  • Hey, im not sure about you guys but I just found out on an 'energy saving search engine' known as Blackle... Its a search engine that... duh saves energy... I think its a good idea... heres some info about Blackle...

    How is Blackle saving energy?

Blackle was created by Heap Media to remind us all of the need to take small steps in our everyday lives to save energy. Blackle searches are powered by Google Custom Search.
Blackle saves energy because the screen is predominantly black. "Image displayed is primarily a function of the user's color settings and desktop graphics, as well as the color and size of open application windows; a given monitor requires more power to display a white (or light) screen than a black (or dark) screen." Roberson et al, 2002
In January 2007 a blog post titled Black Google Would Save 750 Megawatt-hours a Year proposed the theory that a black version of the Google search engine would save a fair bit of energy due to the popularity of the search engine. Since then there has been skepticism about the significance of the energy savings that can be achieved and the cost in terms of readability of black web pages.
We believe that there is value in the concept because even if the energy savings are small, they all add up. Secondly we feel that seeing Blackle every time we load our web browser reminds us that we need to keep taking small steps to save energy.

    How can you help?

We encourage you to set Blackle as your home page (click to set). This way every time you load your Internet browser you will save a little bit of energy. Remember every bit counts! You will also be reminded about the need to save energy each time you see the Blackle page load.
Help us spread the word about Blackle by telling your friends and family to set it as their home page. If you have a blog then give us a mention. Or put the following text in your email signature: "Blackle.com - Saving energy one search at a time".
Have a look at our energy saving tips page for ideas on steps you can take to save energy.
There are a lot of great web sites about saving energy and being more environmentally friendly. They are full of great tips covering the little things that we can all do to make a difference today. Try Blackling "energy saving tips" or visit one of the many great blogs dedicated to environmental awareness.

If this post counts as promoting, than Im promoting sumthin good. I hope you guys will start using this search engine coz it pretty much helps the enviroment... heres the url...

    Peace! ;)

This made me laugh so hard, I swear.

I wonder if the world has reached a new level of stupidity if people actually think that colors on a website require more energy. You would save more energy by keeping your monitor on the lowest light setting than this idea.

The general idea is probably old, as it would only help save power on CRT monitors where black pixels are simply turned off pixels.

    Pretty pointless nowadays.

As I heard, it's more than pointless as black on TFT actually requires more energy to display!

Power saving?... How exactly does saving power save the environment anyway? No matter how fast we do it, we're gonna burn all that oil, coal, gas and so forth sometime anyway. That said, renewable energy sources are on the increase, and don't produce pollution anyway.

Thus, I conclude, this site is redundant. Interesting find though, well done.

  • Dude... I don't get it. If anything, overusing your monitor will just wear it out.

Also, I don't really see how not using as much energy saves the environment: there is naturally energy running through the earth.
With that said, how in the world does one 'save' energy? It's a natural resource that is practically infinite.

True, but converting wind, tidal, solar, fossil energy into electricity requires either a lot of money or causes pollution. Pollution causes global warming and that...I do hope you know what that does.

This will work but not completely.
First of all it'll work only on old monitors where pixels are shutdown to look black.
All flat screen monitor will not turn off pixels or color cells and thus it is not completely useful.

To those who defy me in this.
    Spoiler:

So it won't save 100% power new monitors though it could save 10 - 20%.
