  • Hi everyone! Today, I present you my newest game (hack), which is Pokémon Red Expert. I've just finished it yesterday!

This game is a hack of Pokémon Red. It's a much harder version of the game designed for experts Pokémon players (and trainers)! Trainers are of course much stronger, but people are more mature in general and have things to teach you if you want to become an expert in life in general.

This game is also a kind of corrected upgrade to Pokémon Red Proud Eyes v4.0 (a hack made by Break). I used it as a base mainly for the Gen 2 sprites and I conserved most In-game trades from it, while adding or changing some of them. However, I did several significant changes that make it completely different from Red Proud Eyes v4.0, and much better too!

Here is the list of the majority of the changes from the original version:
    - Pokémon and people sprites are updated to 2nd-Gen graphics (This was made by Break in Red Proud Eyes)
    - New starters: Exeggcute, Growlithe and Shellder. (Those have been bred by Blue's original Pokémon, and Prof Oak wants to offer you a different feeling/quest, and it's so good to have changes!)
    - Almost all Pokémon learns at least 1, 2 or 3 new moves at level 1, and while they level-up as well.
o These moves have been taken from future generations (Even up to Gen 9!), egg moves or duplicates of the same great and essential moves that needed to be relearned (To avoid a Pokémon from being walled completely!).
o In total, 523 new moves have been added among the 151 Pokémon (Except Ditto, Caterpie and Weedle, of course!)!
o Each moveset have been carefully done, and adjustments have been made, throwing away "useless" moves.
o "Useless" moves like Disable, Focus Energy (Doesn't work well in Gen 1) and Haze are not learnable anymore. Also, those who learn Roar, Mist or Whirlwind learn it only at level 1.
o For a list of the new movesets, visit the section in the website, or view a joined PDF or Excel document!
    - Geography has been changed! Routes are expanded a little, but nature has taken place. Some areas have changed drastically, such as Route 6 which has been flooded by wild Water-type Pokémon. Also, some towns contain wild Pokémon in grassy areas.
    - The order of the adventure has changed a little. You can access to Cerulean Cave much earlier in the earlier in the game. Also, you have to go on Route 9 (Then Rock Tunnel and so on) after helping Bill at Route 25 (instead of going to Vermilion City).
    - The obtaining of some important items for your quest has changed as well. For example, you obtain the CARD KEY from Mr.Fuji, you obtain the Poké Flute from Silph Co's president and the S.S. Ticket from a man in Vermilion City. HM05 is also found in the Power Plant. Be sure to talk to everyone!
    - Several people who give an item to you give a new item instead.
    - Many important items have new adjusted prices (Some are inspired by Pokémon Crystal's clearance sales of Goldenrod City's Dept-Store rooftop). However, some items are more expensive, such as the evolution stones, rare candies and repels.
    - Some items, such as the Moon Stone, Ether and Elixer, now have a price, of course, as it should have always been.
    - All trainers, Gyms leaders, Rival battles and Elite 4 have changed significantly! They are all harder than before! Many have brand new Pokémon too!
o Some trainers, such as new Cooltrainers on the road, even have up to 6 Pokémon on their team, so be prepared for some tough challenges!
o Movesets for Gyms and Elite Four have been carefully done and revised to give you a great challenge! (No more Sky Attack Jolteon like in Break's Red Proud Eyes)
o Team Rocket is less present in this game, but they're still here, and have some plans.
o You can also have some battles with Prof. Oak during your quest.
    - You can now buy all TMs at various Marts through Kanto. All marts have been changed and adjusted with other items as well!
    - TM04 is now Gust instead of Whirlwind (They are similar moves, right? Since I couldn't change TMs compatibilities, it's the only new TM in this game! Also, Whirlwind is completely useless in a trainer battle, so Gust is a slightly better option).
    - Some attacks have been readjusted to be like the future games (Like they should always have been in some cases!). For example:
    o Karate Chop is a Fighting-type move.
    o Gust is a Flying-type move.
    o Sand-Attack is a Ground-type move.
o Mega Drain has a power of 75 and Absorb has a Power of 40 (That's the same as LGP/LGE)
o Jump Kick and Hi Jump Kick have power of 100 and 130 respectively (Like since Black/White!)
o Dig and Fly has power of 80 and 90 respectively (Like since Diamond/Pearl!)
o Other moves have been adjusted according to 7th Gen (Sun/Moon positives changes in power only).
    - In-game trades have changed! (Some from Red Proud Eyes have been kept, but some others have been changed! There's also a bonus new In-Game Trade at Pewter City.)
    - The 2 Snorlax on Route 16 and 12 are both at level 40, Zapdos is level 35, Moltres is level 55, Articuno is level 55 and Mewtwo is level 20 (Can be met much earlier in the game!). Also, the ghost Marowak is Cubone's father, and is at level 55!
    - Game corner prizes have changed! (For the details, see the Marts section on the website)
    - Wild Pokémon have changed significantly in every route, areas or caves, and even in the sea (See a joined Word Document for details). Also, each Pokémon is sure to appear in the wild in this game, but some are really very rare!
    - Many dialogs have changed or have been improved! You'll mostly hear new dialogs about many things about life in general, to make you a better person (or an expert!). Most people are mature and talk to you politely, since you're an expert to become (not a kid!).
    - You can buy Rare Candies at Celadon Dept-Store (5F), which are sure to help you in the later part of the game. (Note you can still trade Pokémon by using TGB DUAL, and since traded Pokémon grow faster, it will sure help!)
    - Many more changes and surprises for you to discover!

