    I remember looking on a site somewhere a while back, and it showed that some Pok?mon had different names before the had the names the have now.

    i.e. Rattata was Rattatak

    I think this is extremely interesting, if anyone could just list the original names here, it would be of use.

    I know Abra was originally called "Hocus" and Kadabra "Pocus". I'm not sure if that helps, but it's the only two I know ^^;

    Vulpix used to be Foxfire (yep, reverse it and you've got 80 million users :) ), and Clefairy used to be Aria, and Clefable used to be Ariala.

    Wow... I had no idea they thought so much about the names. XD Maybe they tested the names on a variety of kids to see which ones they liked best. Then again, maybe they just drew straws.

    Was the name "Pikablu" something fan-made, or a real possiblilty? I can never get a straight answer on that.

    I would assume they would come up with a plethora of names for each Pok?mon during the localization process in English-speaking (or any other language) countries. The catchiest name, or the one most befitting of the Pok?mon, would be the finalized version that we see on all the merchandise today. Only makes sense some of the names would leak through the cracks into public domain, and it makes for interesting conversation, too.

    I don't have a definite answer, only an educated guess. I would say it was fanmade, as there seems to be no basis to the name "Pikablu" otherwise. The term "pika" is derived from pika pika suru, a Japanese verb with the basic meaning of "to sparkle." That's why it works for Pikachu...you know, electricity, sparkles...you get the general idea. Anyway, that doesn't work for Marill, which was tentatively named Pikablu in the English fan-community before G/S were officially released, correct? ^_^; The only thing tying the name to the Pok?mon is the blue part, the way I see it. Otherwise, it doesn't make much sense. :o

    I thought that Chikorita was Leef/Leaf in the Gold/Silver trial version.
    And Smeargle was Painter or something...

    There are more, but they are names of Pokemon's who whern't used.
