  • The male character looks like a hybrid of Hilbert, Nate and Elio (Sun). And he dresses similar to Nate too, the shorts and leggings, however, Ultra SuMo's player character is wearing shorts similar to Hau.

And I don't think it's the same player character from SuMo, the eyebrows are different.

  • I mean, it's no easy feat to beat Brendan's (Pokemon Emerald protag) design.

I admit it was the most standout-worthy male protagonist design, so it is sad to see that the male protagonist designs are getting more and more bland with every new generation. Since B/W, they have always stuck to blue being prominent in the outfit and that feels lazy.

I thought the male designs peaked with Hilbert, then Nate was okay (I actually kinda liked his ridiculous hair), Calem I hated but he grew on me, but Brendan's redesign was meh, and Sun was just so boring. And now he looks even younger than before and I really don't like it, but thank god for trainer customization.

For me the male designs would go Hilbert > RSE Brendan > Ethan > Red > Nate > Calem > ORAS Brendan > Lucas >>>>>>>> Sun >>>> Ultra Sun.

  • Not sure what to make of our characters. Need to know more.

Unfortunately when it comes to the protagonists, we never really get to know them until after the games come out. I am still hoping an upcoming trailer may reveal their official artwork though.

The only way i consider customizing my character is if they had type specialists clothes like Dragon. But for now, the feature is useless to me.

They just seem to be the Sun and Moon Protagonist with better customization and hairs. Probably changed the female design because of people laughing at the chicken hat.

Here's a question we've not asked yet: what are their default names going to be? I'd laugh forever if they were called "Ultra" and just left at that, or if that was even an option. They can't be "Sun" and "Moon" again, can they?

I'd favour Diana for the girl, personally. Apollo seems a little too obvious and cliche for the guy, though...that said, they don't even have to have names that fit the theme. They could be literally anything. What do they look like to people?

  • I think that if these protagonists are entirely new and appear in the Pokemon Adventures manga, I could see their names being U-Sun and U-Moon, kinda like "Lack-Two" and "Whi-Two" for Nate and Rosa's Pokemon Adventures counterparts.

I do hope the opposite-gendered protagonist does appear as an NPC this time around, since that literally seems to be what it comes down to if the player characters get canon names or not. S/M's player characters never had a canon name due to the other one not appearing, similar to FR/LG.

    ...wait, seriously? Oh man. What naming sense. xD;

That said...if these games are set in an alternate world, then "Ult-Sun" and "Ult-Moon" isn't too farfetched...at least for the manga. It's a clever little play on words. Like the whole twist in the title for Metroid: Other M, only hopefully not as disastrous and cringeworthy as that.

But I'd pray for some better default names in the games, at least. Sun and Moon themselves had unusued names IIRC - Kai and Lana, I think? - so maybe those could be the names of their counterparts?

I think those were indeed their unused names. Had those names been used they would have had to change the female protagonist's name in the English version due to Lana already being the name of a Trial Captain.

...oh yeah, I forgot about Lana. Scratch that idea, then...unless they take Lana out, which I can't see them doing since (I think) she's one of the more popular Trial Captains...and it wouldn't make sense to remove her even if she wasn't in that position any more. Unless SM had an entirely new cast. Which is unlikely. So yeah. Maybe not Lana for the girl.

Although I still like Diana. I might even call her that.

I'm with you. Lana is a Trial Captain and they are popular characters so I just can't see her being written out.

  • I find it really weird how Sun and Moon never got "official" names. Even Hilda and Hilbert got them! We did get Elio and Selene as names that Gamefreak used to advertise battle royal, but then we never saw those names again. Anyways I'm pretty sure these protags are the same ones as before, and we'll get a RS/DP situation in the manga where the protagonists just get new clothes eventually.

They could do that, and the manga could throw them in some kind of alternative dimension through... Hoopa? It's possible.

I really like the female protag's hairstyle!

  • I find these designs as a big improvement from the rather plainish and vanilla designs that the original alola portags had. They look a lot more vibrant, colorful, and eye catching.

  • Can we really be sure those are their default outfits for US/UM and not a way to show off the new customizable clothes available to wear?
