    Background

It was twenty years ago when Scott had his dream. A dream of a beautiful empire, ruled by only the most powerful of trainers. Scott lived in Slateport for his whole life. Living on the ocean always made him wonder what was out there. However, he never had enough money to venture out. So, he became a Pokemon trainer instead, and challenged the Pokemon League. He was a revered trainer after a long journey with his Pokemon. He was ready to challenge the Elite Four themselves, but he disappeared one day...

    The Story

Hoenn is a land of tropical weather and heavy mythology. The legends state that Pokemon created this land entirely. People created the gyms and Pokemon league of today. It is typical for a trainer, ranging anywhere from ten years old or older, to begin a journey with a faithful Pokemon. Becoming the champion is the ultimate goal of trainers, which they obtain status of by defeating the eight known gyms that are spread across the region. But, unknown to most trainers, there is an organization that is open only to those elite of the elite. The trainers that are invited to this organization not only have the most powerful Pokemon in the land, but their natural skills are also toned to the extreme. This organization is known as the TSF. This acronym is unknown to all except those who conquer this organization. Trainers that are invited by this organization are pitted against their surroundings in rigorous tests of seven categories; Ability, Spirit, Knowledge, Bravery, Tactics, Guts, and Luck. There have been many incidents where a trainer has not returned from a challenge.

The chosen people this year are to stay in a hotel in the center of the organization's land, known as the Hoenn Battle Frontier. They will each have to challenge several harrowing tests in the duration of their stay. One hundred trainers have been admitted to this frontier. Out of these, only one will be offered the position in a spot of the TSF. Good luck to the trainers, and their Pokemon.

    Name: Marnie Walters
    Gender: Girlie
    Age: 16 years old

Appearance: Marnie has quite the awkward body structure. Her legs seem to go on for miles, but they are extremely thin... just like the rest of her body.

She has quite the tomboyish style. She keeps her wavy auburn hair tied back into a low pony tail. An old baseball cap rests on the top of her head. Marni's wardrobe mainly consists of old torn up jeans and over sized t-shirts. Some people say that Marnie could be gorgeous if she dressed herself better.

Marnie has an unusually pretty face, she has high cheek bones and large green eyes. Tiny brown freckles cover her nose and cheeks, some say they are very cute but that is one of Marnie's biggest insecurities.

    Personality:

Marnie has a very laid back attitude. She doesn't like to be the center of attention unless she is in a battle. Even though Marnie is laid back, she can become very competitive at times... which tends to make her a sore loser. But, Marnie constantly trains so she won't lose.

A lot of people think Marnie has an eating disorder because of her thin body, the truth is Marnie loves food! She eats all the time! Her biggest weakness.... a nice, big juicy hamburger.

History: Marnie was raised in Pallet Town by her single mom Meredith Walters. Meredith wasn't exactly the best mother in the word, so Marnie pretty much raised herself.

At the age of ten, Marnie went to Professor Oak to receive her first Pokemon. There, she picked out a Charmander. The Charmander, who she named Ares, eventually became a Charizard and became Marnie's powerhouse of her team. Everyday Marnie trained Ares, which resulted into a tight bond between the two. Marnie eventually captured other pokemon to add to her team, and the team beat every gym in the Kanto and Johto region.

Instead of going to the Hoenn region, Marnie decided to start her own "Pokemon Training Services" where she would help train difficult pokemon. Marnie decided that training wasn't her forte, so she began her Journey in the Hoenn region.

When Marnie was on her way to the Hoenn region, she received a mysterious call from someone. They said that they had seen her battles and that she was accepted into the Final Frontier. Shocked, but flattered, Marnie decided that the Final Frontier would be a great experience for her and Her Pokemon.

    POKEMON TEAM:

    Pinnacle of the Final Frontier

    Species: Charizard
    Nickname: Ares

Appearance: Ares is very large with a muscular body due to all the training. Other than that he looks like your regular Charizard. :3

Personality: Ares is a very loyal companion and teammate. He is just like his master... competitive. He loves to win and enjoys beating other Pokemon.

History: Ares is Marnie's very first Pokemon. Marnie chose him out of the 3 starter pokemon. They trained together everyday, which resulted in Ares evolving quickly. The two practically took over Kanto together, beating most of the gyms in record time.

Moveset: Flamethrower, Earthquake, Scary Face, Slash

    Pinnacle of the Final Frontier

    Species: Dewgong
    Nickname: Athena

Appearance: Athena has very large blue eyes, which is incredibly rare for a Dewgong.

Personality: Sweet yet powerful. Athena is like the mother of the team. She is very protective of her "children" in and out of battles.

History: Marnie was in a pokemon center when she overheard a boy talking about how much he wanted a Ponyta. Coincidentally, Marnie had just caught a week Ponyta that day. Already having a fire type on her team Marnie went up to the boy and told him she would trade the Ponyta for one of his Pokemon. The boy offered a seel and Marnie agreed. Athena was a very intelligent seel and was a decent battler. It wasn't long till Athena evolved into an elegant Dewgong.

Moveset: Ice beam, Double team, Blizzard, headbutt

    Pinnacle of the Final Frontier
    Species: Sunflora
    Nickname: Larry
Appearance: Larry's petals are a lot brighter then the regular Sunflora' s. Larry is also a bit overweight.

Personality: Larry is the jokester of the group. He is always pulling pranks on the other Pokemon. He would rather have fun then battle... he thinks battling is too much work.

