[Question] Mewtwo raid solo strats?

  • The new tera 7-star raid was announced; Mewtwo with Psychic tera type. What is everyone planning to try for the raid?

Nintendo is pushing people to use Scizor and Hydreigon for attackers and Blissey for support, but I feel like Hydreigon will be a trap for anyone trying to solo since Mewtwo is likely going to have Aura Sphere from it's move list or even possibly Focus Blast will easily destroy a Dark-type.

I was trying to think what the raid would be like and I am wondering if it will have instant shields like Pikachu did, or protect its stats with Mist like Inteleon. I am also thinking they won't have the hidden ability Unnerve, but just the regular Pressure ability which will be harder for a raid.

Before battle / at shields: Mist or Future Sight / Calm Mind. Moves could be Psystrike (to counter special walls), Aura Sphere / Focus Blast, Ancient Power, Shadow Ball. Since they are pushing Blissey, though, Psystrike will probably just be Psychic which can reduce Special Defense anyways. Ancient Power would similarly be mean for people trying to use Bug-type Pokémon, but Scizor is neutral to Rock due to being part Steel-type, so that could be why they are pushing it.

With all those thoughts in mind, for my Mew raid I am going to try the following build:

    Mewtwo raid solo strats?

    Mew
    Nature: Modest (+SAtk, -Atk)
    Ability: Synchronize
    Tera: Bug
    Item: Light Clay
    - Pollen Puff / Bug Buzz
    - Struggle Bug
    - Light Screen
    - Leech Life / Life Dew

For team play I'll try a Scizor I guess.

    Mewtwo raid solo strats?

    Scizor
    Nature: Adamant (+Atk, -SAtk)
    Ability: Swarm
    Tera: Bug
    Item: Shell Bell
    - Sword's Dance
    - X-Scissor
    - Fury Cutter
    - Defog

Actually just thought of a Tinkaton build too.

    Mewtwo raid solo strats?

    Tinkaton
    Ability: Own Tempo
    Tera: Bug
    Item: Shell Bell
    - Sword's Dance
    - Skitter Smack
    - Tera Blast
    - Light Screen

Fought two different Mewtwos in Sword/Shield: physical and special. Would not be surprised to see a mixed Mewtwo.

Immediately favors Mew. Supposedly receives a stat bonus in the raid. Adapts well to whatever moveset Mewtwo ends up being. Figures something like:

    Mew :t151: (solo)
Nature: Modest (+Special Attack / -Attack)
    Tera: Dark
Moves: Nasty Plot, Acid Spray, Dark Pulse, and Eerie Impulse / Amnesia.
    Item: Shell Bell

    Some alternates:
    • Tera: Ghost with Shadow Ball. Works better if Mewtwo has a Fighting move. Doubts Shadow Ball or Dark Pulse on Mewtwo. Wants people to bring Mew.
    • Tera: Bug with Leech Life (and physically focused). Forgot about Leech Life until seeing it above. Provides excellent healing. Allows a different item than Shell Bell.
    • Struggle Bug or Snarl over Eerie Impulse / Amnesia. Depends on the Tera Shield and clears.
    • Mud-Slap. More desperation than anything. Knocks down physical and special moves alike, in a sense.

Foresees a tough battle for anyone besides Mew. Hits extremely hard with limited help from AI partners.

    Krookodile
Nature: Adamant (+Attack / -Special Attack)
    EVs: Hitpoints and Attack
    Ability: Intimidate
    Tera: Dark
Moves: Snarl, Bulk Up, Power Trip, and Rest/Mud-Slap
Item: Shell Bell / Bright Powder

Completely avoids dealing with Psystrike. Knocks down physical Fighting moves with Intimidate (and AI partners). Would not mind Focus Blasts. (Survives one from full health 7 times out of 8...assuming a neutral nature) Inevitably gets lucky and dodges some eventually. Twists the dagger with Mud-Slap. Hits for a solid 1426.6 - 1679.3% (~50% of its health) when fully set up and Terastallized. May not be a reliable strategy. Only needs to win once, though.

    Miraidon
Nature: Modest (+Special Attack / -Attack)
    EVs: Hitpoints and Special Attack
    Tera: Electric
Moves: Electro Drift/Parabolic Charge, Eerie Impulse, Metal Sound, and Calm Mind
Item: Shell Bell / Big Root

Outspeeds Mewtwo without investment. Lands a handy Eerie Impulse first. Reduces Psystrike and other special moves. Relies on AI partners to help on the physical side. Probably picks Parabolic Charge over Electro Drift because of PP. Might struggle to hit hard enough, though.

Considers Galarian Moltres, Arceus, Scizor, and Gholdengo too.

If you are going Dark tera, wouldn't Snarl be better than Eerie Impulse? Slam Snarl the first three turns and then tera right away?

Leans towards no...sometimes, anyways. Drops incoming damage faster with Eerie Impulse. Loses some damage (and Shell Bell healing) by not going Snarl, certainly. Will spend a lot of time setting up with very little healing, though. Prioritizes the damage reduction. Builds Tera Orb charges with Acid Spray, also.

