Do you think that the media was better in the past compared to what it's like now?

Music, film, magazines, TV, whatever. Do you prefer it's past or present?

I personally think post-2000 media is better than pre-2000

Each era has its moments, of course, but I'd have to agree that post-2000 is better than pre-2000. The TV shows now are a lot darker and more hard-hitting, which I really love, and the same can be said for movies. As for magazines, I think those have declined since 2000 since the paparazzi got hold of camera phones and are spamming us all with images of celebrities doing things nobody really cares about and calling it scandal.

But overall, I definitely prefer the present.

I prefer pre-2000 media, especially music and movies/television shows. Most notably, comedies. I really just don't find modern "comedies" to be that funny at all. Like, there's totally a different sense of humor in them now.

Although with books, I'm kind of on the fence. Newer books can at times be a lot better, they're more up-to-date and a lot of times more interesting, but then again old books are good too.

As much as I do love music from before the 21st century, just under two thirds of my music library is from 2000 or later. I think it's more just the diversity of music that does it - with so many mediums to share music and so many musicians being able to record their own bands without spending a fortune on a studio nowadays it's easier for bands to get heard. With more bands to hear there's bound to be more good music available (not to mention all these new bands can improve on music made in the past). Of course, there's never going to be another band that can capture what the Jimi Hendrix Experience had, or who can be as innovative as Sonic Youth were, but nowadays there are so many good artists and such diverse styles of music that you can't go wrong.

As for comedy, I prefer post-2000 comedy. There are many funny pre-2000 shows and my god there are so many terrible post-2000 "comedies" (read Modern Family), but stuff like Flight of the Conchords and all that I find a lot more entertaining than the 10% of Monty Python sketches that were actually good.

I'm not really a movie buff.. I've probably seen more post-2000 movies just because of going to the cinema, but yeah. I'd say post-2000 movies just because of superior special-effects, different styles of filming (like shaking cameras etc.) and more engaging storylines (my top five favourite movies are all post 2000).

So yeah, I'd say post-2000 is, in my opinion, definitely the superior.

When it comes to music, I think that pre-2000 music is better than it is now. I'm only speaking from a mainstream perspective, but when you compare the music that's being played on the radio today to the music of the past... The majority of the pre-2000 music is better than the music of today (especially the Black Eyed Peas oh my god can they all go die in a plane crash or something plz).
As for movies, I'm not quite sure. I'll have to edit this.

Regarding music, I don't think anyone can authoritatively say that a certain era of music is "better" than another but the music of the 70s and 80s appeals to me personally more.

Looking at Cartoon Network now I'm inclined to say so. Kids are meant to be watching that channel and the adult themes they show during daytime, not particularly cool :/

It terms of entertainment though things might be better as they relate to now. Its all about time period I guess.

In general, I'd say I prefer the past.

Movies: "Statistically" speaking, couple movies in late 30s-early 40s have had some of the highest-grossing-films (which today would be around $5-6bil), but I still like the newer movies better.

TV shows: Jersey shore (pretty much sums up this category)

Music: Heavy metal >>>>>>>>>>>> pop (basically comparing AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, etc. to the almighty bieber and rebecca black). Not saying that all musics now are crap, but they're not as good as those in the 80s and such.

The nostalgia factor is big to me. Like I really miss shows from my childhood such as Pokemon, That's So Raven, Digimon and Rugrats and I'm sorry but shows for children today just can't compete. Miley Cyrus.

Though I must admit, today has alot more shows which are better for older audiences, like Glee, Desperate Housewives, Project Runway and Body of Proof.

Having a look at my Top 10 film list, three are from the last decade, two are from the 90s, another two from the 70s, another two from the 60s and one from the 40s. Going down further (YES MY TOP TEN LIST GOES ON FOREVER!), most of them tend to be from the 60s-70s... so I guess my film taste skews older rather than newer. I guess that makes sense, to a certain degree.