Larry is pretty much the definition of Lazy and Nonathletic. He can only battle for so long before having to take a breather.

History: Larry is the only Pokemon Marnie caught in the Johto region. He was the only one that interested her. Marnie started off with hardcore training with him, but she soon realized that no matter how much training she could do he would stay nonathletic. His personality is the only reason Marnie still keeps him around.

Moveset: Mega Drain, Leaf Storm, Bullet Seed, Protect.

Others: Marnie prefers not to battle Larry.

    Pinnacle of the Final Frontier

    Species: Eevee
    Nickname: Chaos
Appearance: Chaos was in a battle with a growlithe when SHE got the tip of her left ear torn off. Other then that, she looks like your regular cute Eevee. :)

Personality: Chaos's name describes her perfectly. She is always causing trouble. Whether its knocking over trash cans or stealing people's valuables she is always in to something.

History: Chaos was the last Pokemon Marnie ever trained... she was also the most difficult. She was very vicious and mean, but somehow Marnie calmed her down. Marnie waited and waited for Chaos's owner to show up... but he never did. So she decided to take Chaos under her wing and keep her as part of the team.

    Name: Kaylin Maher
    Gender: Male
    Age: 19
    Appearance: Design Sketch
Standing at 5'10" and weighing 145lbs, Kaylin does not have a particularly notable build. He enjoys exercising and is physically strong--as most who playfight with a Gyarados would be. As a consequence of his work, the male has faint scars over most of his body. The most obvious scar, a bite mark from his first meeting with Darcy, he keeps hidden under the left sleeve of his light jacket. Blonde hair, slightly wavy with a choppy cut, covers the top of his head. A few dark blue streaks can be seen among his otherwise pale locks sitting against faintly paler skin. His eyes, clear and piercing, shine a light greyish blue. Over a dark grey shirt he wears a red and white plaid jacket with a white hood, the right sleeve of which is usually partially slid up. His jeans, fastened with a brown belt, are a deep navy. For shoes he prefers a pair of brown hiking boots. About his neck he wears a short, woven necklace with a single bead in the center.
Personality: Confident and friendly, Kaylin is warm toward others but rarely makes deep or lasting relationships due to the frequency of his travel and his dislike of feeling tied down. As one who routinely deals with difficult Pokemon, he is able to remain level-headed in high pressure situations. When crises occur, Kaylin's natural tendency is to assume a leadership role. If he believes himself right he may be headstrong, but he knows when to stop trying to convince others and either acquiesce or act alone. Even during battle, the trainer maintains a comforting, soothing aura about him that keeps his Pokemon and (at times) allies calm.
People tend to assume Kaylin's ability to calm Pokemon stems from his own steady personality. While this is partially true, his connection with violent Pokemon is likely due to his ability to identify with dark impulses. Growing up in an environment in which self-expression was frowned upon, Kaylin suppressed his own negative emotions and tendencies to an unnatural degree. Already an unusual child, a considerable amount of anger and violent desires built up over the years. Though he determined he would be different from those who were in his life when he was a child, he knew he had reached a point at which expressing all his emotions would be dangerous. Finding himself facing his inner demons daily, he can empathize with others when they do the same.
To Kaylin, the experience of life is more important than his own well-being or pride. While not reckless, he can be rather casual in regard to certain risks. Almost constantly healing from a work or training-related incident, pain does not bother him much anymore.
History: The strongest memory Kaylin has of his childhood is the cold. His home was located in a pleasantly temperate region, and his house's climate control functioned well. Yet everywhere he went and everyone he talked to seemed somehow cold . . . cold and boring. His family was upper middle class and therefore fairly wealthy. His parents were hardworking, polite, and distant. Even now Kaylin is unsure how well he truly knows them, but whenever he visits he is respectfully polite and distant in return. Growing up with a girl's name, Kaylin was often teased by his classmates. For a couple years this hurt him; then he grew bored of that too--which was worse. When he was eight, Kaylin decided he no longer wanted to be cold and bored and ran away from home. During this escapade he met a Deino, who he injured and by whom he was injured badly enough for him to decide they ought to go back to his home. Though his parents were concerned about his wounds, they allowed him to keep the Deino to which he now seemed attached. Kaylin and Darcy healed together, then once healed began to explore together. Through meeting Darcy and their adventures, Kaylin discovered a peculiar aspect of himself. He found he had a calming aura about him to which Pokemon would respond given time and proximity. Even Pokemon that were previously hostile toward him could be quieted. Unfortunately this effect did not always show itself soon enough to prevent injury, but Darcy protected Kaylin from anything life-threatening.

Having tasted a world warmer and more interesting, Kaylin decided to set out as Pokemon trainer once he was ten. His parents were, as was their way, politely supportive. For awhile, Kaylin had little inclination toward Pokemon gyms and competitions. Instead he simply wanted to travel, to learn, to meet--to breathe freedom and taste life. After obtaining a Gyarados he named Finbar, Kaylin began to call himself a "Pokemon Tamer" and helped people with problem Pokemon as he traveled. Battle became integral to his work, and eventually he decided to try challenging Pokemon gyms. Currently Kaylin has badges from Unova, Kanto, and Hoenn, though he lacks a complete set from any region. He has also won several tournaments and placed in more. Recently Kaylin received an invitation to participate in an event hosted by a group referring to itself as "TSF." Despite some misgivings, he accepted.

