The Destroyed City of Erfurt
It was a hot, summer day. Ed and Al were walking along a dirt road, seeing if there were any cities around. Ed sighed, and said, "It's been three days since we've eaten, and our water supply's almost empty..." His stomach growled.
"Yeah..." Al said, sweating frantically. "I wish we could use Alchemy here in this world, but no Alchemy exists beyond the Gate..." He looked at his compass, but it had been shattered by the heat.
"Hey Al, what direction were we going in last time you checked?"
"I think we were going North..."
"Good. We should arrive in a city soon."
"What city is it?"
"I think it's called Erfurt."
"Okay, just wondering..."
They continued walking for a few hours, until Al suddenly fainted. "Al, wake up!" Ed said, splashing a bit of his water on Al's face. It didn't work. "Damn... I'd better hurry up, or else I might faint! If that happens, we're doomed!" He picked up al and started to run until he finally saw Erfurt in the horizon. "Finally..." Ed thought, "Now, if I could just-"
Suddenly, there was the sound of a gun being fired. "What's goin on now?"
"Halt!" a voice said. "Stand still! Move, and you die!"
"O-okay!" Ed said. He looked around and saw someone walkign towards him. A few seconds later, the man spoke again.
"Who are you?"
"I'm a traveller from Munich! My brother and I have been wandering around for days, and he just fainted a while ago! He needs help!"
The man didn't speak for a moment. Then he said, "Very well. Follow me. I'll take you to a motel."
"Kay. Thanks." Ed followed the man while thinking, "Why the hell did he have to threaten us with a gun?"
A few minutes later, they arrived in Erfurt. It was nearly wiped out, with building badly damaged and the road filled with small holes the size of bullets. "What happened here?" Ed asked the man, who was still walking.
"A few days ago, as you probably know, he Nazis were trying to uprise. They might not have damaged Munich or other cities very badly, but this city received the most damage. About 100 people were killed by taking ten gunshots to the forehead, while others were tortured to death. What was once a bustling city is now in a state of depression."
"That's terrible..." Ed said.
"Yeah... One of those civilians was my wife, while another was one of my children..."
"Oh... I'm really sorry."
"Don't be. I'm sure you didn't have anything to do with it."
"Hehe... Yeah, right... Hey, have you ever heard of a mineral called 'Uranium'?"
"Yeah. I heard it has very destructive powers under certain circumstances. Why?"
"Just wondering."
"Whatever. Anyways, the hotel should be a few minutes to the right."
"Thanks. See ya!"
"Bye."
The man walked away, still having a very sad face. "Poor guy... I know how he feels..." Ed said, walking. As he looked at the sidewalks, he noticed that there were a few people looking at him like he was evil. He even heard one person say, "I bet that's not his brother. It's probably one of his murder victims."
Eventually, Ed arrived at a hotel called "The Bronze Dome". And indeed, it was shaped like a dome, although it looked old, and there were gun wounds on every side of the building. Ed walked in and asked the man behind the reception desk, "Hey, pardon me. Do you have any rooms availible? Oh, and while you're at it, could you show me the way to the clinic?"
The man grumbled annoyingly. "It depends. The price for the average room is usually 30 Franks. Hand over the money or you don't get a room."
Ed checked his pockets, but all he found was a few coins from back in Amestris and an old letter from Winry Rockbell, one of Ed and Al's old friends. "Uh... Sorry, but I got nothing."
"Then get out-"
A man walked up to the receptionist, and said, "Hey, Frank, come on. Give em a break."
"Yeah yeah, whatever... Go on ahead and show them their room."
"Okay." He wlaked over to Ed and Al and asked, "Do you have nay luggage?"
"Nope. All we got are a few satchels."
"Okay. Follow me."
They walked up a long series of stairs until they finally came across a room at the very top of the staircase. "You're lucky." the man said, "This is the last room availible. Ever since that attack a few days ago, we've gotten alot of attension. Hey, where are you guys from?"
"I guess you could say a completely different world."
"Amen, brother. ANyways, here are your keys. I'll go get the nurse. While you're waiting, why don't you take a short nap? It might be a while before I get back."
"Thanks. Oh, do you have any water?"
"Yeah, of course we do! There's a small sink near your beds. But you'll have to use your own cups."
"Okay, thanks."
"No problem!" The man walked down the stairs.
"Whew, I'm tired..." Ed said. He put Alphonse down on one of the beds, and he got on the other. As he closed his eyes, he remembered Winry, and eveyrone else back in Amestris...
