Yeah, practice is the best way to get better, although looking at online tutorials for image making programs (Like GIMP, which I use) also helps. :)

I don't even use GIMP or Photoshop, I actually use a program called Photofiltre. It's not known that much, so there really aren't any tutorials out there. xP

Oh! I've heard of Gimp before :O Is photofiltre similiar to photoshop or is it completly different?
