  • For those of you who do not know, Hayao Miyazaki is a famous Japanese manga artist, film director, co-founder of the animation studio and production company Studio Ghibli, and animator of many popular anime feature films including:

    Nausicaä
    Castle in the Sky
    My Neighbor Totoro
    Kiki's Delivery Service
    Porco Rosso
    Princess Mononoke
    Spirited Away
    Howl's Moving Castle
    Ponyo

So, if you have seen any of his films, which is your favorite? Why?

My favorite is Howl's Moving Castle. I think it's definitley his best work yet. Not only is the story and pictures amazing, the soundtrack is great too! I downloaded it onto my iPod! I definitley love the way he designed Howl too. Howl is super gorgeous! ;D

EDIT: Oops, sorry! Please move to Japanese Entertainment!

  • Spirited Away was a good one! It was the first of his movies I had seen. Princess Mononoke was very good but I couldn't stand seeing the limps coming off of peoples bodies...eww..

Kiki's Delivery Servie was alright. I don't really understand why so many people think it's REAL good. It has lots of good reviews, but I found it a little weird and the ending was a little boring for me.

Im actually gonna watch My Neighbor Totoro tonight! Hope it's as good as I hear it is!! :D

  • Oh how I do enjoy Miyazaki's films. The music is what gets to me in these movies, though the plots come really close.

I think the only one that I haven't seen in the list is Porco Rosso. I need to watch that soon.

  • Spirited Away is one of my favourite films of all time, so it's fair to say that Miyazaki is a personal fave of mine. With regards to his other efforts, I like Kiki's Delivery Service and Princess Mononoke an awful lot, and I admire My Neighbour Totoro and Ponyo for their technical qualities without really loving either of them. In recent years, his best effort has probably been writing the screenplay for Arrietty. Although he didn't direct it, you can feel his influence through it, elevating it above other recent Ghibli efforts such as Tales from Earthsea.

Miyazaki is undoubtedly amazing, as is Studio Ghibli itself. Though I think it's a bit of an injustice how people think of Ghibli and the only director they can name is Miyazaki.

Takahata has had great films as well. Grave of the Fireflies is a masterpiece; and Only Yesterday is really good as well. And his influence on Miyazaki is an important part of Ghibli.

One of my personal Ghibli favourites is Whisper of the Heart, directed by Yoshifumi Kondo. It's really sad to consider how he died after making the film, apparently due to working so hard. Again, it had an impact on Miyazaki; it's tragic and I really wish more people knew about it.

Mhmmm, it is sad, but I think people refer Studio Ghibli with Miyazaki because he made such a huge impact on the company as their best director.
I loved loved loved Whisper of the Heart, and it's one of my favorites from SG! That movie got me into John Denver, and now I can't stop singing his songs! "Country Roads...take me home..." That scene was very cute!
Someone else mentioned Tales from EarthSea. That was a great movie too, but I thought it couldve been better.
Hayao Miyazaki is definitley one of my favorite directors! I still havent seen Porco Rosso yet, but i'm kinda scared to. It looks weird. Did anybody else notice in Whisper of the Heart when Shizuku goes into Mr. Nishi's shop and they're talking about the clock, that the clock says 'Porco Rosso' on it? Is it supposed to be a relation or something?

  • I've only watched Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle, and I must say both are really good. Even though you kinda need to read the original book about Howl's Moving Castle to actually understand the plot...
