Minigames! Chances are we've all played at least one video game in our lives that has had a minigame of some sort contained within it, be it a simple game of poker or something a bit more complex. Some minigames are just idle distractions, some are essential to game progression, and others are parts of much larger sidequests.

So, what do you think of minigames? Are they a welcome addition, or something that you typically ignore in favour of the main adventure? What are some of your favourite/least favourite minigames?

Personally, I like minigames as long as they aren't thrust upon you...which they typically are, especially in RPGs. Minigame-associated trophies are one of the biggest banes of my existence, especially as a lot of minigames are either poorly designed or, worse, have a luck factor which determines whether or not you win. They're a welcome distraction, but when they become a necessary diversion, that's when their flaws become all too apparent. Unless they're relatively easy, or have very good in-game prizes or trophies associated with them, I tend to avoid them in favour of the main story.

Favourites? Triple Triad in FFVIII. I think I spent more time playing that than I did the actual main story. There was an element of chance in it which often came back to screw me over at the end (Chains are horrid, and the "Random" rule was effectively a death sentence) but I love collecting things, and I enjoyed tracking the cards down and doing the bigger sidequest involved with it. Plus, Shuffle or Boogie. I could listen to that for hours. The hacking minigames in BioShock were quite fun for me as well: simple yet occasionally frantic, with good rewards for finishing. Namely automated turrents, bots, or opened doors for prizes. The Anaconda minigame in Timesplitters 2 was fun as well...it was just Snake, but the background music was catchy. I'm not sure I'd consider collosseum modes minigames as much as I would sidequests, but if they did count, I'd include pretty much every single one I've ever played, for their assorted cameos and superbosses.

Least favourites...I have too many of these. Blitzball from Final Fantasy X is probably the biggest one. Whilst chocobo racing was annoying, there wasn't much of it. Blitzball required hours of time, and AI varied from pathetic (Rondos) to aggravatingly competent (Al Bhed Psyches) and the views made controlling the characters difficult at the best of times. The less said about Kingdom Hearts' awfully designed and numerous minigames (Gummi Ship missions and Ice Cream Beat are the two biggest offenders) the better, as well. Red Light/Green Light in Tales of Symphonia, where the kids liked to boot you out of the way at the least opportune moment, was infuriating, especially as it carried Genis' best weapon as the prize. Also, anything slot machine or poker related. If a game has a casino, and you have to go in there for trophies or weaponry, it's bound to be an absolute disaster...

The mini-game that sticks out in my mind the most and that I liked the most was Xenosaga Episode III's HaKox mini-game. It was a sort of puzzle game where you had to guide the characters to the proper colored goal(s) (they moved by themselves), basically. There would be different colored block corresponding to circle/square/triangle/X that would move when you pressed the button, and that was your only way of directly influencing things, besides speeding up or slowing down character movement. Had a lot of levels to play through, and you got some good prizes from clearing the worlds (like a Segment Address decoder key and Jr.'s best weapon).
    Here's a video:
    Spoiler:

That music is catchy as fuck.

  • I think my favorite mini game would have to be blitzball from FFX, and least favorite would have to be any casino type minigame that isn't poker. Not only is it entirely up to luck when you play a slot machine, but they pretty much always screw you over, making you have to go out and just build up money until you have enough to just buy all the coins for whatever it is you're trying to buy/achieve. At least with card games you have some chance to use some sort of strategy.

  • I'm generally not all that fond of mini-games, but there were quite a few that I enjoyed, including the Cucco Challenge from Minish Cap, "Break the Targets" from Smash, and practically ANY mini-game from Croc: Legend of the Gobbos. There might have been a few decent mini-games in Twilight Princess, but I can't remember them off the top of my head.

As for the ones I highly dislike, I'd say (almost?) every single mini-game in Majora's Mask was annoying. >_>

I'd have to say Chocobo Racing from FF7.

...But that's only because it's the only one I've ever liked.

  • Some of the mini games from the Pokemon Stadiums are amazing. Delibird Delivery, Barrier Ball, and that Girafarig soccer one... are my faves.

Gamecube Animal Crossing's NES games. Balloon Fight and Wario's Woods!

  • Snowboarding, fishing and rollgoal from LOZ: Twilight Princess is all that comes to my mind right now. I spent hours fishing in Zelda...I'm not proud of that
Oh and the cat mini game in the Hidden Village, not sure if it counts though.

  • The Command Board from Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep comes to mind as a minigame that I spent an obscene amount of time with. It was a ridiculously creative and addictive way to level up commands and such to use in the actual gameplay, and I remember some of my characters getting pretty overpowered with some of the spoils of my Command Board escapades.

Just makes me want to play BBS HD even more, haha. Just have to clear Re:CoM HD so I can crack open 2.5.

  • I'm going with:

    1. Skystones/Skystones Smash from Skylanders Giants and Skylanders Trap Team respectively
    2. Digital Pinball in Theatre of Magic (Pinball Machine)

A lot of times, mini-games do wind up to be fun, at least from my perspective.

Of them all, one that stands out to me a lot would be from Super Mario 64 DS, in which we have a slingshot, and launch Mario from it (or was it some other character?) to collect points and earn scores. I've personally found this to be very addictive, and have wound up spending almost an hour under the game when I'd first played.

Aside from that, I was also pretty fond of the ones we have had in Sly 2: Band of Thieves. They were part of its story, if I remember right, and although I can't precisely recall as to how they were, I did enjoy having gone through them. If I were given the chance, I would definitely consider giving Sly 2 another run so I could play those mini-games again.

  • Practically every mini-game in the Jak & Daxter trilogy, from the pac-man like game to whack-a-mole-Metal-Heads version, they were pretty good! The only minigames that I really liked in the Ratchet & Clank games were the arena battles, and at that I don't even know if they could be called minigames. Anything that involved gadget puzzles annoyed me a lot.

I also liked playing Skystones in the Skylanders series, as well as taking on the AIs in Spyro 2: Season Of Flame and the AC series in a game of checkers.

  • I suppose I'll be the one to mention the Grand Theft Auto Series as a whole. Mini-Games, Sports Games, Digital Video Puzzle Games and the list rolls on. Hats off to Rockstar for putting mini-games in nearly all of their lead in titles. Anyone remember five finger fillet in Red Dead Redemption? Then there's drunk darts, and- - "NICO! COUSIN! DO YOU WANT TO GO BOWLING?"