Predicts Tera: Dark to be a terrible type to sit in. Gave Mewtwo a Fighting move in both Sword/Shield sets. Admittedly makes Tera: Dark a pretty questionable choice, upon reflection. Mainly fears a debuff clear while Terastallized. Hits pretty hard with Psystrike, if unresisted. A quick damage calculation:
Mew (while Tera: Bug with 252 HP EVs) versus base Mewtwo
    - Psystrike: 51.9 - 61.3%
    - Flamethrower: 47 - 55.4%

Could see Snarl being good with an instant Tera shield OR a debuff clear with the shield up.
    _________

Mentions this for fun. Wrote the first post. Decided to grab a second Mew in Scarlet/Violet afterwards. Turned out to be Tera: Bug and Adamant. Covers that base.
I think Calyrex-Shadow might be really good against Mewtwo, maybe even better than Mew. Type advantage + Astral Barrage + Tera: Ghost = cheese strat?

Good point. Bets on that typing doing well while setting up. Delivers pretty strong damage even without a Special Defense debuff.

Sees no means to beat this raid solo. Gave Mewtwo Calm Mind to use any time. Zipped up to +5 Special Attack/Special Defense at the end of turn 2. (Oh, and also full Defense/Special Defense Effort Values. Totally needed those.)

Best attempt: Brought it to 75% health. Buffed up all the way with Iron Defense, Amnesia, and Swords Dance. Lucked into a full health Heal Cheer. Outhealed Psystrike. Aaaand then a buff clear. One-shot from full health. Might have run out of Leech Lifes by the end anyways. (Ended at 8/16.)

Mewtwo's moves: Calm Mind, Ice Beam, Psystrike, and Aura Sphere.

Tried Mud-Slap + Substitute. Slaps you down at the debuff clear. (Useful note: Calculates Substitute using your base hitpoints, not your raid-inflated stats.) Hits pretty hard with Aura Sphere, if it uses it. (Favors Psystrike, even at bad accuracies.)

Doubts other Pokemon will fare better. Could pick someone like Spiritomb to be immune to everything but Ice Beam. Obliterates it with Ice Beam still.

Edit: Remembered Calyrex from above. Thought about it. Stacks Special Defense out the wazoo. Never mind.

Edit2: Wait, hold on. Did not look closely enough at the Mewtwo. Thought someone was joking with the Chesto Berry / Rest combination. What? Yeah, no. Literally impossible solo. Cannot output enough damage.

Edit3: Mathed this out with Mew.
    Assumptions:
    • Always rolled max damage.
    • Always criticaled.
    • 16 Leech Lifes. No Leppa Berry.
    • No Defense drops or Attack Cheers. +6 Attack for Mew.
    • Neutral nature Mewtwo. (Is not certain what it has.) 252 EVs in Defense for Mewtwo. Max Attack, Tera: Bug Mew.
    • Unlimited time.
    • Largely ignored your teammates. (Do you expect them to live a hit?)

Gave Mewtwo a x50 health multiplier. (Handed the others x30 and x35, for the record.)

Not Terastallized with Tera Shield up:
    (305.9 * .2) * 3 = 183.54% damage

    Terastallized with Tera Shield up:
    (458.9 * .7) * 7 = 2248.61% damage

Adds up to 2432.15% damage. Calls that close enough to break the Tera Shield. (Do your allies hit for about two-thirds of Mewtwo's base health? No clue.) Proceeds to Rest to full.

    Terastallized with Tera Shield down:
    458.9 * 6 = 2753.6% damage.

Brought it back down to below half health again...barely.

So, in short, to win this raid solo: Always crit. Always roll max damage. Prevent Rest (through paralysis or having a terrain). Will defeat Mewtwo on your last Leech Life, maybe second-to-last with decent partners.

  • My worst fears were realized. Mewtwo has the physical-hitting Psystrike and Aura Sphere (so not going Dark was a good call). The instant-shield and Calm Mind set up were also something that came to pass.

Kind of lame that they want you to take Chansey and Hydreigon for non-Mew raids, but those get easily bodied by Psystrike and Ice Beam.

  • It's the hardest raid so far, this build (and 3 other competent players) is strongly recommended.

    Mew @ Metronome
    Ability: Synchronize
    Tera Type: Bug
    EVs: 252 HP / 196 Atk / 4 Def / 4 SpD / 52 Spe
    Adamant Nature
    - Life Dew
    - Struggle Bug
    - Swords Dance
    - Leech Life

I've used something very close to. My item was leftovers, same Tera type, leech life, light screen, crunch, and struggle bug. Since Mewtwo keeps adding special status, I've only used physical moves. And only raided when everyone was using Mew. Every other one died in one hit.

  • There was a solo build that dropped finally. A Poketuber named Blaines shared a video with the how-to. Seems like a lot of RNG, almost easier to just find a team to play with.