Looking at my favourite TV shows, on the other hand, it appears that my taste in this area skews a lot more modern. About 80% of the shows listed in the Televison section on my Facebook account were created post-2000. There's probably some confirmation bias in there somewhere, but I guess I like newer stuff more than old, on the whole.

My music taste is completely off the charts... no point going down that rabbit hole. I guess I'm not too fussed when the music comes from, as long as it's 'good' in some way.

I generally hate most music that was created past 1995, especially past 2005. I don't hate ALL of it but a good amount of it.

I dunno though because most of the stuff that survived previous eras were the only ones worth listening to so its probably the same thing lol

Most other things I'm pretty indifferent on, I generally regard the quality of the media by itself than necessarily the time it came from. Music seems to be the exception for me though... blah

music, movies, tv show just dont have any heart or soul, its all commercialised.

I also love movies from the 20s to the 40s those are the most realest characters every protrayed especially women, they were strong and bold, and their life was revovled around getting a guy to date them(like so many movies today) and their bodies werent objectifed like today :( personally i feel the 2000s made everyone such a stereyo type especially towords women in the media.

How can you compare heavy metal music from the 80's-90's-00's to pop music today? I mean, if you were comparing heavy metal of today with heavy metal of the past, then that'd be a logical comparison, but pop is nothing like heavy metal so I would think that they were incomparable.

TV is the only thing I have anything to say about since I generally listen to pretty much anything, and read whatever fiction my heart is content with, regardless of the year produced. Shows were of a much higher quality in the past than they are today.

Musically, I'm pretty open to music from any decade so I can't say that one decade is better than another or that I prefer 80's music to 00's music and so on. I don't like when people generalize music of today as "pop trash" or saying they're all uncreative or untalented because it's not true at all. I feel like there are musicians in this decade that are creative and talented that I guess go unnoticed because of the so-called "mainstream" artists.

TV-wise, I'm still a sucker for '90s and early '00s shows. Total nostalgia factor, for sure. Hey Arnold, All That, Lizzie McGuire, the first seasons of Pokémon and Digimon, Rugrats - those were my shows, man. Those were my shows. Buuuut I like some stuff from now, too! I guess I'm kind of all over the board with my tastes.

I'm not much of a film buff so I can't comment on movies.

And Ed, Edd, n Eddy. Loved that show to death. Even SpongeBob is good, but in my opinion it just wasn't as good as before.

A lot of my favorite movies are from the 90's, but I prefer music post-2000. Definitely more variety, but a few artists were better when they weren't all so pop influenced, especially artists like the Black Eyed Peas and Kanye West to name a few.

Well, let's analyze this in sections, shall we? Also, remember, it's my opinion.

Literature
Mostly, I dislike being unable to relate to a character when a book is sort of outdated. For example, when a book is purposefully set in an era the reader is supposed to recogonize as outdated, it's okay (and sometimes quite nice actually) but I do not stand reading books that are old yet are supposed to apeal to modern audiences (or what was modern back then).

TV
The most modern possible in heartbeat. I want to puke in a bag whenever I have to see anything from before the 95's, and even in that situation there are very few good 95's shows (other than Friends, which is awesome). I personally think crap like Rugrats is garbage, but cartoons from this year aren't exactly amazing either (but at least it's an improvement).

Music
Some music influenced by 20th century music is okay, but other than that nothing specifically from that century is good. I like classical music though. (Of course, today's music isn't exactly perfect either. I am going to strangle Rebbeca Black if I ever meet her. But if you search, there are a few gems.)

Films
Like TV, watching anything old is the ultimate form of torture.

Agreed. I miss those shows so much, but luckily there's Boomerang...

Anyway, as far as TV goes, I prefer pre-2000. Especially movies, though there are some exceptions.

Music, I actually like both pre and post-2000. Good music is still being made and is possible to find.

Hmmm, well, I do have a soft spot for the 90s (mainly because of childhood and because I thought the programming was awesome), but there are good things to any era! The media and the way it's handled now is a little ridiculous, but we also have more access to knowledge. I love how things are run now, but I guess for celebrities, it kinda sucks. XD
