  • For the same reason why used Parasect: I never used it much, but i want to try this thing out. Annoying: Bug Bite requires a Heartscale, if i don't get any, i've to go with stuff like Leech Life or Return. If it's too weak, a Scyther, Pinsir or Heracross will take its place.

You won't need a Heart Scale, you'll need to level up Caterpie to level 15.

  • Damn, i mixed the sprites up, what i gave the Butterfree sprite was meant to be Ariados, what i gave the Ariados sprite was meant to be Butterfree.

And i mixed the versions up as well, Caterpie and Spinarak are both Heart Gold, not Soul Silver exclusives (well, theres Caterpie in Soul Silver as well i think, but since it takes quite long to get to the Bug Catching Contest, i'll go with Heart Gold)

My HM Slaves will be Totodile, Geodude and a random Flying type.

Oh. And relooking, yes, you CAN get Yanmega pre-national dex, it was one of 5 pokemon added. The other four were the other move evos.

    Huh?

Anyway, I'm having some problems with my laptop, so I don't know when, if ever, I'm going to get to finish this challenge. I'll try to though, I really want to kick Gardenia's ass some day....

  • Update:

Beat the rocket HQ in mahogny
Defeated Pryce, wich went pretty good until he sent out his Dewgong witch kept using rest + sleep talk, draining my PP until i had to use an Ether.
Eventually got lucky with a crit and won.
    Defeated Jasmine
Went to ruins of Alph and caught my final team member: Natu!
    Named Natu "Natee"
Beat team rocket + rival in Goldenrod with Exp.Share on Natee

  • Oddly enough, I have already done almost identically this of my own accord. I have run monotype Ghost ever since I used a Haunter to solo every gym in Yellow followed by the Elite Four. Been years since then. I remember abusing Hypnosis and Dream Eater a lot. Crystal, Emerald, and Platinum have all fallen the same. My Ghost team has more than one member now, though.

  • I finally got a running and halfway translated HG Rom now. Started a new game, named self Gold. Chose Totodile, beat rival, who i named Silvr (version names again, how creative), went looking for a timid or modest Caterpie, and found a modest one quickly, named it Pie (i wonder if Caterpie tastes as good as a real pie...). Adamant Spinarak is a lot rarer, after dozens of mostly modest, rash and bold Spinaraks i have a jolly now, Ariados' speed might not even be worth to be called mediocre, but at least jolly doesn't lower any stats i need, so i'll take this one. Named it Eeek!. Currently grinding.

Update: I just failed on my first attempt against Falkner, even though i got some Confuhax against Pidgeotto. Should've trained Pie one more level before, Sleep Powder would have made everything easier.

    Team:
    Ultimate Monotype Challenge

    Pie / Butterfree f Lv. 11 @ /
    Modest Nature / Compoundeyes
    - Tackle
    - String Shot
    - Harden
    - Confusion
Of course timid would have been a lot better for a sleep inducer, but the first Caterpie i caught was modest, and i'm a lazy person, so i kept it. So Yanmega is in the game? I wanted to use Butterfree this time more than just for the very first parts of the game, but that's really tempting me do drop Butterfree again...
    Ultimate Monotype Challenge

    Eeek! / Spinarak m Lv. 11 @ /
    Jolly Nature / Swarm
    - Poison Sting
    - String Shot
    - Scary Face
    - Constrict
Again, the worse nature and even the worse ability (Morty's Dream Eater Gengar will screw me over), but w/e...
Oh, and look at this, a screenshot showing one of my dozens of previous Spinaraks (which doesn't exist any more now because i always resetted when i ran out of Pokeballs)
    Ultimate Monotype Challenge

Somewhat of a clown, but serious nature... wtf?

Why don't you use Butterfree and Yanmega? I know they're both the exact same type, but they can fill different roles - Butterfree as a status inducer, Yanmega as a special sweeper.

My laptop seems to be working now, and my Magikarp finally evolved! Yay! I've got kinda attached to the stupid thing now, I might drop Lumineon... we'll see. I'll try Gardenia again right after I finish the essay I'm supposed to be writing now.

  • I kind of went absent after signing up for this, but I did finish the Kanto challenge. However, I would like to be removed from the list if that's okay. My Silver messed up, and it's probably not going to ever be fixed, so I won't be able to finish it, even if I do Hoenn and Sinnoh before it. Sorry for any trouble or annoyance.

  • Update!

