    I've noticed when you connect online some players Icons are of different characters like gym leaders and elite four members. Others such as my own are icons of my characters avatar, is there a way to change it or do you have to unlock them?

    You don't unlock them, they're there from the start. Just go on your profile, then tap your name and then public icon. When you tap the public icon you should see a range of other icons.