Others: Kaylin specializes in training savage, wild, and generally difficult Pokemon. Having heard whispers during his travels of a violent Pokemon named "Giratina", he hopes to one day meet it.

    Species: Hydreigon
    Nickname: Darcy
Appearance: A large scar runs down the center of Darcy's face.
Personality: Of all Kaylin's Pokemon, Darcy is the one with the most self-control. Despite the satisfaction he draws from battle and destruction, he has been with Kaylin long enough to adopt some of the human's mindset for himself. Often the two operate as partners, understanding the other's thoughts and desires without a word being spoken. To this day Kaylin bears a scar on his forearm from the dark type's bite, and Darcy similarly retains a scar from the boy's attack. When one of them is in some form of pain or danger, his partner's scar aches.

Due to his efforts to keep his power and natural tendencies in check, Darcy tends to be quiet when someone aside from his teammates is nearby--the exception to this being battle of course. When he fights seriously, Darcy becomes extremely determined. Collateral damage and self injury become inconsequential so long as he defeats his opponent. In the less common event of a multi battle, Darcy is more poised in order to synchronize more effectively with whatever Pokemon he is working with. Whether as a result of precedence, power, or personality, all of Kaylin's Pokemon have a healthy respect for Darcy.
History: Kaylin met Darcy, his first Pokemon, when he was eight. After running away from home, Kaylin fell asleep in a dark cave. Before long, however, he was awakened by the sound of something crashing about. In the dimness Kaylin saw a Deino charging toward him. The creature easily bowled the child over and, intrigued by this new object, began to bite at it. As Kaylin tried to push the wild Pokemon away it grew more forceful, finally clamping its jaws down on his left forearm and refusing to loosen its hold. First the boy was overwhelmed by terror and pain; then he grew angry. Searching the ground where he had fallen, he found a sharp rock. And in a flash of rage, he gouged a deep gash into the Deino's face. The Deino released him as it cried out. Instantly Kaylin was filled with remorse. Inspecting the wild Pokemon's wounds as well as his own, he decided they should seek help. By the time they reached Kaylin's house, the Deino had settled down and become fairly docile. Over the next week Kaylin helped the local Nurse Joy treat the dragon type. Within the first few days, the Deino began to respond to Kaylin's presence regularly with a quieter manner. At the end of the week he was nudging Kaylin instead of charging toward him, and his bites had grown gentle. Since the Pokemon now seemed manageable, Kaylin's parents allowed the boy to keep him. He named him Darcy.

A couple years after Kaylin began journeying and soon after he caught Angel, Darcy evolved to his second stage. Food bills were high the next few months due to the Zweilous' newly acquired eating habits. Then, during a battle against Winona, Darcy evolved once more into a Hydreigon. Having grown larger and considerably more powerful, Darcy is no longer kept outside his Pokeball in public as often as he once was. Nonetheless, he and his trainer remain close.
Moveset: Dark Pulse, Flamethrower, Dragon Pulse, U-Turn
    Others: N/A

    Species: Gyarados
    Nickname: Finbar
Appearance: Finbar's facial crest is slightly darker than that of the average Gyarados.
Personality: As a Gyarados, Finbar has a strong tendency toward violence. When met with a problem that lacks another obvious solution, physical force seems a natural choice to him. Even if he is not particularly innovative, he learns readily enough. And his "solve a problem by increasing levels of violence" policy has been helpful in past battles. Though he tends to be wary of strangers, he is rather attached to Kaylin--almost unusually so. At times he will emerge from his Pokeball at night to sleep circled about his trainer. When Kaylin is nearby, Finbar can control his anger well enough to channel it at a specific opponent or opponents. If separated from him, chaos is likely to ensue.
History: When Kaylin met Finbar he was newly evolved, nameless, and consumed by fury. Upon arriving at a small town, Kaylin found many of its residents panicking and several buildings reduced to rubble. Naturally he concluded that some trouble was occurring. Following the trail of destruction, the trainer found a Gyarados thrashing about the remains of a riverside house. Though he suspected Darcy would have some difficulty defeating a Gyarados in this state, he hoped to at least subdue it. The beginning of the battle progressed poorly, resulting in two more collapsed buildings and the formation of a new stream. But Darcy was determined as usual, and eventually he pinned down the protesting Gyarados long enough for Kaylin to draw near it. Laying a hand on the side of the water serpent's head, Kaylin spoke calmly to it until it stopped roaring. After a few minutes, the Gyarados was quieted enough to not resist capture.

In the days that followed, Kaylin worked to develop a lasting bond with Finbar. As he treated the Gyarados' wounds, he noticed several that made him suspect an attack against the Pokemon had triggered his rampage. The physical injuries healed easily enough, but psychological damage of an unknown origin proved more difficult to deal with. Sensitive to changes in his environment, Finbar was prone to unease; and as with most of his species, he responded to unease by becoming violent. Eventually Kaylin tamed the Gyarados enough times and endured enough battles with him to gain his trust. For years now Finbar has been a dependable member of Kaylin's team.
Moveset: Waterfall, Stone Edge, Ice Fang, Dragon Dance
    Others: N/A