I went to Ecruteak city, then to Olivine, without doing anything. Got my Good rod and caught a Chinchou!
Then I went back to Ecruteak, beat the Kimono dancers, beat my rival, beat the gym leader easily with Croconaw's Bite.
Then I went to Mahogany town, to the Lake of Rage and caught the red Gyarados.
Did the team rocket stuff. Chinchou evolved.
Tully called for a Water stone.
    Evolved Eevee.
Beat Pryce easily with Spark and Surf from Lanturn.

    Team:
    Lanturn lvl 29
    Spark
    Surf
    Thunder Wave
    Flash

    Croconaw lvl 29
    Bite
    Surf
    Ice Punch
    Cut

    Vaporeon lvl 30
    Surf
    Headbutt
    Bite
    Attract

    Gyarados lvl 31
    Strenght
    Bite
    Dragon Rage
    Surf

Going to have a slave for Waterfall maybe.

  • Pure stat inducers are more hindering than useful in-game imo, since they're a real pain to train. And theres one advantage Butterfree has over Yanmega or Venomoth: I can get Bug Buzz before the Elite 4, and i'll need that move. And Venomoth already played a major role in Yellow, and Yanmega will play a major role in Platinum, but Butterfree is awesome, so it deserves to get a major role in at least one game too, i wanna try to have each bug at least one time as a teammember
(which probably means that Beedrill is getting the short end of the stick now, i'm not going to use it here, Ariados had that place, and later on there's no more Beedrill...)

Trained to level 12. Beat Falkner, he was easy with Sleep Powder. Went down to Azalea. Beat Rockets, beat Bugsy (again, easy. Pie's Gust destroyed his/her team. Why does Bugsy start off with scyther now btw?) Beat rival, who was easy as well. Did the Farfetch'd quest. Togepi hatched somewhere there. Reached Goldenrod. Got a Bicycle and Kenya the Spearow (at leat that was the way it was called in GSC), which is at level 20 now. Bought a sassy Abra. Caught a Pineco (named "Forry", which is extremely creative =D), instantly got the right nature thanks to Synchronisize. Beat some trainers i skipped before with it.

    Team:
    Ultimate Monotype Challenge

    Pie / Butterfree f Lv. 20 @ /
    Modest Nature / Compoundeyes
    - Gust
    - Supersonic
    - Sleep Powder
    - Confusion
Even with Compoundeyes, Supersonic still seems to be about as accurate as Fissure...
    Ultimate Monotype Challenge

    Eeek! / Spinarak m Lv. 20 @ /
    Jolly Nature / Swarm
    - Poison Sting
    - Night Shade
    - Shadow Sneak
    - Leech Life
Usually Poison Sting poisons maybe on each 3rd hit, but against Silvr's Bayleef, i used it like 10 times (it spammed Reflect and Synthesis, so it survived that for quite a time) and still no Poison, which was my only reason to keep Poison Sting and delete Scary Face...
    Ultimate Monotype Challenge

    Forry / Pineco f Lv. 12 @ /
    Sassy Nature / Sturdy
    - Take Down
    - Protect
    - Selfdestruct
    - Bug Bite
Protect is mostly useless ingame, but i plan to prevent Miltank from sweeping by using Protect each 2nd round, so Rollout will never get more than 30 Power (60 because i'm weak to it). I'll see if that works

    HM Slaves:
:t158: Lv. 6 (Scratch, Leer, Water Gun, Cut)
:t074: Lv. 3 (Tackle, Defense Curl, Headbutt)
:t021: Lv. 20 (Leer, Fury Attack, Pursuit, Aerial Ace)

Yeah, I see your point with Yanmega, I don't like to re-use the same Pokemon, that's why I've decided to drop Gyarados. But another point, against Miltank why not just Selfdestruct in its face? I tried a GSC monotype with Bug a while back, and Exploding Pineco (or was it Forretress?) did the job pretty well I remember.

Anyway, I've finally defeated Gardenia! Hooray! The witch is dead! Let me give you a run-down of our epic battle.

Her Turtwig had no chance against my lvl. 23 Gyarados. Bite, flinchax, Bite, end of Twiggy. I used Bite on Cherrim and did just under half, she tried to protect herself with Safegaurd, but it was too no avail as Dragon Rage took it down. Roserade put up more of a fight, but two Dragon Rages saw to the end of her.

Onwards to the Galactic building! I'll train up Shellos and Buizel now, Gyarados can sit with Bibarel at the end of my party for back-up. Maybe I'll train him a little until I get Tentacool, Finneon and Remoraid.

