Saddest Scenes in Video Games?

What scenes in games you've played made you really sad? I have a couple.

The first is in Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days after Xion dies. The scene changes to Namine's picture of Roxas, Axel and Xion all together and holding hands. I thought this was really sad because the three of them made a promise to be together forever, and it's like that was just torn away from them.

The second is one of the scenes in Resident Evil: Revelations where Parker lets go of Chris's hand and falls to his "death". even though Parker survives, this was awful for a couple of reasons, the first being that you'd just found him dying in the hall minutes earlier and carried him through a maze of mutants. At this point you can't attack or dodge and your movement speed is halved, so you're getting beaten on all sides and Chris (who has a gun) isn't any help at all. And after you've been through all that, thinking you're home free, Parker "dies" anyway. It's like a personal flip-off from Capcom, made even worse by the fact you honestly think he's dead. Second, Parker is a really cool character and making it look like he's been killed off only to have him back is EVIL.

I wouldn't say it makes me sad so much as depressed: playing an evil character in Planescape: Torment.

I won't spoil the details for those who haven't experienced it, but I got as far as finishing the Tome of Pestilent Thought and I felt just so horrible that I stopped playing.

I don't know how much of a spoiler the first 20 minutes of The Last of Us is, but I'm going to put up a spoiler warning, just in case.

I don't think I've ever had a scene hit me as hard or as fast as the first 20 minutes of The Last of Us did. Something about it just felt so... real? It's hard to describe. It's a near-perfect piece of storytelling at the very least. I think a very key aspect of why it is so sad is that the majority of the scene is played in the perspective of Sarah. While it would have been easy to just play as Joel the whole time, and feel for him losing his daughter, I think the way they pulled it off makes the player feel more for the character. It's not a typical "oh yeah this guy tragic loss etc.". Since you, the player, are playing as Sarah, and she is shot and killed by what could have been your only hope, you, the player, feel loss for this character. You're more empathetic to the heartbreak of Joel, and it hits that much harder. I've never in my life had a game catch my attention as well as The Last of Us did.

The saddest moment for me came in Mass Effect 3:

Mordin dies!?! I couldn't believe it when he was taking the elevator ride up. I thought that we were going to swoop in at the last second and get him out of there, but he just stood there after it was done and waited for his impending demise. He was one of my favorite characters, and it's still sad to think about his death, haha. I think the part that was saddest for me was that he was singing to himself his musical number as he died. That reminded me that he actually had a past. Like, he lived an entire life, and it all came crashing to an end right then and there. I had to take a break from the game after that.

The ending of the main story of Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Red/Blue Rescue Team and Explorers of Time/Darkness/Sky, especially because the music is perfect for the sad moment.

i haven't played others PMD games so idk if they have a sad ending too.

I really didn't expect for anything that sad to come from a Borderlands game, especially not a DLC involving one of the most insane characters in the game.

I'm going to name a few since I already my top one for 30 Days of Gaming, though it's still getting a mention.

- Nearly every major plot point of Mother 3 (Hinawa's death, loss of Claus, Sunflower Fields, final fight with the Masked Man oh my GOD GOOD BYE)
- Damas' death in Jak 3
- That time I let my son in Tomodachi Life leave to travel and not have an apartment of his own BIG MISTAKE
- Crono's death in Chrono Trigger
- Zelda sleeping for a bajillion years in Skyward Sword

I know this is weird, but I find it sad when Navi leaves Link at the end of Ocarina of Time. Now at first that scene had absolutely no meaning to me... that is, until I stumbled across this theory:

"This had always bugged me as a kid. Why did Navi leave Link at the end of OoT? Given the time they'd spent together, you'd think they'd be friends, right?

Well, recently I came across a fan theory online (I can't recall where exactly) that explained this by explaining the life cycle of fairies in greater detail.

Have you ever noticed that the bottled fairies that you use disappear right after they heal you? This is because of how fairy life cycles work: certain fairies are created by guardian spirits, such as the Great Fairies and the Deku Tree, to fulfill a specific purpose, such as healing weary travelers. Once that purpose if fulfilled, the fairy disappears.

When the Deku Tree addressed Navi at the beginning of the game, she had literally just been created, the blank screen representing her transition into being. The Deku Tree created her for the purpose of assisting Link in his quest, and when Link placed the Master Sword back into the pedestal at the end of the game, that purpose was completed.

That's why Navi flew out the window and left Link behind: she couldn't bear the thought of Link seeing her die."

When you combine that with the whole 5 stages of grief/despair theme from Majora's Mask, things start to get really freakin' emotional. :(

OMG I literally forgot about Mother 3 despite posting about it a few hours ago. O_O Jeez, that entire game just ripped my heart out and shred it to pieces. T_T

Literally in Shadow of the Colossus when your horse falls off the bridge and you think its dead.... omg. Saddest scene in any video game ever.

You'd figure pixels on a screen wouldn't make me cry, but hey, they do! They really do...

There's quite a few times I've sat in front of my Nintendo DS or PSP and cried my eyes out at a sad moment. Here's the ones I can think of:

• Your character fading away at the end of PMD2. I cried. A lot. Your poor partner always breaks down as your character dissipates into nothingness, and he leaves, looks back, remaining strong for your sake, and then a couple months later he sees the sunset at the beach and finally can't take it anymore. I ran out of tears crying at this part.
• Aerith getting shiska-bobbed by Sephiroth in FFVII. The fact that her theme song still plays as you fight Jenova LIFE and keeps playing up until the end of the first disk does NOT make it any better. Even Yuffie breaks down at her death, and it's heartbreaking, as she's been the perky one up until this point.
• Angeal's suicide by cop in FFVII: Crisis Core. I was admittedly a bit frustrated at him up until Modeoheim because the guy kept freaking switching sides. One minute he helps you out, and the next... he poofs. It brings back flashbacks of Kain Freaking Highwind backstabbing you at every turn at FFIV. And then you go into a deserted place in the middle of the frozen north and you're totally alone and you get this creeping feeling something horrid is gonna happen... and Angeal shows up with Hollander calling him a perfect monster and he goes berserk and tries to get you to kill him. He was frustrating, but you see him dying and Zack breaks down for the first time, and I cried my eyes out. Even with the beach episode I was depressed.
• Zack's death in FFVII:CC. You go through an entire army in defense of your precious vegetative friend and you watch as the DMV falls apart like an old film reel. It was even worse because he had reraise applied as a carry over from when I was on my third attempt at trying to beat Sephiroth and even with that applied he was done for. I watched the poor guy slowly die, with his mind getting stuck on Aerith as he finally petered out and I cried all the way through the ending cutscene with the horrible song, all the way past the credits, all the way to the title screen and even a few minutes after I shut the PSP off. It was the SADDEST moment I've ever lived through playing a video game, and while Crisis Core is a dang good game it is still not one I could play through all that often.

And that's it. As I play more games I'll probably live through more sad moments, but those are the four that I readily remember.

Pre-recorded message of everybody you learnt to know saying good-bye and the whole "we won't forget" and looking at you floating in the sky is also really sad and got my eyes slightly watery, even though I expected it during the whole game but that prerecorded message just got to me

But explorers was the only video game to ever make me cry, it took various playthroughs until I finally was able to go through it with just watery eyes.
Anyway of to play more games I've heard will break my heart, let's see... fire emblem 4 heard this one has a good moment, time to see if it makes me incredibly sad...