    Species: Chandelure
    Nickname: Angel
Appearance: Aside from unusually pale flames, Angel's appearance is typical of her species.
Personality: Angel is clever, greedy, vengeful, and malicious--in short, demonic. Though she has too much regard for Kaylin to act against his direct orders, she maintains the same desire to cause and witness pain she had while still wild. At times the Chandelure's temper flares (both figurative and literal) have caused problems, as has her habit of holding grudges. Fortunately years of training have made her bursts of anger less frequent, allowing her to utilize her craftiness more effectively.
History: While exploring an abandoned mansion with Darcy, Kaylin noticed a flickering light in one of the rooms. Upon entering, the pair saw a candle sitting in the center of a table. Curious yet wary, Kaylin began to inspect the room for signs of another presence. Before long, he began to notice both he and Darcy were growing weak. Unsure who or where the enemy was, the trainer returned his Pokemon to its Pokeball as a precaution. Angry at the loss of one of her prey, the Litwick sitting on the table suddenly flared. Unable to use Finbar in such limited space and with Darcy too weak to fight, Kaylin narrowly escaped--the ghost Pokemon's fire following him to the mansion entrance. After a day of rest, Kaylin and Darcy returned to the mansion. Though they initially saw no sign of their enemy, Kaylin noticed a nearby wall was unusually warm. His partner swiftly crashed through the wall and into the hiding Litwick. Darcy fired off a few quick-hitting attacks, ending the fight before his or his trainer's soul could be devoured.

Shortly after he began to familiarize himself with his newly-caught Litwick, Kaylin facetiously began to refer to her as "Angel." While Darcy and Finbar desired battle and destruction or merely raged for the sake of raging, Angel was a sadist. Fortunately Kaylin's nature and the relationship he developed with the Litwick have been enough to keep her scheming in check. Though she would no longer harm Kaylin nor any of his Pokemon, anyone she views as an enemy she considers fair game.

After nearly a year of traveling with Kaylin, Angel evolved into a Lampent during a battle against a wild Pokemon. Several months later, the night before a difficult tournament she "mysteriously" evolved once more into a Chandelure. To this day Angel maintains that the event was a miracle, though Kaylin strongly suspects she stole a Dusk Stone from someone to help him in battle.
Moveset: Flame Burst, Shadow Ball, Clear Smog, Energy Ball
    Others: N/A

    Species: Zebstrika
    Nickname: Sorcha
Appearance: Sorcha's eyes and inner ears are yellow rather than blue.
Personality: Proud, fierce, and wild, Sorcha does not suffer foolishness well. Though his temper is naturally short, his fighting skills and Kaylin's guidance are usually enough to prevent him from doing something foolish himself. While willing to respect Kaylin's other Pokemon as equals, he is reluctant to bend his will to any of them except, perhaps, Darcy. Sorcha has a particular dislike of having his tail touched.
History: When he was sixteen, Kaylin was called to a small town to manage a pair of wild Venipede causing problems in the nearby forest. Once he subdued the bug Pokemon and returned to town, the tamer noticed a boy having trouble with his Blitzle. As it grew closer to evolution, the Pokemon had become increasingly difficult to manage. Foreseeing a possible problem, Kaylin offered to take the Blitzle from him and help him catch a different, more docile Pokemon. Though a bit reluctant, the boy agreed it was better for him and his Pokemon.

At the beginning, Sorcha was hostile toward Kaylin. Already wild, he did not respond kindly to the transfer in ownership. Kaylin patiently calmed the Blitzle as often as needed, training him daily until he gained the electric type's trust. By the time Sorcha evolved a month later, their relationship was solid enough for the trainer to provide a balance for the Zebstrika's newly clipped fuse. Since then Pokemon and tamer have grown closer, even if Sorcha remains undemonstrative.

Well, I can reserve you three. And with that, sign ups are closed (there are eight, but since Kogenta is playing as a Frontier Brain, and is sure to get it, there are seven...).

I'm hoping to start this by Monday, or earlier if all sign ups are completed. PM/VM me if you have an issue with this.

Also, if you roleplayers could post when you're done with your sign ups, that'd be great.

EDIT: And, there's an OOC thread now! Here.

The scent of seawater and the cries of Wingulls filled the air, carried to Kaylin Maher on a soft ocean breeze. Leaning on the railing of the S. S. Fiona, Kaylin watched quietly as the Battle Frontier drew ever closer. The trainer closed his eyes and drew in a deep breath, savoring the fresh air. Almost there. Then we'll see what challenges this TSF has prepared for us. A bell rang out, signaling an announcement and causing the chatter on deck to fade to silence. Kaylin opened his eyes and turned toward the nearest speaker.

"Attention trainers. We will be arriving at the Battle Frontier shortly. Please gather all your belongings and exit the ship in an orderly fashion after we have docked. Once on shore, proceed to the Registration Hall, which you will find down the dock to your left. There you will be given further instructions."

Kaylin shouldered a one-strap backpack that had been sitting by his feet. Automatically he brushed his fingertips over the Pokeballs at his side. One, two, three, four. All there. Adjusting his backpack slightly, the tamer joined the crowd gathering near the area that would host the boat's exit ramp. A few minutes later, the ship rumbled slightly as it came to a halt at the Battle Frontier dock.

    ------------------

As he made his way toward the Registration Hall, Kaylin looked up at the massive buildings dotted about the area. It was not quite what he had been expecting . . . but what exactly had he been expecting anyway? The information TSF had granted him was limited, as though they had been wary of outsiders learning too much. Or perhaps they simply expected that no one would want to read twenty pages of size eight font detailing something that could be experienced for oneself. Kaylin stepped through the Registration Hall's automatic double doors and glanced about. Lines of trainers had already formed in front of desks behind which politely smiling workers in uniforms stood. Appropriate procedure seemed self-evident. Kaylin attached himself to the end of the shortest line he saw. Before long, the male reached the desk, indicating the efficiency of the staff at the Frontier.

