Pokémon Riddles

Do you like riddles? Do you know an absurd amount of Pokémon trivia and lore? Do you want to get some sweet sweet points to help your team?

If you've answered yes to any one of those, than you've come to the right place!

The rules of the game

During the two weeks of the Get Together, every third day a total of 5 quizzes containing 5 riddles and puzzles in general each will be released.

After their release, your team will have a set amount of time to respond the quiz via private message or direct message to the host, Radio, having the Quiz and your Team somewhere in the title. E.g.:

Pokemon Riddles - Quiz #1 (Caelum)

But replace the quiz number and team name.

Please don't post your answers in this thread, but feel free to discuss the answers and riddles among your teammates.

All the riddles will be Pokémon related, although each quiz might have their own restrictions (such as "you don't need to know anything about the anime to answer these questions").

How the scoring works

As you might be expecting, the rankings for each quiz will be given based on how many correct answers you have. If needed, we'll use how long it took to get the answer as a tie breaker.

First place in each quiz gets 30 points, second place gets 20 points and third place gets 10 points.

Quiz 1

To start off our Get Together, we'll have our first set of riddles. None of the questions below will require knowledge of the Pokémon anime, Pokémon manga or the Pokémon Trading Card Game, although they might require knowledge across various games of the Pokémon franchise.

The Questions

1. When born, I was special, but now I'm no longer. Though every one has me, I might be hidden. What am I?
2. You used me to wait, and used me to battle, but now I'm nothing but a trophy to be sold. What am I?
3. Though the laziest will display me, the busiest will hide me. I'm hard to get rid off, but you might want to pass me around. What am I?
4. Before my crown's gaze, you mustn't rush. You may defer, but trying to cut in line before me will have consequences. What am I?
5. Though I am quite loud, you've never heard me. And none have ever seen me, though you might have seen my clone. What am I?

The deadline was originally July 8th, but given the rule change, Quiz #1 will be given an extra day and end on July 9th 10:01 AM UTC-3 to send your answers via PM or Discord DM to the host Radio (that's me), having the Quiz and your Team somewhere in the title. E.g.:

I already answered you on Discord, but just so everybody knows: the only restrictions given are those in the posts of quiz.

Which means, that for the Quiz #1, for example, they won't reference anything in the anime, manga or TCG. Anything else is fair game though.

Since a lot of people have been telling me the riddles are way too hard, I've consulted with the managers and we're changing the rules a little bit.

Quizzes are now team efforts so be sure to discuss with your teammates and see if you can brainstorm the answers together! This also means that the scoring will now be done in a team vs team manner (with more points, yay!), instead of whoever got the most answers.

As such, I strongly recommend you join the Discord if you haven't already!

Given the rule change, we'll also be postponing the first deadline by a day, so you'll have until July 9th 10:01 UTC-3 to send the answers.

After some instability we managed to finish our first quiz: here are the answers:

When born I was special, - In Gen III some texts and blurbs referred to abilities as special abilities
but now I'm no longer. - From Gen IV onwards this was completely gone

2. Honey
You used me to wait, - In Gen IV Honey was used in Honey Trees and took 6 real life hours to work
and used me to battle, - Up until Gen VIII they could trigger wild encounters or Horde Encounter
but now I'm nothing but a trophy to be sold. - now it's just a collectable.

3. Truant
Though the laziest will display me, - Sloths (Slakoth and Slaking) are lazy and are the prime examples of Truant users
the busiest will hide me. - Ants (Durant) are very busy and can only get Truant via HA
I'm hard to get rid off, but you might want to pass me around. - Some ability altering moves won't work on Truant but the few that do are invaluable to use it competitively

4. Queenly Majesty
Before my crown's gaze, - Reference to ability name
you mustn't rush. - No positive priority moves allowed
You may defer out of politeness, - Negative priority is OK.
but trying to cut in line before me will have consequences. - But no positive priority.

5. Cacophony
Though I am quite loud, - Cacophony means loud sound
you've never heard me. And none have ever seen me, - Cacophony was never released
though you might have seen my clone. - Soundproof is a clone of Cacophony as it does the exact same things it did.

We've finished our second quiz. Here are the answers:

Many dread see me, yet some welcome me. - In some challenges, and certain stall teams, you want to Struggle / see your opponent Struggle.

3. Sketch
If you used me, you replaced. - Sketch is permanently replaced upon (successful) use
I could do anything, except talk, - Sketch couldn't copy Chatter
but now I can't do a thing at all. - Before it was Dexited out of existence

4. Belch*
I can make food dangerous, yet I'm not mold. - Belch only works after the user ate a berry
Among my siblings, I'm the least reliable. - It has the lowest accuracy out of all the moves that weaponizes Berries (Natural Gift and Fling)

5. Twineedle
I was once the sole poisoner of machines, - Twineedle could poison steel types in Gen II
yet now I'm no longer. - That went away in Gen III, and as of Gen VII any (non damaging poison) move with a Poison chance can do it if the user has Corrosion.