I've played a million of these type of hacks but I've got two long airplane rides coming up and I appreciate this.

Some questions -- were stats updated or altered at all? I believe you updated stats to match later gens in some of your other hacks. And if the answer is yes, does this mean that special stats were altered at all when special is one stat in gen 1? Like was Nidoking's attack raised to 102 and was his special raised to 85?

Were moves updated outside of raising BP for some? Like, does Growth now raise the special stat? Was Sludge made to be like Sludge Bomb since that's not in the game and it sounds like you turned Mega Drain into Giga Drain.

Are badge boosts still in the game? Do enemy trainers get stat experience?

Is there a post-game of any kind?

Would you consider a harder mode that forces set mode and/or removes the use of items in battle?

Thank you for the good work.

    Hey there, Eric Gall.

The idea of making a slightly harder version of RBY with some updated and positive dialogue has piqued my interest. I'm playing now and, up till the first gym, it's been a nice and refreshing experience! :)

I used gen one hacking tools to answer some of my own questions and it looks like no stats were changed and moves mostly weren't changed. Maybe nobody cares but thought I would share.

Hey again. I've playing this and it's quite fun to see a GEN I experience with some improved learnsets, even if there are no new moves to speak of.

I get that, because you wanted to create a Pokemon world with a more positive overtone you had to omit Team Rocket. But I wonder if presenting them as a bunch of cynical and nihilist guys who don't believe in what most other characters tell you (such as: "find your purpose in Life"; "Work hard and you'll be rewarded"; "Accept your failures as part of the process", etc.) wouldn't have been also a nice twist.

You could even make it so that Team Rock and/or Giovanni eventually come to terms with the fact that their cynicism was misguided and, after losing to you, they begin to realise maybe their lives could also change for the better. Even the bad guys would get a redemption story and you'd feel like an active part of their personal evolution as people.

Anyways: I'm still in Cerulean, so I'm not sure how much Team Rocket will be an actual part of the Game, but I can tell - judging from what I've played up to this point and by the screenshots of Oak guarding the Game Corner poster that they have been severely omitted.

One more question -- were trade evolutions altered? I started training a Machop and just realized it may never grow up to be a Machamp...

    Update: The answer is no.

    Hey there.

I'm at Victory Road and I've noticed that an NPC has a Dragonite with Fly. I tried to teach Fly to my own Dragonite, to no avail :( It seems unfair.

Edit: Given that most trainers seem to simply use level-up learnsets, it could be that you programmed Dragonite to learn Fly via level-up but not through HM use. It would be great if you could fix that. Thanks.