"Name, invitation, and Trainer ID please," the woman before Kaylin said as he stepped forward.

Reaching into his pocket, the tamer dug out his wallet, replying, "My name is Kaylin Maher, last name M-A-H-E-R. And . . ." He placed a card and a piece of paper flat on the counter. "ID and invitation."

After briefly checking both objects and comparing them with her computer screen, the woman handed Kaylin another card. "This is your Battle Pass. It will allow participation in the appropriate events as well as record victory, defeat, and Battle Points. Any questions?"

The trainer turned the pass over a few times, inspecting it thoughtfully. "Nope."

"Then please proceed to battle room 27. There you will be matched with an opponent for a placement battle."

They don't waste any time, do they? Returning his invitation and ID to his wallet along with his new Battle Pass, Kaylin smiled. "Thanks. Have a good day." He turned and walked away.

Since the building he was currently in appeared to actually be a literal hall--albeit a wide one--Kaylin decided the battle rooms were likely somewhere else. Exiting through the doors at the hall's far end, the youth followed a stream of trainers that appeared confident about where they were going. Thankfully this confidence appeared to be well-founded, as he soon found himself in a building with several corridors of numbered rooms. Upon entering room 27, Kaylin saw a man sitting cross-legged at the far end of an arena. He wore khaki shorts that matched the khaki vest he sported over his hunter green t-shirt. The man stood with a grin, still idly toying with a Pokeball. "'Bout time you got here. I was worried the workers here had forgotten about me."

Kaylin laughed slightly. "I'm guessing you're my opponent?"

    "I'd better be. Name's Griffin. Who're you?"

    "Kaylin. Nice to meet you."

Griffin opened his mouth to comment on the femininity of the name, then caught himself and instead said, "Well, what now?"

Behind Kaylin the door opened, allowing a man in a uniform and glasses to step through. "I'll be presiding over this match," the man in glasses explained as his made his way to his place beside the field. "One on one, no time limit." He adjusted his spectacles. "Both Pokemon will be chosen simultaneously. Ready?"

Nodding, Griffin held up the Pokeball that had been in his hands for the past few minutes. "I've already got mine picked out."

Since I don't know what I'll be facing, I want good type coverage. And I'd rather not reveal Darcy just yet; so . . . Kaylin unclipped a Pokeball from his belt. "I've decided as well."

The referee held up his hands. "Then begin!"

"Let's do this, Probopass!" Griffin cast his Pokeball into the air, releasing his Pokemon a few yards in front of him.

"Come out, Angel." As Kaylin calmly held up his Pokeball, the Chandelure materialized in a flash of light.

Surveying his opponents, Griffin stifled a snigger. He was not a particularly rude person, but facing this slim boy named Kaylin who used a Pokemon named Angel, it was difficult not to find something funny. Pushing these thoughts aside, he focused on the battle.

His eyes flicking from his Pokemon to his opponent's and back, Kaylin made a few mental calculations. In terms of overall strength, our Pokemon are about even. By type and available moves, though, he has the advantage. Right now Angel's greatest assets are her speed and wit. Given the defenses of a Probopass, he's going to get some shots off at us however hard we hit him. I hope they're weak enough for us to survive, but I'm not going to depend on that chance. Strike and dodge seems the best strategy right now. Watching his opponent carefully, Kaylin ordered, "Angel, Flame Burst."

The Chandelure's center flame shot upward before arcing down toward the unmoving Probopass on the other side of the field, striking first the Pokemon then the nose units revolving about it as the fire rippled outward. The Probopass scarcely moved.

"I figured you'd stick with fire attacks. Smart. Just not good enough," Griffin commented before calling out, "Probopass, Power Gem!"

The Probopass glowed white as its Mini-Noses began to whirl in a circle. From the circle's center, a light burst out toward Angel.

"Counter with Energy Ball." A greenish orb shot from Angel's center, plant attack cutting into rock attack and dividing the beam into splayed rays. A few rays caught the Chandelure's arms, causing her to rock slightly.

"Nice trick, but how well will it work on a moving target? Power Gem again!" As the Mini-Noses whirled and released a glittering beam, they began to move upward and to the side, though their circle face remained always pointing toward Angel.

Kaylin remained unperturbed. "Phase into the ground." Like the ghost she was, the Chandelure slipped effortlessly into the arena floor, leaving the Power Gem attack to strike empty air.

Griffin smirked. "You can't escape that easily. Earth Power, Probopass." The Mini-Noses returned to their owner as energy rippled from it, causing the ground to tremble and release fragments of itself into the air.

"I'm sorry," Kaylin said quietly, an apologetic smile now on his features.

A spark of unease passed through the other trainer's mind. "What do you mean?" he asked warily.

"I'm afraid I wasn't clear about the purpose of Angel's movements. Angel, whenever you're ready."

Waves of heat rippled about the Probopass, followed by a column of fire reaching up out of the ground--a Flame Burst from below strong enough to cast the rock and steel type into the air. The compass Pokemon landed hard on its side as Angel floated gracefully into the air. She had been damaged by the Earth Power attack but weathered it well enough, and her trainer did not intend for her to be hit again this fight.

