How does one make a dark map for a forest?

I am not talking about a circle around the player, but instead like an actual forest that is dark naturally. Take Viridian Forest for example, the tiles are not dark but the map is. Is there something I must do with layers and black tiles or what? Thanks for reading and hope you can help.

Make an parallel process event on the map that changes the screen tone. You are probably gonna need to mess around a little with it though. Also make sure that upon exiting the map it sets it to default again.

Alternatively you can just make a new tileset that is darker.
