There are so many Drakengard moments I could use here for this; pretty much every ending except the one that leads into the second game (I refuse to think of that as canon) has at least one moment in it. Furiae coming back wrong was pretty horrific the first time I saw it; the scream really set my nerves on edge. The Grotesqueries descending from the sky gave me all sorts of dread...giant babies with TEETH. What the hell, Cavia. It only gets worse from there. The music is a complete mess, which only adds to it. I was pretty tense for most of the end of the game. Manah's creepy voice freaked me out, as did Arioch's laugh. That game is just messed up beyond belief.

I was actually quite scared when I had to fight Seymour for the first time in Final Fantasy X, as well. But that was only because of the cutscene that had him summoning Anima beforehand, and I just KNEW he was going to summon it. My fear dissipated pretty quickly when I nullified his magic with Nul spells and demolished Anima with Shiva, though. But I was dreading that battle after watching Anima wipe the floor in spectacular fashion with the fiends that invaded Luca.

  • The jumpscare in Bioshock Infinite. It's well done in that there's only one in the entire game, and of the Bioshock games, Infinite is the brightest and makes it the rather unexpected. I guess "scare" isn't the right word since it didn't scare me exactly, it did make me jump and release an audible yell of surprise. Kudos to Irrational on that one.

Are you talking about that level with the Boys of Silence, because those characters really creeped me out when I was playing it.

    In non-horror games? That's a toughie, lol.

There have been a fair amount of times that strategy games scared me. Though it usually starts with, "X has declared war!" when they're near my capital, and my troops aren't. :P

Also going out on the island with other people in Animal Crossing: New Leaf, but that's more because social anxiety.

I was initially going to ask you where the hell the jump-scare was, lol, but then Matt brought up the Boys of Silence...

As a kid, this literally gave me nightmares for quite a while...until I grew out of it.

Giygas really wasn't that scary. He was insanely disturbing yeah, but not that scary.

That or all the horror games have desensitized me.

But I'd have to go with that one moment from Super Mario 64 in Big Boo's haunt. You know, you walk into that room, see the piano, and then

    Yeah.

That was really unexpected and caught me off guard.

Thank you for reminding me of frightening eels, Spinosaurus. :P

Collecting the Zora eggs in Majora's Mask was the most terrifying thing that 10-year-old me ever had to do in a game.

Aquaphobia aside - and god do I hate water levels - these things were horrifying.

  • The spiders are single-handedly the reason I don't play Minecraft on Survival; just looking at them makes me cringe Similarly, getting attacked by tarantulas in Animal Crossing: Wild World and City Folk have given me bad jumpscares.

There was one thing that was a little disturbing when I first saw it: Disgaea 2's "Worst Ending", with the Japanese audio on. It has to be the Japanese audio because the English audio cuts out some of the sounds. It's also kinda big spoilers for the game btw, but....

So basically what happens is that
    Spoiler:

    Then what happens is: https://youtu.be/02XfTf874YY?t=5m

That should take you to the right part in the video if you give it a sec to load (for whatever reason the only video with the Japanese audio includes the credits).

That one Bodybuilder trainer in Pokemon Colosseum. Y'know that last arena area before the final boss? You get all the keys from the Cipher guys and enter the casino and then all of a sudden BOOM! you get a jump scare from the Bodybuilder charging at you from the door.

  • I'm really averse to horror and being startled (jump scares, no thanks), so I avoid horror games like the plague. The creepiest thing in a non-horror game that really sticks out to me is the pirate lab in Phendrana in Metroid Prime. After you get the Thermal Visor and the power cuts off, and you have pirates coming at you from all over the place as you make your way back through the lab to get outside. I'm not sure if it was so much scary as it was tense, but I definitely remember being on edge throughout the whole thing.

The Valhalla in Metroid Prime 3 was also creepy. And Ravenholm in Half-Life 2...although I'd seen vids of it by the time I'd played it so it didn't quite scare me as much as it does other people.

Whenever the game goes into the silent realm and you're stupid enough to slip into a waking water and that music plays, these things pop up out of nowhere to chase your ass. Makes Pyramid Head look like a puppy. Another great example would be whenever an unexpected enemy pops up in Deus Ex, it could make your entire playthrough null and void if you're trying something new.

  • The Baaj temple in FFX was enough to scare the shit out of me. I'm not sure why, but I just get this vibe about it that creeps me out. The statue that pops up when you first enter the main hall of the ruins doesn't really help the vibe either. I'd find a picture, but there aren't any of them online to show what it is.