"Flash Cannon!" Griffin commanded, knowing what was coming next.

Faster than a Power Gem, the Probopass charged and released its attack from its glowing nose.

    "Dodge and Shadow Ball."

Given the Probopass's limited range from where it lay, Angel merely needed to move behind it before casting a Shadow Ball at its back. The Flash Cannon struck the wall to Kaylin's left, and the Shadow Ball hit the Probopass at its center.

"One more ought to be enough. Flame Burst."

The flames of Angel's arms and head combined to form a single sphere that struck her weakened opponent, exploding hotly on contact. As the fire dissipated, the result of the battle was clear. Probopass's form lay smoking, its eyes closed. At the side of the arena, the referee held up one arm.

"The winner is Chandelure, belonging to Kaylin. The match is over."

For a moment Griffin was silent. Then he sighed and recalled his Probopass. "Those TSF people weren't kidding when they said this would be tough." He crossed the arena and held out his hand. "Good match."

Angel returned to Kaylin's side as he shook Griffin's hand. "Good match," he agreed.

"Oh heck that ferry took so long I hope I'm not late!" A slim young boy sprinted down the path and past the decorative gardens. He made a turn for a random building without even looking to see what it was.

"I'm ready to begin!" Jamie shouted in the middle of the hotel reception. "Where's my first opponent?"

The receptionist lady stood up and the security officer took a couple of cautious steps forward. "Young man," the lady began with a slightly worried look on her face, "are you here for the TSF challenge?"

Jamie clenched his fists in front of him and grinned with a nod. "I'm gonna own this challenge!"

The receptionist gave a sigh and shook her head as though she had seen this kind of trainer a thousand times before. In a monotonous reciting tone she instructed, "Go out the door, to the left and straight on until you reach the ferry port and then follow the sign that says 'To TSF Registration' and registration will instruct you on where to go next."

Jamie blinked a few times and looked around, realising that the room he was in resembled a holiday hotel reception more than it did any battle related facility. He gave a loud laugh before barging back out the double doors and down the path to his destination, leaving the receptionist to shake her head and rub her temples.

At the registration desk Jamie handed over his trainer card and proof of his identification. "I'm gonna beat everyone!" He joyfully declared to the person behind the desk.

"Okay..." The man behind the desk said dismissively and handed Jamie's ID back over as well as a set of keys. "That is the key for your hotel room where you will be staying over the duration of the challenge. Your first opponent is in arena 2. That's out the back of this building, up the path and... huh?" The young man behind the desk stopped typing the details into his computer and looked around in confusion, wondering where Jamie had gone.

"I'm gonna be the very best! Dan nan nah that no one ever was! Dan nah nah-nah..." Jamie sang between pants as he raced towards the building housing the designated room he was going to battle in.

He barged (as he normally does) into the room to see his opponent jump out of fright at the opposite end of the room. She sat on a bench in a short pink dress and her brown hair tied up in buns. She looked no older than Jamie and smiled sweetly at him before getting up.

"Hi, are you my opponent? My name's Arial."

Jamie snorted. "You?" Just then Jamie realised Arial was accompanied by a man in uniform. "Hey, dude. Is she really gonna battle me?"

The man scowled, taking an instant disliking to Jamie's attitude. "You will both select a pokemon before the battle begins. This is a one-on-one match."

Jamie's face suddenly turned more serious. "Hm..." He began to think quietly to himself. So I need to make sure and not pick the wrong pokemon. Crop has a double weakness and so does Scorp. Tang is better for battles with more than one pokemon, and so is Pom. Fork is done for if Aerial Ace turns out to be weak against whatever she's got. If Dubs has a weakness, Roost is a wasted move too because of her low efences. Hm... Scorp can still take a few hits, has a decent move type range, and ice types aren't that common.

"I've chosen." Jamie kept a serious face.

"So have I!" Arial announced cheerfully.

"Then let the fight begin!" The referee blew a whistle, marking the start of the match.

Both trainers threw their pokeballs into the arena simultaneously. In a flash of light Jamie's selection emerged from its pokeball – a purple-skinned, yellow-eyed fanged creature that resembled a mixture between a bat and a scorpion, with small black webbed wings, large ears and large pincers. Its segmented tail curled round to the front, sporting a single stinger on the end. Jamie's Gliscor, Scorp, was ready to receive his first command.

On the opposite side of the arena a much larger opponent emerged from the pokeball. The beam of light grew and grew until it was nearly five times the length of Scorp and many times bigger and bulkier, before forming into the shape of a giant rock snake. The pokemon was built up into many boulder-like hard segments. Even its head was covered in an outer skeleton of rock. The Onix gave a thunderous roar indicating its readiness for battle.

Jamie took only a couple of seconds to think before giving his first commands.

"Scorp, Swords Dance!" Jamie knew it was risky, but he was also familiar with strategising against pokemon his birds were weak against. He knew of Onix's low attack compared with Scorp's higher defense, so he was sure Scorp could take a few hits.

Arial's sweet expression turned into a sinister smirk. "Heavy Slam, Onix!"

Jamie gulped. He should have expected something like that, but he spent so much time thinking about type and stat differences that he forgot to take into account Onix's spectacular weight.

Scorp wasn't that much faster than Onix, but he was able to increase his power with swords dance first. He crossed his pincers over his chest and spun in rapid dance-like motions to improve his focus. This was just a split second before Onix's boulder-chain body came crashing down on top of him sending chippings flying and cracks splitting across the arena floor. Scorp was so focused on his swords dance that he didn't even see the attack coming and was flattened under his opponent.

