The disturbing world of Pokémon

We all know Pokémon don't we? You know, that franchise with a world full of soul-stealing monsters, horrifying ghosts, evil gangs and NPCs that will stop at nothing to hunt you down and fight?

Then again, maybe not... The Pokémon is darker than you think and I'm here to share with you the darker side of the Pokémon world. Proceed with caution... Other members are welcome to share things they too find creepy. I shall list items by categories

Pokédex entries and their implications:

We all remember him don't we? The product of using a mysterious disc on Porygon 2? The disc that was NOT approved by Silph Co.? The thing's practically a glitch Pokémon. Don't believe me? just look at the Pokedex entry: "Porygon-Z can sometimes be seen shaking rapidly for a short time. Whether this is intentional or a glitch is unknown." Feeling like sleeping tonight? Best not think what's happening to the poor thing's mind as it's programming gets messed up.

Spoiler:

Learning that Cubone's headgear is the skull of its dead mother is illogical, but nevertheless a very disturbing experience. Now, given the events of the Tower, however, it seems likely that the implication is that that particular Cubone took up its mother's skull and femur for vengeance... Which is totally badass once you think about it...

Now let that sink in... How is that possible? Out of instinct, a Cubone will decapitate its dead mother's head, skin it, remove the innards, clean it, and then wear the skull as a mask. And if that wasn't creepy enough, it then spends its nights sobbing while still wearing its mother's skull. Vengeance or not, that's leaving Pokémon and going into Leatherface territory. No wonder Cubone is known as the Lonely Pokémon.

Spoiler:

It's a four-foot-tall-desert-crawling-cactus-turned-scarecrow that apparently stalks travellers (not Pokémon, not people, just "travellers") until they can no longer move. And then it drains them dry.

Opening the following will spoil some important plot points for Black and White:

Holy crap, Ghetsis. That guy is really dark for a Pokemon game... Seriously, he mentally abused and neglected his only son (as far as we know; things get even worse if you think about Ghetsis abusing even more offspring) for his own selfish gain, raising him as his own easily-manipulated pawn for his whole global domination scheme, and he has the nerve to call N a freak without a human heart. Whoa. To make matters worse, Ryoku of the Seven Sages doubts that N is actually Ghetsis's son, leading to some rather creepy implications of kidnapping.

Wow! I didn't notice this until you pointed it out. And the Cacturne thing? Creeeepy!

Obviously, the creators didn't go into detail into those parts of the franchise because they aimed Pokemon for the little children (I suppose around 8 to 12 years old or even younger idk). You wouldn't see little children deciphering those, eh? Unless you tell them, of course. :/

Yamask's Pokedex entry is not really disturbing. I mean, when you look at the mask its not really skeletony (like Cubone's) or ewwy (wtf is ewwy). It's kind of sad when you think about it tbh. But it also gives you something: sometimes, humans will become Pokemon when they die. :o

And heck Cofagrigus' 'dex entry says it eats human souls. The other one is about it's made from solid gold.

Well, I suppose... but there's also the Litwick line.

Litwick:
Black: Litwick shines a light that absorbs the life energy of people and Pokémon, which becomes the fuel that it burns.
White: While shining a light and pretending to be a guide, it leeches off the life force of any who follow it.

Lampent:
Black: This ominous Pokémon is feared. Through cities it wanders, searching for the spirits of the fallen.
White: It arrives near the moment of death and steals spirit from the body.

Chandelure:
Black: It absorbs a spirit, which it then burns. By waving the flames on its arms, it puts its foes into a hypnotic trance.
White: Being consumed in Chandelure's flame burns up the spirit, leaving the body behind.

All of these Pokedex entries though, when we see the said Pokemon in the anime, why doesn't it all happen?

Anyways, I'm impressed no one has mention Hypno (Hypno's Lullaby, anyone?).

It did happen in the anime. Well... the Desumasu ep wan't as horrifyingly sad as it could have been, but when you think about it a bit...

The Litwick episode was basically all about how the Pokemon were sucking away life force. And is was hella creepy.

Sapphire: Duskull wanders lost among the deep darkness of midnight. There is an oft-told admonishment given to misbehaving children that this Pokémon will spirit away bad children who earn scoldings from their mothers.

poor kids...it makes one want to behave...

Ruby:Shedinja's hard body doesn't move - not even a twitch. In fact, its body appears to be merely a hollow shell. It is believed that this Pokémon will steal the spirit of anyone peering into its hollow body from its back.

Shedinja is especially creepy...it just comes out of no where...and it doesn't move!

HG&SS: This feared Pokemon is said to travel to worlds unknown. Some even believe that it takes lost spirits along with it.

HG&SS: It chases people and Pokemon from its territory by causing them to experience deep, nightmarish slumbers

More disturbing things

It's good to see many of you sharing these entries. And now, for another update. This time, I'll go into detail for some of the Pokémon already mentioned by other members aside from adding a few new ones.

Spoiler:

It is said that Shedinja will steal your soul if you look in its back. Guess what you're looking at whenever you send it into battle.

Also, if you compare it to the Ninjask that crawled out of it, they'll have identical natures and the "Met at..." data will be the same between them for both time and level. Does it mean that it's truly one Pokémon ripped in two, or that the husk was a sentient skin just waiting to be shed? Additionally, because its "evolution" isn't announced, it's possible to have a Shedinja in your party and not realize it's there.

Spoiler:

It's ability itself is already disturbing, being able to send you into a perpetual nightmare. The worst part is that Darkrai doesn't even do it on purpose! It's a defence mechanism. He doesn't want to do this, but he can't control the power. He can't power it down, decide when it happens, cut it off, or redirect it. If he's anywhere near someone who's asleep, it happens, and there's nothing he can do about it.

