    Pokemon Spirit Chronicles

In a parallel world to the Pokémon universe we're familiar with, Pokémon are rapidly starting to become a threat to society. The urbanisation of cities, and travelling across the region of Kanto becomes difficult when unknown numbers of monsters with seemingly magical powers hinders progress. In order to get by, the century-old practice of Soul Forging has been revitalised, allowing humans to convert the souls of Pokémon into tools, weapons, and other items; more effective than tools made from ordinary materials. While expensive, Pokéquipment has taken the entire world by storm, commercialised as a way humans can live free without fear of monsters.

But it's not so cut-and-dry. Soul-infused weapons are a prime target for the millitia, the government, and underground organisations. The High Councils across the regions of the country have tried their best to keep things in the balance, but something always slips through the cracks. On the other hand, individuals who find the extraction of souls cruel and abhorrent are becoming increasingly more vocal, and try to look for other methods to balance humans and Pokémon. But what happens when these philosophical differences collide?

At the same time, there's trouble brewing in Johto. Rooted firmly around a feudal political practice, the region refuses to adopt the govermental system of the High Council, and is starting to barricade itself from the rest of the country; not taking kindly to interlopers. If someone doesn't intervene and create a solution, there might be a civil war on their hands. Maybe the Kanto High Council can be mobilised to assist?

We follow the journeys of Blue - a charismatic thief from Pallet Town - and Gold, a hot-headed bodyguard drafted in from Johto; as their misson to do some research for Philosopher Samuel Oak gradually turns into an adventure embroiled in the wonders of Pokémon, a quest for peace, and the mysterious-yet-influential Guild Rokka.
Will they restore political peace to Kanto? Who's outlook on society is the one true answer? Only time will tell.

    Introduction

Greetings, all. I'm here on behalf of Victory Road Productions to show you our project.
    I hope you enjoy it.

Pokémon Spirit Chronicles is a game we've been working on for almost a year now. It's grown and taken shape quite a bit since its beginning, and we plan to make it the best game we possibly can.

    Pokemon Spirit Chronicles

(One of the pictures that inspired us, drawn by Nishihara Isao.)

The idea for this game came from a series of pictures drawn by a Japanese artist, Nishihara Isao. Ostensibly, it was his concept for a Pokémon MMO. When our group found it, we began brainstorming a game where things would be...a bit different from your average Pokémon game.

    The Game

Pokémon Spirit Chronicles takes place before the creation of the Pokéball, and before the advent of most technology used in the normal Pokémon games. It's a much harsher, less friendly world than the one many are used to. When a parent tells their kid to stay out of the tall grass, they really mean it. Pokémon are not the calm beasts gamers are used to.

For individual people, the main way of keeping themselves safe from wild Pokémon while they travel is through the usage of Pokéquipment, weapons and armor forged with the captured soul of a Pokemon. These spirit-infused items gain experience and learn new moves through battle, and with up to 6 equippable by one person at once, the level of customization you have available is practically limitless.

I can't reveal too much else just yet, but I can answer your questions as best I can.
One last picture, before I wrap things up:

  • Woah, seems like a great idea :D
I'm gonna check out the blog in a sec.
Nice artwork, and i love the idea of creating equipment and such through using a Pokemon's soul.
Brilliant idea, can't wait to see some actual screens of the game ^^

  • Oh dear Lord, marry me.

This is wonderful. This is the project I've wanted to see for years. This is the project that these boards has always needed. You and your team are visionaries, sir, and your project makes me so excited that I just can't contain myself.

While I normally balk at the idea of "fusing" with Pokemon (in the same vein that I balked at Season 4 of Digimon), this seems a bit different. This is something truly different, and inspirationally creative.

Please, don't let this be another tease thread. So many great ideas come and go, but you've caught my attention already and I want this to succeed.

By far the best and most original concept that I have ever seen.

What kind of jobs do you need?

At the moment, we're in need of programmers and spriters, especially. We wouldn't turn down artists or composers, though.

We do ask that all applicants be at least somewhat serious about this project, though. Having 'lol' and 'XD' and spelling mistakes in your application is not likely to work out well. We're a fun-loving group of people, but we take our project seriously.