"Scorp!" Jamie shouted too late. Handling such small and typically fragile pokemon he was used to seeing them take some harsh attacks, but it still made him feel ill to see them suffer something so severe. He growled and gritted his teeth, frustrated at how deceptive the other trainer had been with her outward appearance. Jamie was almost certain it was purely to bring his guard down. He couldn't imagine someone so small, frilly and feminine would even use a pokemon that could make use of such a brutal attack.

The Onix lifted its body slowly off the floor with pieces of rock and linoleum dropping from its front. Scorp lay crooked and shaking in pain where he had been caught under the Onix's enormous bulk.

"Scorp can you get up?!" Jamie shouted. "C'mon get up!"

Scorp eased himself slowly off the floor and grinned sheepishly, showing his fangs. It was clear from his bent ear and torn wing membranes that he had sustained heavy damage. However he still had some fight left in him.

"Great, Scorp! Hang in there, buddy! Knock it off-balance with an Earthquake!" Jamie commanded encouragingly.

"Huh?! That didn't do it?! Ugh you have to do another Heavy Slam! Don't let it back up this time!" Arial seemed far more irritated. "Hurry, Onix!"

Scorp soared into the air briefly before rocketing back down towards the ground. He readjusted his posture at the last second, pointing his pincers towards the floor and creating an epicentre for the quake. At top speed his pincers collided with the ground, sending a shockwave in all directions and upsetting the linoleum of the floor. It cracked and broke up in a rippling wave that hurtled towards the Onix before sending the heavy pokemon crashing towards the floor. The heat and energy from the earthquake caused fractures to erupt across the boulder segments of the Onix's body.

Arial's command for her Onix to hurry up also cost the beast its move. The Onix was half-way though performing the Heavy Slam attack when he was hit by the Earthquake and ended up crashing to the ground off-balance and off-target.

"Earthquake again! Don't let it back up!" Jamie shouted while Arial was still gawking at the sight before her and trying to think up a new strategy.

Scorp repeated his previous motion into the air, readying himself to impact against the ground and create an Earthquake, when Arial finally shouted, "Rock slide before it attacks!"

In the split second it took for Scorp to begin to freefall, the tired and cracked Onix's body began to glow a blue aura. Large rocks and pieces of linoleum thrown up by the previous Earthquake shot up into the air until they were hovering around Onix. The Onix gave a deafening roar as the rocks suddenly hurtled towards Scorp like bullets. Just before Scorp hit the ground to create an Earthquke he was struck by one of the rocks and thrown backwards from the force of the impact. His Earthquake was completely disrupted. The little flying pokemon tumbled across the back of the arena until he came to a halt on the floor.

"Haha! Gotcha!" Arial did a twirl and threw her fist into the air.

"Argh! Come on Scorp, one more Earthquake! Don't fool around this time, you're faster than that!"

Scorp's head snapped around towards his master, before turning back to the fight. He narrowed his almond-shaped yellow eyes before jumping back into the air with more speed than before to get just enough height to perform the attack.

"Oh no! Do another Rock Slide quickly!" Arial shouted.

Despite his weakness and tiredness Onix responded yet again with haste and its body began to glow blue. Pieces of rock crumbled from its body as it willed the power necessary to lift the rocks off and from beneath the floor. However before he could complete his attack he was hit yet again by another powerful quake. Pieces of the floor rippled towards Onix in a shock wave, shattering his body even further and causing him to topple onto the jagged ground. The rocks he had lifted for his Rock Slide attack fell all around him unused.

"Aah!" Arial gasped in distraught and stepped forward an inch as if to lunge towards Onix's side, but just remembering that it would be dangerous for her to enter the battle scene.

Onix tried to push himself back of the ground, but his boulder segments turned in uncoordinated ways and fragments of his outer rocky shell dropped onto the ground. Using up all the energy he could muster he coiled back for a mere moment before tumbling back down into a heap on top of himself. A cloud of dust rose from his body and there was silence in the arena.

The referee took a few steps into the arena and glanced between both combatants. "Onix has lost the will to fight. The winner is Jamie with his Gliscor. You will await further instructions." The referee left the room for just a moment, giving the two trainers time to return their pokemon and take in what had happened. The arena was a mess, full of rocks and dust. The floor was completely destroyed by the Earthquake and Rock Slide attacks. The two trainers stared at each other for a moment before a grin spread across Jamies face.

"Ha! I won! You lost!" Jamie burst out into a fit of laughter from the exhilaration of winning the battle.

Rina stood in awe of the magnificent skyline that lay before her. A complex of huge buildings glinting silver in the sunlight came ever closer as the cruiser approached the Battle Frontier. "Well, guys," she spoke to her pokemon who were anxiously waiting in their pokeballs, "this is going to be one heck of an adventure."

The ship finally docked and Rina followed the dozens of other competitors to the main registration hall. The place was swarming with a ridiculous amount of trainers and staff members. It took her a while to find exactly what line she was supposed to be in. After about ten minutes of standing in line, she finally made it to the front desk. A woman with long mahogany hair stood in front of her.

"Welcome. May I have your name and Trainer ID please?"

"Oh, sure." Rina got her wallet out of her bag and retrieved her ID from its inside pocket. "Here you go. My name's Rina Hendrix, spelled with an 'x' at the end." People often misspelled her last name with a 'ks'. It was becoming tiresome to correct their spelling so she decided to jump the gun and correct them before they even ask.