Imagine if you had trouble sleeping and didn't know about Darkrai's ability and asks it to put you to sleep. You'll be trapped in a never ending nightmare and your only chance is to wake up. But your Darkrai is ever so loyal and decides to stay by your side until you wake up. Good luck trying to wake up

Ah yes, the "pedophiles" of the Pokémon world. They lead children away by hypnotizing them and they are never seen again... Anyone ever wondered what happened to said children?

Oh, allow me to bring up one of the Pokédex entries: If your nose becomes itchy while you are sleeping, it's a sure sign that one of these Pokémon is standing above your pillow and trying to eat your dream through your nostrils.

Imagine you're sleeping oh so soundly, your eyes are snapped shut but your nose is itching. At first you brush this off and sleep. Then you feel like having a midnight snack so you open your eyes and what do you see? A fat, tapir-like thing standing next to your bed with a slasher smile while it's eating your dreams

And one more thing — if this Pokémon kidnaps you, you're not getting away. Hypno's ability is Insomnia. It never sleeps. Oh, actually, it also has Forewarn. Which MAY mean it knows when you're about to try to escape.

Cofagrigus, is already creepy enough considering that it's basically a coffin (or sarcophagus) with a malicious grin on its face and ghostly hands peeking out of the inside of the coffin, but then there's its ability, Mummy. If a Pokémon physically hits it, it will have its ability changed to Mummy. If another Pokémon hits that Pokémon, they have their ability changed to Mummy. Poképandemic, or zombie apocalypse?

A Pokédex entry for Yamask: "Each of them carries a mask that used to be its face when it was human. Sometimes they look at it and cry."

Read that again, "...that used to be its face when it was human". You're not just dealing with a Pokémon, it's actually a real ghost of a long dead human. It's stated in the White dex entry that Yamask remembers everything from when it was a human. So, thousands of a years ago, a human died and its ghost remains. It remembers everything about its old wife/husband and children and the life it used to have, and now it's cursed to forever wallow in grief and misery. Then some kid comes along and captures it in a Pokéball. Good job player, you just caught the ghost of a real human being and are now using it as a battle slave. So you have a centuries old person who's forced to fight and take down Pokémon, fully aware of its old life and memories. And that's not all. It too has the ability Mummy. so it's not content to just grieve by itself, it turns other Pokémon into a mummy just by the mere touch. And then it evolves into a sarcophagus that eats grave robbers. Really Game Freak? Can't you think of anything creepier?

Oh yeah, Yamask can breed... If you're one of those people who breed Yamask to get good IVs or Natures, congrats, you just doomed many humans on Earth just to get a stronger Yamask.

Another take would be that they could be born from the spirits of all the people who died since the beginning of times. There must be, what? Some billions? I suppose you won't need all that to have the one you need, right?

Once you think about it, now it means that we're dragging souls out of Heaven or Hell. The former means that it's ripped away from eternal bliss to be enslaved, and the latter means that it's ripped away from eternal torment to take its rage out on the world. Wonderful...

And then there's the more humorous take

Based on an actual prehistoric giant dragonfly, it is over six feet long, can dislodge trees when taking off, is capable of lifting a grown human off the ground, can shred its enemies' internal organs from the shockwaves created by its wings, and is known for biting apart foes midflight. The disturbing thing is... Dragonflies actually do that last bit in real life. Seriously.

Sure, you may think Gastly the floating, adorably goofy-looking ghost head is cute, right? Wait until you realize that it's over 4 feet tall! And since it's made of gas, it can "sneak into any place it desires", according to several Pokédex entries. Imagine waking up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom and seeing this giant face floating right in front of you. Of course, it may be the last thing you see, since it can "envelop an opponent of any size and cause suffocation".

For Haunter, according to it's Pokédex entries,if a Haunter licks a person, the person starts shaking uncontrollably until death eventually comes. It can also pass through any obstacle. And to make things worse, it hides in the dark, planning to take the life of the next living thing that wanders close by. So basically, Haunter kills you, slowly, just because you're alive. And it can get you, no matter where you are.

For Gengar's case, it's Pokédex entry stated that Gengar, who appears at every full moon and scares people by pretending to be their shadow. Now consider Gengar's Pokédex weight and height. In HG/SS at least, it's about the same as the male protagonist. Now consider the fact that it can copy people's shadows. So, this ghostly creature who can shadow your exact movements, take your shape, and is about your size and weight is following you around. AND logically you can't escape as, like they say, "you can't outrun your own shadow..." Body snatchers anyone?

Forgive me if you don't want to be corrected but Cofagrigus' ability, which you just mentioned how it works, is not really a pandemic or an apocalyptic scene. It just changes the ability of the Pokemon, not make it drastically sick or change its appearance. Just change the ability. But it'll go away if you take back the 'infected' Pokemon to its Pokeball.

And you forgot the fact that Cofagrigus' 'dex entry tells that it eats human's souls. :/

Some part are bit too exaggerated like say, the Yanmega one.

These darker element is the reason why one should need at least one pokemon when they are go on travelling. Cities, Towns, and Villages also need a protector. Maybe this is another use for Gym. Thankfully, those dangerous thing should be rare in the wild, but this rule only apply for darker universe that maybe used for a shounen manga instead of the game. Just saying

Oh, and I forgot to mention. That's why trainers train Pokemon, to make them not do those things that you mention. Unless those Pokemon are left in the wild, then obviously they would still do those stuff that you mentioned.
