The Valoran arena complex was swarming as always with coaches from various reaches of Ceriah, a precious small few of them here for something so trivial as a recruitment fair for beginners. A decent little crowd, mostly first forms considering joining a team, was gathered to watch the event in the stands behind the safety of reinforced Cerian plexiglass. Little chrome video recorders were quietly watching the contestants, but currently the screens only displayed commercials for various Cerian products.

As the matches began and the screens switched their focus to the contestants, the audience locked their eyes on the arena and chewed their snacks.

First Gym

It had been a task in itself to get Muay and Langley to swallow their pride and battle the standard tier team, but Baryon had been right. There was really no point in battling the higher tier team; the gym leader had confirmed it for them. Baryon watched the two run through Kriketune and Swoobat without too much trouble, though Muay did go down. Such was the relief after their first win that it was done that Muay and Langley even admitted Capoeirah's choice was the correct one. Baryon sent them off to his apartment ahead of him, telling them to rest up and eat whatever he had.

Eira was reading the news when the door slammed open and Baryon waltzed in. "Was partyin' with the family," he explained, despite nobody asking. "Got some hot info, coach girl. Gonna be a tourney soon. Low-level stuff, you know. Y'all are in the right range for that. Good exposure for you, too. Might get another member out of it."

Baryon slapped a flyer down in front of her and watched as Eira blinked at it. "That… sounds interesting. It says teams of three- would you be with us for it?"

He laughed. "Nah, nah, I'm a little overpowered for that stuff. Got someone that'll run with ya though. He's-- ah, there he is."

The door Baryon hadn't bothered to close filled with the bulk of a Vigoroth. "BARYON!" he roared, "You gave me the wrong unit number. Again."

Baryon lifted his arms, clearly expressing the sentiment of 'what you gonna do about it?' "You could actually bother to learn where I live someday, ya know."

The Vigoroth dismissed that idea with an offhand wave. "So where's this coach?"

"Right here."

"What, the Buneary?"

"Excuse me; my name is Capoeirah," she responded coldly.

"Ah- sorry, sorry. My bad. I'm Visi. Uh. I didn't expect such a… small… coach."

"My size is irrelevant."

Visi put up his hands in surrender. "Yeah, yeah, that's fair. Sorry. Anyway. I haven't found a team to run with for this tourney yet, and Baryon told me you were lookin' for a third. I've been in a bunch of tourneys, just haven't found the right team to stay with yet. Think of it as a trial run for me, with you. All right?"

As brash as the man was, he looked like a brawler. Eira knew her team was shaping up to be fairly physically focused, but recruiting was not easy and she'd take what she could get.

"I'll have you for the tourney, Visi. We'll see how you fit with us after that."

After the Tourney

They danced throughout. Ever-moving, always graceful. Even the heavy one; even the coach. Light on their toes- bouncing, ducking, dodging, sweeping... dancing to a rhythm no-one else could hear. The Banette danced in time with them as she watched. Playful, energetic, dangerous. Beautiful. Over too quickly.

The Buneary halted as she stepped from the shadows. "Hello- do you need something?"

She pulled a chalk from the pouch around her waist. Dance, she wrote on the concrete beneath them.

"Oh! You liked our style? Thank you. I was raised to battle that way."

"Really? Well- yes, of course! We're always looking for new team members. What's your name?"

The Second Gym

"I'm sorry, Saque. Pursuit isn't... I've never been good at dealing with it. I expected it; I gave you that berry, but... I should have let Muay finish the Ivysaur. Maybe? I... don't know. If he had gone in and it had hit him, I don't think he'd have been able to finish the Tauros. Was sacrificing you the only way? I'm sorry. I'm not very good at this."

Saque tilted her head quizzically.

"I was an athlete before. And then... something happened. I haven't been a coach very long, but... we never do as well as I want."

Chalk appeared in hand, pink to show on the white wall.

High expectations.

"Do you think so?"

Young athletes. Young coach. Saque shrugged.

"You think it's to be expected?" Nod. "Baryon and Visi though, they're experienced. I mean, Baryon is. Visi hasn't been on a team before, but he battles. I... now that I think of it, Baryon hasn't battled for me yet. I guess everyone is less experienced than I think they are. I just think there's... more I could be doing."

Coach. Dance.

"Is that really working, though? Muay and Langley know a lot of what I know. Baryon and Visi are picking it up quickly for such big guys. And you... your style is unique but fantastic. I don't know if I could even coach you well."

Structure. Experience.

"Oh. If that's what helps you, I'll do my best to work with that. Maybe... I guess I'll talk to the others. I don't even really know what they want from me. I... I should really know that. Thanks, Saque."

Interlude

The sounds of Visi and Baryon sparring were drowned out by both their own trash-talking and the peanut gallery of Muay and Langley.

"Damn, Baryon, you slow as hell today!"

"Still faster'n you, steel girl! Hah, Visi, what t' hell was that supposed to be?"

"Booooo, learn to punch!"

"Not all of us have Iron Fist!"

"Iron Fist doesn't help if you straight up miss!

Eira snickered and Saque tilted her head. "You didn't hear anything." Saque mimed zipping her mouth closed, then laughed her silent laugh.

Such fun people she had found. People willing to work with her, learn from her, incorporate her own styles and lessons into their established techniques. People willing to interact as more than just coworkers. Bonding with her team, her team bonding with each other- what a wonderful, beautiful experience.

Muay and Langley cheered as Baryon flipped Visi over his shoulder, slammed him into the ground, and stood on him while pulling victory poses.

"Congratulations, Baryon!" Eira called, strolling into the ring. "Your footwork's lacking, though."

"I'm heavy, Coach. Can't go too fast."

"It isn't all about speed; form is important as well. Don't think I didn't see you stumble over your own tail."

"Hey, things happen."

"Watch my feet. All of you, please. Baryon, square up."

Eira danced, Baryon following. She matched his pace, tapping here, there, bouncing, weaving, ducking. A jab into his swishing tail- "Owww, coach! Don't Ice Punch me!"

"Uh? Sorry I- didn't mean to?"

Eira looked at her paws in confusion. Snow sprinkled from them for a moment, then her vision was obscured by steam as they heated up for Fire Punch. Electricity darted down to her elbows, discharging into the air before Eira's paws glowed with the light of three elements at once. It spread down her arms, engulfing her body in light and her form began to shift. The white energy increased, pulsed, and exploded out of her, throwing Baryon to the ground.

The rest of the team rushed over as soon as their eyesight returned. Visi dragged Baryon to his feet and joined the others, hovering worriedly around their dazed coach.

"Eira-- Eira, are you okay?"

She looked at her paws once more, prodding the fur that now covered her wrists. She put them to her head and ran them down the new length of her ears. "I... evolved?"

"Pretty dramatically, yeah," laughed Langley nervously.

"How... unexpected," Eira said, and blacked out.
