  • What Mechanics in games, any game, new or old, make you want to drive your fist deep into the monitor/television or crush your handheld in your hands. Things that, when you're playing and a character says; "Here's what we're doing." And you're like; "Doesn't this type of mission have like... those mechanics?" The mission starts and your rage ensues. Anyone feel me?

Anything where you have to guard some sort of AI character and escort them through hordes of enemies is absolutely infuriating. Especially in older games like Jak and Daxter (Even though it's one of my favorite game series's of all time) where the AI was a bit lacking in the "I" department. I audibly groan whenever I find out I'm going to be stuck escorting some useless character through what always seems to be a war zone >.>

    Crash Bandicoot for GBA.

Those missions with Crunch, where you go round in a large hamster ball dodging Nitro Boxes.
I just URRRRRGH! I murdered me on the inside from how bad the concept was.

Defensive missions... They are just so... horrible, i just hate having to defend something... I wanna be offensive 24/7, not just walling in a place and hold off for a while

    I loved those missions personally.

I hate defending an AI who loves to run into either the enemies bullets or right where I am shooting.

  • Wave missions.

Like, missions that have huge numbers of AI enemies coming at you, and all you can do is shoot them...but they keep respawning! D:

Usually you find a way to move on, or you run out of ammo and die.

  • Escort missions, all the way.
Personally, I can handle guarding a castle/fort/whatever, BUT, when it comes to those damn AI protection missions I seriously want to kill them myself. Fus. Ro. Dah.

  • Escort Missions and Timed Missions infuriate me due to pressuring me to not screw up, or I'll have to do the whole mission all over again.

  • Double-attacks in Fire Emblem. Your choice of viable units to use is really limited in harder modes of some FE games 'cause a lot of classes have mediocre speed. Also archers not being able to attack adjacent units is upsetting because using them just slows you down - its a really boring mechanic and almost every game with archers gives them a dead-zone.

FE also has its share of annoying escort/defend missions. Theres nothing like protecting a Pegasus Knight who just LOVES to fly into enemy archers.

  • I know it's already been said buuuut escort missions. :P

Although that pales in comparison to the resource gathering in the Mass Effect series. While you could argue that MS1 used this mechanic to make the world feel big and interesting, the whole Mako tank driving part completely throws that out the window. It's the worst thing, I can't stand it and it is one of the biggest reasons why I don't want to replay that game. And then in MS2, they end up revamping the whole thing, making it not only a complete pace-breaker but also "mandatory"!

Another annoying thing about escorting is how many games have different walking speeds for the player character and NPC. As a result, the player has to walk, stop, walk, stop, and so on if they want to stay next to the NPC.

I'm not a fan of random quick time events during cutscenes, because I'm usually not at all prepared for them. I'm okay with games that consistently use quick time events for a good reason, but not when they're a random feature that was unnecessarily shoved in.

Also, I'm not sure if this counts, but I despise it when games require the player to grind, especially in turn-based JRPGs. Generally anything repetitive that involves going through the same exact thing doing the same actions over and over.

  • Timed missions: I get so paranoid about running out of time and having to do the mission over and over again before being able to reach the next checkpoint. >:(

    Quick-time button events: Aadsdfghlkj I can't press buttons within a half second ;A;

Find x number of items to progress or kill x wave of enemies to progress: Tediously repetitive

  • Already been mentioned tons of times, but perhaps that's a sign of just how annoying they are. Escort missions, and missions where you have to take care of someone in general. It's been a complaint that's been seen over so many games now, and it's often one of the biggest complaints I've heard about the old Nintendo classics. Star Fox and Goldeneye are both widely appreciated games, but both have parts in which you have to take care of others (I believe it's actually constant throughout Star Fox, since I always hear about how people hate Slippy ;p), and in Goldeneye it was during one of the hardest missions in the games, so yeah. Someone mentioned somewhere, that they found escort quests where you had to carry the escort much more tedious than when they follow you around, in reference to the Earth and Wind temple in LoZ Wind Waker (I believe I've mentioned this game in all of my posts in here today now xD), but I honestly much preferred that over having some bad AI following you around at an incredibly slow pace, getting stuck in walls, and just standing around getting shot at without heading for cover. Ellie from The Last of Us is a good example of some semi-bad AI, since she constantly kept swapping around covers, and she was generally just annoying iirc. Definitely not on scale with some other things we've seen before though :p

And fetch quests... There's nothing worse than having to traverse the entire world, or having to kill hundreds of enemies just to get certain items for a quest. I mean it's an easy concept to grasp, and might be a bit entertaining in the beginning, but it's a huge cop-out, since it's basically just there to prolong the experience, even if it might not be the most entertaining.