* Poltergeist also fits since the riddle was a bit ambiguous, so both answers will be considered
I can make food dangerous, yet I'm not mold. - Poltergeist can make Berries, Bread, Spice Mix and whatever other edible (and non-edibles) dangerous
Among my siblings, I'm the least reliable. - The only Ghost move with less than 100% base accuracy

4. As far as I'm concerned, beating up people is the best medicine ... unless your sheer power cows me. What am I?
5. Once I was normal, then I went to the dark side. Now, flinch at my sight! What am I?

We've finished our third quiz and officially passed the halfway point! Here are the answers:

1. Poké Doll
Once I did exorcisms, - In Gen I the Poké Doll could exorcize the Marowak spirit in the Pokémon Tower
but now I can no longer - this was patched on FRLG and LGP/E

2. Slowpoketail
Ridiculous expensive - In GSC, SlowpokeTail is sold at some point at prices beyond what the player can even pay, after that it's sold at a much more sedate 9.8k ... which is still too much for an item that doesn't do anything.
and not cruelty-free - Team Rocket was being cruel to extract the tails in GSC (surprised pikachu)
Except maybe in the tropics, where I'm a delicacy - It's an Alolan delicacy and the Pokedex states they can be extracted without cruelty (and in fact just pop off naturally)

3. Amaze Mulch
Some may think I'm crappy, - Mulch (and fertilizers in general) often include literal crap (manure)
but really, I'm amazing - Reference to the name
at least if you're in France. - Won't work in Hoennian or Alolan soil, only in Kalos

4. Shell Bell
As far as I'm concerned, beating up people is the best medicine - Shell Bell heals depending on how much health you deal
unless your sheer power cows me - unless the move is boosted by Sheer Force.

5. Bite
Once I was normal, then I went to the dark side - Bite was a normal type move in Gen I, but became Dark type in Gen II
Now, flinch at my sight! - Byte has a flinch chance

4. I once cared so much about my signature, that those who used it in the wild would turn into me. What am I?
5. Once I could only use brains or brawns, but not both. Now, I've taken my namesake to heart. What am I?

1. Mega Rayquaza
I had a lock without a key, - Normal Rayquaza has the ability Air Lock
now I can stream even offline - But Mega Rayquaza has the ability Delta Stream
I've ascended to greater heights - In order to Mega Evolve, Mega Rayquaza must have the move Dragon Ascent
so if you dare face me ... well, then anything goes. - Mega Rayquaza was so broken when it came out that the Anything Goes tier was created just for it.

2. Shedinja
Once a gift freely given, now you need some balls to get me. - In Gen III you got Shedinja whenever you evolved Nincada and had a free slot, but from Gen IV onwards you need an extra Pokéball.
I am filled with wonder - Reference to Wonder Guard
but beware ... one wrong look and I'll have your soul. - According to the Pokedex, if you stare into Shedinja's back hole it'll eat your spirit.

3. Nidoqueen or Regigigas or Mew
Nidoqueen comes after Nidorina and Nidoran-F on the Pokémon, and for some reason can't breed, although a number of Pokedex entries mention it having children.
Regigigas was introduced a generation after Regirock, Registeel and Regice, who, according to the Pokedex were explicitly created by it.
Mew comes after Mewtwo in the Pokedex and was the last Pokémon to be introduced into the original Red and Green, only two weeks before the games' release.

4. Ditto
In Generations I and II, if any wild Pokémon used Transform, after capture they'd become a Ditto.

5. Unown
Once I could only use brains or brawns, but not both. - Unown never can choose between using a special (brains) or physical (brawns) move. Only one, or the other, in the form of Hidden Power (Special after Gen IV, either Special or Physical before that) and Struggle (Physical). And whenever it can Struggle, it can't use Hidden Power.
Now, I've taken my namesake to heart. - Unown is a pun on Unknown, which is the Pokémon current status since it's been Dexited out of existence (although it'll probably come back in BDSP).

a knight and also a thief. - It has a knight design and it stole the shell from Shelmet to evolve
Still, my exploits are rather famous. - According to the Pokedex, Escavalier is the subject of a famous painting in the Galarian region

4. Finneon
Despite not being a bug, some call me a butterfly. - Some Pokedex entries call it the Beautifly of the sea
Despite not being a battery, I am solar powered. - Multiple Pokedex entries say its pink parts can store sunlight
Still, beware of the light, for not all that glitters is gold ... - To attract prey during the nighttime.

5. Morelull
I'm a parasite, - Morelull saps the energy of nearby trees
a sleeping pill - They're a Sporer
and a snack all in one - It's said that the mushrooms on its head are eaten by some Pokemon.
Though I'm dangerous, you can't resist. You just have to see me! - Despite knowing the danger, Morelull forests are tourist attractions in the Alola region.

First of all I'd like to thank all of you for participating! I know the difficulty levels were ... a bit wonky (or perhaps you're all just that smart?) and some of the riddles were a bit more ambiguous than I would have like, but that's what happens when I try to do these without any proofreaders. I hope this was enjoyable (or at least not painful) and added to your GT experience.