"Alright, here's your ID back, along with your Battle Pass. It will allow you access into the events here at the Frontier. Please make your way to Arena 34 where you will compete in a one-on-one placement battle."

Rina smiled to herself. Of course a competitive place like this wouldn't let you settle in first. Why would they? Everyone here was invited for the same reason: they are the best of the best when it comes to battling. In any situation. So, when everyone is excited and distracted by their new surroundings, they're pushed into a battle right away. These people were very clever.

She made her way to Arena 34 and entered through the sliding double-doors. Her opponent was already in the room. He was a blond-haired teenage boy who looked to be about seventeen years old. He wore a pair of jeans and a black t-shirt. He walked over to her and introduced himself. "Hey. My name's Jeffrey. Nice to meet you. Sorry I'm gonna kick your butt in a minute, though." he said with a smirk.

"Ha. Not a chance. My pokemon will beat yours any day. The name's Rina by the way."

Just then, an official looking man in a uniform came into the room. "This will be a one-on-one pokemon battle. Each trainer will choose their pokemon and release them simultaneously. Have you each selected your pokemon?"

Rina knew exactly which pokemon she would use. This was her first step into becoming part of one of the greatest battle organizations ever. She wanted her most trusted and loyal friend to be there to take that step with her. She took the pokeball off her belt and smirked at her opponent. "I'm ready. Bring it on."

"So am I. Let's see what you've got girlie."Jeffrey retorted.

"Then let the match begin!" The referee signaled the start of the battle.

"Poseidon! Let's do this!" Rina threw her pokeball into the air, releasing a huge tortoise pokemon. "Blaaaast!" he cried, eager to help his master and friend win this fight. At the same time, Jeffrey threw his pokeball, releasing the pokemon inside. A light blue aquatic pokemon, Quagsire, appeared in front of the Blastoise. Poseidon didn't have any sort of type advantage over Quagsire, but at least it was the same way for Jeffrey's pokemon.

"Iron Defense, right away! Then use Surf!" For a moment, Poseidon's entire body turned silver as he made his skin and shell as hard as iron. He then summoned a giant wave that rolled across the arena, soaking not only Quagsire and Jeffrey, but also the TSF official. Oops...

Jeffrey wiped the water off of his face, annoyed at getting soaked. "Don't stand for that, Quagsire! Use Earthquake to make it lose it's balance, then Slam!" The water fish pokemon made the ground tremble and crack. Poseidon was unable to escape the attack and was hurt by the chunks of rock that flew out from the quake's centre. Quagsire then ran up to the Blastoise and executed a full-body Slam in the attempt at knocking him over. Luckily, Poseidon had been able to quickly regain his balance and avoid being toppled over by the force of the attack.

Now that the Quagsire was much closer to Poseidon, Rina decided to use a more forceful attack. Quagsire's species was significantly slower than Blastoise's, so hopefully this attack would turn out to be like a point blank shot. "Use Surf again, then Hydro Pump! Knock that thing off it's feet!" Poseidon sent another great wave crashing down onto the arena, causing Quagsire to reflexively shield its face with its arms. He then shot great jets of water from the cannons on his shoulders, hitting his opponent dead on. When Quagsire moved his hands away from his face, the attack had already begun and he couldn't dodge fast enough. He was blasted all the way across the field.

"Quagsire, no!" Jeffrey called out to his pokemon who lay collapsed on the floor. "C'mon, get up! You're not out yet!" Surely enough, Quagsire was able to get back up after that Hydro Pump. Rina was impressed. Most of the pokemon they fought before would have fainted from the sheer force of the water pressure. "Give them a taste of their own medicine. Muddy Water, now!" The amphibious pokemon sent a wave of dirty, muddy water towards Rina and Poseidon, causing Poseidon to produce the same reflexive reaction of guarding his face. "Now use Mud Shot!" Quagsire spat a stream of mud at the Blastoise, covering it in sticky mud.

By now, both pokemon were beginning to show signs of tiredness. It was time to finish this battle now. She saw Quagsire getting ready for another Earthquake attack, so she came up with a plan. "Get your cannons ready, buddy! Just one at a time!" Just as she ordered her Blastoise to use Hydro Pump, the Earthquake started, causing the water attack to miss it's target. This time, Poseidon lost his footing and fell to the ground on his back.

"Ha!" Jeffrey laughed. "We've got this now! Attack that oversized tortoise, as hard as you can!" Quagsire ran up to his opponent and jumped in the air, ready to Slam the Blastoise into the ground. Unfortunately for him, he fell right into Rina's plan. Both Jeffrey and Quagsire had forgotten Poseidon had only released one of his shoulder cannons. The other one was still charged with a Hydro Pump. Right as Quagsire was about to land on Poseidon, he unleashed the pressurized water from the cannon and sent the water fish flying up into the air. If he had survived that second Hydro Pump, he certainly didn't survive the fall back down. Jeffrey's pokemon hit the ground hard, sending dust into the air. Once it settled, it was clear that the Quagsire had fainted.

The official stepped up closer to the battlefield. His clothes were still wet from being accidentally hit with Surf. "The match goes to Rina and her Blastoise. Trainers, please wait here for a few moments. I will be back with further instructions." He left using a side door and went to speak to his superiors. First, though, a change of clothes would be in order.
