I'm still on Pay As You Go with a crappy old phone...I don't really need a smartphone. Although I'd like one. Maybe if/when I'm able to work at least 25 hours a week I'll be able to justify the expense...

It's a mixture of both, more or less.

You certainly don't want to drop something like the iPhone X, regardless of what Apple says about how durable the screen is.
