Least favorite Pokemon game and why?

  • Back in dream world, I hated that berry game that scooped the ice cream or what ever.

Real game though, Pokemon TCG from Game Boy Color days. If I remember right, there were only a few good attacks which made certain cards rather OP. Jab or Slash or something like.

Dude the Pokemon TCG game for the GBC was awesome. It was a way you could actually play the card game without spending a fortune on the actual cards. The card game itself wasn't the most balanced at the time with Hitmonchan and Scyther (the Jab and Slash combo) being particularly overpowered, but the actual gameboy game itself was superb and ahead of it's time in a lot of ways through being able to trade and battle over link cable (some Yu-Gi-Oh games still come out today without multiplayer) as well as the game having great colourful sprite art. In fact I'd go as far as saying the sprites for the card art on that game were better than the pokemon sprites you'd see in Gold, Silver and Crystal at the time.

  • Pokemon Dash. What? You never said it should be one of the core games. P:

Jokes aside, I honestly can't think of which one is my least favorite out of the core games. Every generation has its own unique charms after all. Even if X and Y lacks in a lot of aspects, it still earns a spot in my heart thanks to the massive amount of Pokemon available in a single game (I did the math).

But er... I can just go with the "which games have I replayed the least" factor and say Pokemon DP. I have replayed all the other games at least once, and I think I didn't want to replay DP because it's rather bland imo. Platinum overall is much, much better than its other two versions.

Pokemon Diamond and Pearl felt really slow for some reason, especially surfing felt really awkward. Also it had 2 fire types until post-game, one of which was a starter which made it even worse. Flint, the supposed Fire-type specialist, turned out to be a joke because not even half of his Pokemon had the fire type.

I used to not like DPPt for mostly the same reasons you mentioned. The surfing is so slow I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed that. Also I felt like the encounter rate while surfing was extreme. The lack of fire types left me using Ponyta through almost every play through which got old fast. I honestly wondered why they even put a fire type specialist in the elite four when there were only two new non legendary fire Pokemon introduced that generation (ignoring rotom atm). At least in Platinum they seemed to have caught wind of how dumb his team lineup looked.

Also there was a huge level gap between the last gym leader and the elite four/champion. If I had a team of six Pokemon I would always end up at the Pokemon League with at the highest maybe level 42 Pokemon. The amount of grinding I had to do ruined any fun at the end.

At the time I wasn't a huge fan of these games, but having gone back and played them again there's something about them that just gives me that Pokemon feel that I lost in gen 5. I also thought they did a good job with a lot of the characters in this gen. Platinum did some justice to the things that really irked me.

  • I liked Diamond and Pearl for the time that they were released, mostly because they introduced new things like competitive battling and the physical/special split, and it was the first time the franchise's layout was taken to 3D. But now, when we have other games like Platinum, it's rather difficult to go back to them. Despite that, they were alright then, and my Pearl version has the longest save file of any Pokémon game i've owned, with over 440 hours.

I actually didn't like HG/SS at all. Gen 2 was my least favorite gen out of all 6 so far, but the originals were somewhat better, but not much. The fact that Gen 2 is pretty overrated made me hate it even more.

You can catch Rayquaza before the last gym in Emerald. After the cutscene in Sootopolis City, just go to the Sky Pillar and it will look all smashed up and Rayquaza is at the top. I guess many people would just go straight for the gym after finally getting to Sootopolis, but you can actually get Rayquaza to deal with Juan which probably isn't the worst idea if you started with Torchic.

  • With the region design, I think it's probably because it's a straight circle with 1 or 2 diverging points. Hoenn and Sinnoh were FAR better designed regions, and had a pretty cohesive theme. Unova is essentially the Nintendo version of Drangleic from Dark Souls 2 in terms of level design and cohesiveness - it looks alright at first glance, but when you study it more and more it falls apart into a series of levels with no interlocking design.

I never thought about it like that before but you could be right! :) I think I was just picturing the actual towns etc. themselves as opposed to thinking of routes but yes I think navigation was a big part of why I liked those regions :)