No, you can't have it because it says No Legends, it does not say no Ubers.

    here's my second Sinnoh entry:

-went back to Jubilife City and spoke with Looker
-helped Lucas defeating the Galactic Grunts
-got to Flaroma Town and seen the crying girl
-defeated the Grunt in front of the Windworks
-went back to Flaroma Meadow and defeated 2 Galactic Grunts
-went back to the Windworks and defeated the Galactic "Leader"
-went throught the forest escorting the girl with Chansey
    -got to Eterna City
-went to the statue and met Cynthia
-got HM1Cut and tought it to Grotle
    -my battle against Gardenia:

    Spoiler:

    Here's my team now:

  • I finally beat Whitney now, it was the first attempt, but all the stuff to do around Goldenrod took me quite a while, since the game really likes to freeze.

The battle was pretty epic, so here's the log:

    Spoiler:

Strange that Miltank didn't use Rollout much, but i can't complain about that

    Team: (only some minor changes)
    Ultimate Monotype Challenge

    Pie / Butterfree f Lv. 22 @ /
    Modest Nature / Compoundeyes
    - Gust
    - Supersonic
    - Sleep Powder
    - Confusion
Even Supersonic didn't miss a single time against Whitney, Compoundeyes does really help
    Ultimate Monotype Challenge

    Eeek! / Ariados m Lv. 22 @ /
    Jolly Nature / Swarm
    - Poison Sting
    - Night Shade
    - Shadow Sneak
    - Dig
Not sure whether it was clever to delete Leech Life that early, but Poison Sting did really help me against Miltank, and Night Shade is my best attacking move (or at least it was before i had Dig) and i need Shadow Sneak against Morty if i don't get Sucker Punch till then
    Ultimate Monotype Challenge

    Forry / Pineco f Lv. 21 @ Quick Claw
    Sassy Nature / Sturdy
    - Take Down
    - Protect
    - Selfdestruct
    - Bug Bite
Could have defeated Miltank, if i would have decided to selfdestruct a bit earlier. but i wanted to weaken it first, so i could be sure to get the KO...

    HM Slaves:
:t158: Lv. 6 (Scratch, Leer, Water Gun, Cut)

  • Little updating.

Went up the lighthouse and I got asked to get the secretpotion.
    Wen to Ecruteak
    Beat Eusine
Beat Chuck easily with lanturn's Surf and Spark.
Flew back to olivine and beat Jasmine:

Feraligatr was up first, Koed Magnemite with Dynamicpunch.
Then Dynamicpunch missed and he got KOed by Thudnerbolt.
Lanturn did the job with Surf, also against Steelix.
    Released feraligatr.
Went to the radio tower and Gyarados got owned by a Weezing's Selfdestruct.
Got to teh top and beat the fake director.
    released Gyarados.

    team:
    Lanturn lvl 34
    Surf
    Spark
    Flash
    Thunder Wave

    Vaporeon lvl 34
    Surf
headbutt <- Replacing for Ice beam or so.

  • Man, it's been a while since my last update. You are now reading the words of the new Johto Champion XD. *sigh*, I must say that the victory against Lance felt hollow, there's simply no other feeling like defeating a region for the first time.

    My Team:

    Bitey
    View attachment 50637
    Strength
    Leer
    Bite
    Surf
Really quite simple, it hits stuff hard, and then hits them again.

    Quagsire
    View attachment 50638
    Surf
    Amnesia
    Earthquake
    Sludge Bomb
Mostly there to take down electrics, Quagsire can also wall special hits and attempt to poison with sludge bomb. Definitely not the best, but it does provide some valuable services.

    Slowking
    View attachment 50639
    Icy Wind
    Swagger
    Surf
    Confusion
Probably the most versatile of my team, possessing valuable supportive and offensive moves as well as having great type coverage. I'm using Icy Wind because Ice Punch makes Lance too easy.

    Poliwrath
    View attachment 50640
    Body Slam
    Hypnosis
    Submission
    Waterfall
Like Slowking, it mixes offense with support. The speed loss upon evolution is unfortunate, but the only really fast ones in the E4 are Gengar, Crobat, and Aerodactyl.

    SkulkrakenView attachment 50641
    Thrash
    Dragon Rage
    Leer
    Dragonbreath
2nd gen Gyarados is easily the worst, but come on, it's SHINY! Mostly it's there to hit stuff with Thrash or attempt to paralyze, it ought to improve a bit once I teach it Zap Cannon though.
