occurred to me that he was after a Cubone/Marowak. As I mentioned above, I always assumed he was there to mourn over a dead Pokemon.

  • Here's the complete dialogue:

    BLUE: Hey,
    RED! What
    brings you here?
    Your POKéMON
    don't look dead!
    I can at least
    make them faint!
    Let's go, pal!

    BLUE: What?
    You stinker!
    I took it easy on
    you too!

    How's your POKéDEX
    coming, pal?
    I just caught a
    CUBONE!
    I can't find the
    grown-up MAROWAK
    yet!
    I doubt there are
    any left! Well, I
    better get going!
    I've got a lot to
    accomplish, pal!
    Smell ya later!

Before the Pokemon Tower: starter, Pidgeotto, Raticate and Kadabra. After: starter, Pidgeotto, Kadabra, Exeggcute and Gyarados. And Raticate wasn't weak in RGBY. He was a game breaker.

Although I'm not sure if the implication was intentional.

Yep. I killed him myself. Don't tell me you didn't unlock that cutscene where an emotionally wrought Red deals with the consequences of his actions and finds his childhood innocence shattered forever.

It's pretty much a prelude to crazy mountain Red in GSC.

  • Gary never says why he is there, though I'd like to think its cause my persian ate his raticate, but he could be there just to visit one of PROFESSOR OAK'S dead pokemon...

Or just to catch gasly and cubone... since, you know, Professor Oak asked both of you to catch one of each species of pokemon.
    (P.S. I love that cut-scene!)

Ah so the dialogue Myles posted could suggest that he may have been there to just catch Pokemon after all (but hey its been about 10 years since I played through R/B/Y so I guess my memory isnt all that bad on the first few lines)

(Please note it may not necessarily be his Raticate that died if he were there to visit the grave of a dead Pokemon)

I love how people over exaggerate things. Therefore, was the birth of creepy pasta. 99.9% of these stories aren't true...
1.) he got bored of raticate and replaced him
    2.) he wanted a cubone/marowak
3.) he heard you were coming to the tower

  • I believe it's possible, there's a good chance that it was just Deposited/Released. Well, anyways, I do believe it could happen, but it's just a theory that will probably never be confirmed or denied.:/

  • I highly doubt that his Raticate died, he could have been in the tower to catch the Pokémon that were in there, his dialogue does say he's caught a Cubone and he switched the Raticate for another Pokémon.

"Hey,RED! What brings you here? Your POKéMON don't look dead! I can at least
make them faint! Let's go, pal!" is just him antagonising Red. That's the impression I get at least. It seems that people have read into this a bit too much. "/

  • When you say he went to Pokemon Tower to catch a Cubone, it is pretty unlikely. Think about it, who would go to a tpwer to catch a Cubone??
I mean, no one new that the ghost was Marowak except for Red and Mr. Fugi, maybe Team Rocket too.
Also someone right above said that Cubon was intended to evolve into Kangaskan, until Nintendo changed it at the last minute and replaced it with Marowak. They then said that Missingo evolved into Kangaskan(jokingly). But think about it.
Kangaskagns removal of a pre evo, could have resulted in the appearence of missingo. But that is just Speculation.
I do think Ratticate died, because it seems to soften Blue up a bit, even calling Red 'pal'. And I don't think Blue would give two hoots about a Pokemon Graveyard unless he had a reason to be there.

Yeah, there was already a thread on this a while back. My thought is he simply put it in the box. I don't think it was the intention of the creators of the game to make people believe that he had killed one of his pokemon. Don't really know how you would be able to kill a pokemon anyway
he might have not killed it, it might have just died, i dont think so though

I thought he would just release it. At least that is what I do to mine.

  • Whoa I never noticed that. I don't think he would have let one of his pokemon die, despite the person that he is. He probably just put it in his box

Although I don't think BLUE's Raticate died or whatever (come on, it's a kid's game, the cemetery is there for the drama and for the ghosts, might as well say Jynx is a porn actress), I love to ignite this story.

I don't think it is real, but it certainly concedes a whole different side to the Pokémon games. It makes them more mature, it gives BLUE a soul and an involving character dimension, it contributes to the interest of the player. And that, my friends, is absolutely priceless.

Please do come up with some more side stories. But a bit more ellaborate than the Cubone > Kanghaskhan one. Not believable at all. And how the &%"N did Missingno. got into that?

  • I've always liked the idea that Blue's Raticate died; I don't think it's creepy, it's more kinda sweet. The idea makes complete sense and it allows you to be at least sympathetic to the jerk. He did seem genuinely annoyed that you just wander in the Tower and wasn't he silently staring at a gravestone when you come across him?

I like to think it was all on purpose as a bit of an easter egg of sorts. Would you have thought something like that as a kid? No, you'd just be like "Oh it's Gary, time for a battle!" So it's for the older ones who decide to stop and piece it all together.

True, when I first got Blue, and I saw Gary/Green/Blue I was always like "Oh, I've got to battle him again, are my Pokémon healed?" I've never thought about the reason he might've been at that place. Still, I think it's better to say his Raticate died, it adds a bit of reality in the game, and it's a better reason to visit the Pokémon Tower than to just catch some more Pokémon.

Looks like, to me, hes just there looking for a Cubone and a Marowak.

Though I remember reading that the original reason he was there was because his pokemon died but it was taken out cause it was too scary for kids. Could also be apart of the Pokemon Black story, I cant remember.

Edit: It was posted a few spots above. Still dont see him asking if you know what its like to have a Pokemon die..

That picture isn't prove or anything, it's a creepypasta story, and thus is just an assumption made by someone. Gamefreak/Nintendo has never stated the real reason your rival was there.

  • "I just caught a CUBONE! I can't find the grown-up MAROWAK yet!"
He does have a pokedex he needs to fill and it's implied that there's cubone around that area.
Also, the skull on a cubone's head more closely resembles an aerodactyl skull than a kangaskan skull. It's very likely that cubones and marowaks inhabit areas near aerodactyl fossils.
