Sometime after the events of Black/White, but sometime before Black 2/White 2, the player character (Hilda/Hilbert) departs from Unova with their dragon, unfortunately meaning that they weren't able to be around to stop Ghetsis's second attempt to take over the world (but fortunately a new hero [Rosa/Nate] rises to the challenge and N comes back in time to help out).

But what were they doing the whole time? Unlike with Red in the Johto games (the only other instance of a sequel+the previous game's protagonist getting mentioned), we aren't given any sort of indication as to why the player character leaves Unova in the first place, or what they were doing while they were gone. And what about after Black2/White2? What're they doing now?

There isn't a truly canon answer to this or anything btw, it's more just to see what people's imaginations have cooked up

With these questions left behind,I think there will be BW3 on the future releases.Ghetsis can always revive Team Plasma back.Colress can be the new villain too and the little kid from Nuvema on BW2 can be the new protagonist to find Hilda/Hilbert.

Going to have to agree with The Annoying Rollout (you're right, it IS annoying). There's no doubt going to be a third game. Instead of remakes I think we're going to get Black 3 and White 3 - which will fill in all the holes left in the previous two games. What COULD happen is Black 3 would be a remake of Black 2 and then SOMETHING happens (maybe when Ghetsis freezes you) which will force you to go to the future of the region. This'll be two years later (which'll explain what happens to everyone etc) and you'll explore it like you did before but with all Pokemon over level 60 throughout the region. White 3 would be the climax of White then being forced to go back two years before Hilbert/Hilda/Nate/Rosa etc even CAME to Unova and you explore the region with Pokemon that aren't native to Unova (the fault of something upsetting the time balance idk) and find out what happened in the past. It's crazy but it's the best way to handle it and will explain what happened to all the protagonists. AND that'll mean GF can easily sell two extra games to every single person. Nobody's just gonna want one side of the story. Boom.

SO. What I think happened is that Hilbert/Hilda left to train their Pokemon. Although they got the dragon it was a close match with both N and Ghetsis, so Hilbert/Hilda went off to try and solidify their skills in preparation of a bigger threat - knowing that unless they get stronger they might not be able to take on threats in the future. ofc when all this happens in B2W2 nobody is able to reach them, and N can sense something is happening with Pokemon and thus he comes to the rescue. Hilbert and Hilda will make a return in the eventual next chapter to the Unova saga, as a more established trainer (a NPC, like Red kinda).

There is a canon answer to this, though?

    Hilda/Hilbert's Mother said:
"Welcome home, dear. Did you find the friend you were looking for? Wasn't his name something like N?"
"Huh...? Excuse me! How embarrassing! Mistaking a visitor for my own child!"
    "You're <Nate/Rosa>?"

They left to look for N... and they haven't come back... they don't know he came back, and that he wants to look for them, too...

....dammit there's always that one line I forget

I can't really speak for the protagonists but I think N spent the two year gap travelling all the regions we knew of. And after BW2, N probably went to Kalos or something after a while in Unova.
If he were to explore the regions by himself, it'd explain his change in demeanor and character. After all, he doesn't have Ghetsis to hold him back.