Good day to you all. I'm Six Of Spades, writer and project co-ordinator for Pokémon Spirit Chronicles. I responsible for taking the game world you know, and giving it more depth and flavour, tastier and more juicy than the best conditioned Poffin.

While I'm not able to post images presently, I'll be happy to answer any technical and/or lore related questions - as long as you don't needle me for spoilers.

  • Why the lack of testosterone? One male playable character seems a bit... odd and uncomfortable.

If you could compare your writing style to that of any retail JRPG, what would you compare yours to? Final Fantasy? Shin Megami Tensei? Tales of? Suikoden?

Will there be any sort of replacement for the badge collecting and gym conquering of old? Or is it just straight up "save the world" stuff?

Really interested in this project, looking forward to seeing your response.

Greetings. I'm Lunaris as you can see. Currently the project director, responsible for recruiting, organizing and overseeing the project.

As Six of Spades, I'm currently unable to post images and links, but I'll do my best to answer to most(if not all) of your questions.

Stealing this question from SoS though.

While the main party is consists most of female characters, we do have their male counterparts in game, be it as guests characters(some of which will be playable during some parts of the game) or NPCs. We defined the main character roster very early in the development stage, to be honest, since day 1. It's hard to explain why, but it just seemed the right thing to do. But don't be disappointed. I can promise the way things are set will be more than interesting.

In terms of writing style, we're going for the kind of subject matter of the SMT games (dealing in black/grey morality, the nature of human condition, toying with magic and knowledge we don't fully understand/control), but with the kind of role subversion that appears in the Wild Arms games. Age, gender, and nationalities of characters don't completely reflect their personalities, allegiance to your goal, or indeed how they see the social issue of Pokéquipment.

All Lords and Ladies overseeing a settlement will carry Seals that provide proof of authenticity to both documents and people requiring an audience with the High Council. Since Pokéquipment can be as dangerous as it is useful, Seals are also licences to use certain items. Of course the only way to get a seal by default is to be a resident in that City or Town, but getting multiple seals that way would be... inefficient. Not all Lords can be gained audience with, and some are more welcoming than others.

Of course while the High Council is indeed a powerful force, getting a Government into action can be slow, so in times of danger things must be taken into one's hands. You'll come across a wide range of hazards, from the dangerous to the illegal to the downright suicidal. These will generally take precedence over trying to get an audience with a huffy official. You're fighting for your life, after all.

Ah! Shin Megami Tensei and Wild Arms? A far better answer than I could have hoped for! You are a man after my own heart, sir.

Looking forward to seeing more, as previously pandered. If I can think of any other questions, I'll be sure to ask. I only wish that I were more than one person, so that I could offer whatever services I could to the project; unfortunately I am both talentless and far too busy to help.

Yeah, we want to work from the very best. Of course while mature our plotline isn't quite so morbid as classic SMT, nor does it quite have the desperado of Wild Arms, but if we took too much from our reference material, it'd cheapen things a bit, wouldn't you say?

As for helping out, even the discussions we have with the general public in threads like these help us out; so you'll be doing us a great service by just staying tuned for the updates we set loose~

  • This looks absolutely godly! I can't wait for its release.

As to the whole 1 male 3 female thing, I'm used to that. (I still religiously play Final Fantasy V after beating it so many times...)

And the concept art... i love it! (saves party pic as background)

I was thinking, what equipment could you possibly make from a rattata or a pidgey.

Every Pokémon turns into at least one weapon and one armour piece. There are exceptions, but those are as rare as the Pokémon you obtain them from...

    Finally, image-posting abilities GET.

With the release of Heart Gold and Soul Silver, let's have a GSC-related update!

    Pokemon Spirit Chronicles

Introducing to you Silver, the mysterious and ever-so-slightly brooding rival of the Johto region. He's a thief like Blue, but his motives and... unique sense of dress make it look a little less glamorous. He steals an important item from Professor Elm, and the poor guy needs it back pretty badly. Elm's a little reluctant to specify just what was stolen, though. Maybe it would be a good idea to put a stop to things before something unpleasant happens.
